Well, she was the daughter of Henry VIII and officially third in the line of succession, so yes, a true heir irrespective of her mother being the second wife and the fact she was a woman. There was no more legitimate ruler during her reign; certainly not Mary.

Mary made so much mistakes and Elizabeth was just used them against her. Whoever is saying " Elizabeth won the battle, Mary won the war" that is not true. Mary did have an heir, Elizabeth was his godmother and she made him her succesor, he named her as his mother. And at the end what James actually did, he only unite 2 kingdoms what was for sure he will do it. Both of them have been great queens but Elizabeth was so much clever in very important situations.

@Leonoor Kolk She loved Francis the rl person, they had grown up together and those were her happiest years. She literally wanted to be buried in France in the end and called him her one true husband. Darnley was actually her family(I believe a relation of her and Elizabeth I) and was from England. It was not at heart for love, he was a noble not a commoner after all and it was a strategic marriage. Their children (James I) would have a strong claim to the English and Scottish throne, uniting them finally. But Darnley would not be able to usurp Mary's power as she was queen regnant and he would only be king consort. Mary was inlove/ infatuated initially, but it fell apart quickly(major asshole that Darnley 😂) and the rl was pretty much outright mutual hatred by the time he was murdered. Likely, why there was only James I and no other heirs. Rather true or not(likely but maybe not), its very telling ppl thought she had him murdered by the third hubby who also may or may not have raped her/blackmailed her to the marriage. The third marriage is the only one that might've been outright for love or it was a abusive/hostage situation, but we'll never know for sure. Marrying the third guy, was the final nail in the coffin and what lost her her crown. She was such a tragic figure and I think as a woman and a Catholic raised at French court, the Scottish court was always against her. But her heir did unite the two thrones and that bloodline is still in royals today so thats something.

Her legacy to some ultimately being the brood mare instead of keeping the crown and her head and getting a real chance to reign rubs me wrong. Her mom had reigned as regent and then her brother reigned as James's regent after her abdication, so she barely ever ruled her own birthright. If she had been a man instead of a Catholic French raised queen, literally no one would've made her abdicate in the first place. They had James I, the precious male heir who they could raise Protestant and it made Mary herself expendable bc boys are better.

Mary's father, James V, and Henry's mother, Margaret Douglas, were half-siblings having the same mother, Margaret Tudor, older sister to King Henry VIII. James V was from her first marriage to King James IV and Margaret Douglas was from her second marriage to Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus. Henry Stuart was on a short list to succeed Elizabeth's brother King Edward VI, since at the time England was still unsure about having a Queen Regnant. Since Henry VIII had no male heirs after Edward, the male line would come from his older sister. Henry Stuart was Margaret Tudor's only grandson since only one out of four of her sons lived past two, and he only had one daughter. So he would have been in line but the Privy council and parliament decided along with Henry VIII that his daughters could rule, so they did.

Elizabeth is Anne's daughter but Mary Stuart is Elizabeth's paternal cousin's daughter. Mary's grandmother was Henry VIII's sister Margaret who became Queen consort of Scotland. Her son married Marie de Guise and together they had Mary Stuart who became Queen of Scots at just 6 days old. You may confuse Mary Stuart with Mary Tudor, the daughter of Henry VIII and his first wife Katherine of Aragon, who indeed was the older half-sister of Elizabeth.

To be fair I do prefer Mary queen of Scots because she is kinder and nicer then Elizabeth however Elizabeth wins at the end she won both battle and war because even in 1603 when Mary queen of Scots son James took the throne she was a catholic and he was Protestant just like Elizabeth and plus James wanted Mary dead Mary queen of Scots is known as a downfall in history were Elizabeth is England greatest monarch in history so Elizabeth wins overall and even if Mary queen of Scots was queen in 1603 still would not give her a win that’s only if she became more tuff then Elizabeth and more stronger which I highly doubt since she probably would have ruled for like maybe a few years or dead before 1603 and it’s important to know that if lady Jane grey was never killed by Bloody Mary a different Mary then she would have been queen or her kids since she would have been 64,65 or 66 so yeah and the stuarts would not rule England if lady Jane grey or her kids if she had any were alive in 1603
