Actually Della Reese and Mahalia Jackson debuted around the same time. Della Reese definitely had a church upbringing but her earlier work were show tunes, movies, and broadway which she performed effortlessly.

They definitely didn’t debut around the same time - they were a generation apart… Mahalia was instrumental for introducing Della to a wider audience gospel-wise. She happened to invite a then 13 year old Della to join her as she toured 3 cities as the lady that was supposed to accompany her in tour was heavily pregnant at the time. So in a way , Mahalia was like an aunt figure to Della who helped her start her musical career at least in gospel .

If I’m not mistaken, Della Reese was only about 14 or 15 at the time. This is Wayne Mahalia Jackson was already a big star. So your comment was a little ignorant. However, I’m assuming you haven’t just done the research. If I’m not mistaken, Mahalia Jackson was older than Della Reese’s mother.
