Tbh I would say there is a mixture of inspiration from both Black American and Black British culture. Lots of the stuff chavs do here in the UK is based on Black British girl make e.g. bright undereyes. A lot of trends here in the UK are actually done by Black British people but I think a lot of erasure happens since the Black American culture is so well known

I think the controversy regatding chavs is not so much related to cultural appropiation (I don’t see any) and more with the fact that we are usually talking about low-class individuals from the UK, so I can see why some see it as an insult to working class people Edit: btw I want to clarify that when I was saying that I didn’t see cultural appropiation I meant that I don’t think that a black girl like Darcy doing this style would be cultural appropiation, not that what chavs do isn’t that. @@deborahware8102 as a specialist in the history of British subcultures, the divide between Black and White working class in the UK is less prominent than in the US. Back in the 60s, Mods and young Caribbean immigrants were often living in the same areas and that's why Mods came to love dub, and why 2-tone came to be in the late 70s and early 80s. There was also the whole Northern Soul movement of the 70s where underground soul hits from the US became hits amongst the British working class (Gloria Jones being the most famous example)

@@deborahware8102 They people who dress like this aren't stigmatising it at all, they generally just like African American culture, but just put their own spin on it. It's really what Laura L said, it's the upper-class people stigmatising these people, the "chavs" themselves haven't done anything wrong.

@@deborahware8102 I think so too I believe it originally stood for “council house and violent” which was definitely a stereotype put onto black people

If you omit the bronzer, make the brows a little thinner, and double the eyeliner, this is exactly how us emo/scene kids did our makeup in the 2000s…

Yea, so happy you're back! I remember when some of my friends had to use brown eyeliner as lip liner, and the other makeup choices they had were also not many (we're in USA). I know there's still not nearly as large a selection as for light skinned people, but it's come a long way since I was young. Super-fun video as always!❤ The "gum" and accent were the perfect finishing touch :D

Chav literally stands for council housed and violent... It's a bad stereotype of people mostly from working class backgrounds.. as someone who grew up on a council estate, I'm waaaaaay too familiar with the stereotype.

Chaves are such a common and popular thing in Europe, especially in Eastern Europe. They are conservative, close minded people who are extremely undereducated and behaving in a very unpleasant way, usually they are also aggressive and violent. They are usually poor but it’s not the main definition. You can search for “gopnik” or “qyartu” to see chavs from Eastern Europe.
