This portray of Elizabeth is definitely not my favorite, but honestly compared to the other idiotic characters, except for Catherine de Medici, she's the best character there is in the show in my opinion. I mean Elizabeth I can understand, since the story is about Mary as a protagonist, they have to make Elizabeth a villain. Do I wish they did a better job at it, by making her seem more like the actual Elizabeth, cunning and brilliant, and not going into hysterics every 10 seconds? Hell yes. But still it seems obvious (too obvious) at how the character seems ahead of her time, and you also can't help sympathizing with her so I think as a villain she's great, even if the portrayal is inaccurate. Honestly, there's so much Elizabeth portrayal and in the end everyone knows she's the most successful queen, definitely more then Mary. It's actually Catherine's portrayal that pisses me off more. They got her more wrong then Elizabeth and unlike Elizabeth, Catherine as a historical figure has fallen prey to the stereotype of greedy overambitious scheming women and why women should not have power as Reign portrays her when really she was exactly like Elizabeth in trying to create peace. In France she had an agenda of tolerance but couldn't inact these laws successfully like Elizabeth did because unlike Elizabeth she did not have the luxury of absolute power as queen mother and had to deal with both trying to control her wayward arrogant children as well as the scheming of over ambitious greedy nobles who are exactly like what Catherine was accused to be. Honestly I think Catherine's portrayal is more terrible then Elizabeth, because there are so much portrayals of Elizabeth and no one can deny she was a successful queen meanwhile poor Catherine is blamed for the civil war and the Bartholomew Massacre when it was really I think some Catholic noble's fault, I don't remember. The situation was just out of her control. She was the only one who tried to make peace and because some of ambitious nobles constantly sidelined and prevented her from it, they blamed all the chaos on her being a "scheming women", it's just so sad. But I think "Reign" made Catherine like that in order to show how much more "better" Mary is. I don't understand this interest of showing Mary, Queen of Scots as this pure virtuous figure that it seems the media always want her to be. Maybe it's to show the tragedy of a damsel stuck in power, but I honestly think historical Mary, Queen of Scots knew exactly what she was doing when she declared herself as "Queen of England" and continued to do so even when Elizabeth had the English soldiers negotiate a peace treaty with the Scots and the French to have Mary withdraw her claim. There's also her terrible decisions she made during her time in Scotland, though to be fair, even now the whole thing that happened to her is perplexing, not to mention why in the world she would marry a man that was being accused of her own husband's death. I do think Mary was a victim, but I also think she's at fault for her own decisions.... unless she was forced into the marriage with her husband's murderer , in which case yeah she's a tragic figure.
@mariev61085 жыл бұрын
Yeah right! That's why she signed a warrant for her execution knowing while she was under house arrest she had no one to turn to for help in plotting a coup but was a prisoner. In fact she sent her innocent cousin to a horrible death since the executioner couldn't behead her in one full swipe. Truly wonderful queen/person. No good Queen would allow an innocent person to be executed due to rumours they know to be false by jealousy and politics. It's sad really.

narutoske Elizabeth was just in a better position...Mary's own subjects hated and mistrusted her because she was Catholic and they considered her a Frenchwomen. When most of your own country despises you, that's extremely difficult to overcome. then her marriage to that psycho Darnley sealed her fate; however it did produce King James which ensured the line, something Elizabeth failed to do.
@superior120v56 жыл бұрын
How was Elizabeth in a better position, she was considered a bastard by the catholic half of her country, the Pope telling them to not recognize her rule at that time, she overcame numerous assassination attempts including the Babington Plot which Mary tried to have Elizabeth killed so she could take England and escape imprisonment,(This ultimately the reason Elizabeth signed Mary's death warrant) Elizabeth also defeated the Spanish Armada which was considered unbeatable at the time. Elizabeth overcame a lot of hurdles and survived, and came out on top. Mary made too many mistakes, which cost her, her crown. Yes she did produce an heir which Elizabeth did not, but even her son didn't save her from execution and really wanted little to do with her.
@ThePharaoho6 жыл бұрын
Superior 120V Because she had the support of her people, Mary did not, and that's what's most important, Mary's Lords even supported Elizabeth against her. Mary was not as foolish as people think. She was also very intelligent and fluent in languages. Elizabeth had her trials first, which gave her experience. She knew what she must do. Mary went through hers later. She was up against an experienced survivor and her treacherous nobles and lords of the congregation. That's a lethal combination of enemies. Elizabeth had her loyal lords...she was an Englishman born and raised in England. Mary was sent away to France, seen as a foreigner by her nobles and a Catholic to boot. Her marriage to Darnley was smart because he was a junior royal with an English claim. Somebody has to produce a legitimate heir since Elizabeth's trauma kept her from it. It was a smart political move on Mary's part, however, he was a psycho. Since people married for politics and not love, Mary couldn't have really courted him long enough to know that. He helped to undermind her rule, so Elizabeth was smart not to marry. Also Mary's marriage to Bothwell was really her huge mistake. Elizabeth made mistakes too, but not of that magnitude. She obviously didn't learn from the Elizabeth/Robert/Amy affair...anyhoo...Mary just didn't have enough experience, but she was not as stupid nor as foolish as people believe her to have been. All in all Mary just didn't have that Machiavellian ruthlessness that Elizabeth had developed.
@superior120v56 жыл бұрын
The only thing I really think Marry was stupid for and led to her demise was marrying Bothwell. Darnley was just bad luck, but like you said necessary if she was going to challenge Elizabeth, but marrying Bothwell.....I think that's where people get this idea that Marry was ruled by emotion and not by her brain, unlike Elizabeth who sacrificed love for power.

