this song is extremely interesting to me and I read it as a metaphor for life itself. When we are born the first person we know is our mother, being separated from her after this point is our first experience with loss.
as we grow and develop into adults we form our personal sense of identity, and we live our lives as if they are building to something, and depending on your perspective of life and the ideologies you cling to,
There may not be anything waiting at the end of it all, even if we're the best person we can possibly be, there won't necessarily be a reward at the end of our mortal lives simply for living as a good person.
at the same time, I think that there's peace in that. And living the best way that you possibly can, certainly can provide you with a sense of satisfaction in the end.
I don't see this song as nihilistic in nature, but it isn't optimistic either. your life is what you make of it, and you'll only find out what waits at the end by getting there.
as edgy as that all sounded, I do have a very optimistic outlook on living, and I think kind acts are rewarded in turn. honestly and truly.