Elizabeth was psychologically and emotionally scarred from what her father did to her family, especially her mother, stepmother and what Thomas Seymour did to her. She saw what Henry’s abuse did to Mary and that deeply distressed her. Her mother and stepmother were executed.

It's possible Elizabeth didn't marry because she may have suffered emotional/phsycological damage from her father's actions, first learning of her mother's death and then seeing what happened to Katherine Howard afterwards. She also had the example of her half-sister Mary Tudor, whose marriage to Philip of Spain brought England into European conflicts that caused mass disruption and many English lives. How could she be certain that any potential husband wouldn't cause similar chaos? After suffering childhood losses and then seeing her people thrown into turmoil, one can understand why she ruled the way she did.

Things that may have made me to feel like Her: •My father destroyed my mother's life - cheated her , mentally disabled her, killing her slowly day by day... • My uncle's also done the same thing to their wife but they are better able to run away from there. • My sister was sexually abused by her boyfriend and my father destroyed her life too. • The person I love so much leave me by saying that I'm overthinker, crazy and can't bear me out more(Because of him i lost my job and failed in exams). • The people I assumed to be my friends(male) thought me as a slut . Now I only think i want is to have power. (I must have to rule my heart and my mind)

I always love the William Cecil and Elizabeth scenes, they have such a great working relationship. The queen and her advisor. They are so underrated. Though I don't appreciate Reign having Cecil fall in love with Elizabeth. I mean I could see it happen, but I always saw them having more of a sibling relationship kind of like how Thomas More is sort of portrayed like an older brother figure for Henry VIII in The Tudors... I'm not sure if their relationship was like that in real life though, but I loved The Tudors portrayal of it and how More was the only one we see calling Henry "Harry", makes me wonder if Cecil or Robert called Elizabeth "Bessie" or "Bess" for short as an endearing nickname since they were two people who were very close to her, along with Kat Ashley and perhaps Francis Walsingham.

Why does everyone say De Medíci? It's De Médici! The stress is on the e, not the i.
@MissDatherinePierce7 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on your native language and what is more natural in that one. I'm used to stress the e in German, so when I speak German I always put my stress on the e, but I noticed that when I switch to English I suddenly start to put the stress on the i. People probably don't want to upset others by it but they simply don't know better and go by what is more natural to them.
@katierasburn10935 жыл бұрын
MissDatherinePierce yep, I think it’s just simply due to the rhythm of the English language. We don’t have accents on our letters, they just sort of follow a pattern

Because Catholics worshiped the Virgin Mary, Elizabeth the virgin was an attempt to replace that. Elizabeth was close to her last step mother Catherine Parr. When she stayed at her home, Catherine caught the 15 year old Elizabeth kissing Seymour. Elizabeth was then asked to leave. This incident does not indicate someone who intends to be a virgin for the rest of her life. Elizabeth's apartments were adjoining Robert Dudley's. After Elizabeth turned his marriage proposal down, Dudley then married her cousin Lettice Knollys. Elizabeth flew into a range, boxed Lettice's ears and banished her from court. Elizabeth's problem was that she didn't want to share power by marrying - officially she was a virgin. Plus the possibility of a marriage could always be used as a political bargaining tool. In those days it was accepted that the man was the head of the household - so it was argued that if the woman was not the head of the household, how could she be head of the country? Elizabeth's solution was to keep Dudley as her secret lover on the side, but this wasn't good enough for him. Elizabeth was not known for her kindness towards other women and often struck them if she was displeased. She regarded her governess Kat Ashley as a mother yet struck her during fits of temper. Elizabeth was a violent woman and once broke the finger of another woman in a jealous rage and she stabbed the hand of a female servant with a fork because this woman served her badly. Mary Queen Of Scots was of course a Catholic and Catholics regarded her as the rightful queen. Mary lacked political guile and as a result was outwitted by her half brother the Earl of Moray, she lost her throne and fled to England. She was put under house arrest by Elizabeth which lasted for 20 years. Elizabeth's advisors told her that Mary was always going to pose a threat so a plan was hatched to make her life so unbearable that she would sanction a plot to dispose Elizabeth and take the throne of England. This was a set up to get proof that Mary had conspired against Elizabeth and Mary was then executed. Ironically Elizabeth had been in the same position as Mary when her sister Mary I was on the throne, and Elizabeth had been herself imprisoned. Elizabeth signed Mary's death warrant then a secretary took it away and it was implemented. Elizabeth then claimed she had not intended to sign it and the secretary was made a scapegoat. This was merely a tactic in order to escape blame. Elizabeth had Catholics burned at the stake and also enjoyed watching bear baiting. No doubt Elizabeth's mother Anne Boleyn was innocent of adultery - her real crime was failing to produce a son. How ironic that she ended up in exactly the same position as Katherine had been, with a daughter, not a son. The machinery she helped to build to enable Henry to rid himself of Katherine then turned on her. Anne was ruthless when she enabled the King to rid himself of Katherine, Thomas Moore, Bishop Fisher and the monks who refused to accept Henry as head of the church of England. Elizabeth was equally ruthless when she engineered Mary Queen of Scot's destruction. So she could hardly complain about what happened to her mother.
