@KingKittan3 жыл бұрын
@@SolemnnSolace Talking from pure ignorance here, but would a more universal prosthetic like this be possible to make with a sort of independent module format for the fingers and control module? Like let say you make the base socket tailor made to fit the hand since you need to make it fit properly for the end user, but then work with modular pre built fingers to replace the missing ones and an universal control module to control them. would something like that be more practical since you would only need to worry about the custom socket and then just build the rest with the pre built parts? It probably wouldn't be as precise as a fully custom made one, but wouldn't it be an acceptable compromise in exchange for a more accessible version of this kind of super responsive prosthetic?
@SolemnnSolace3 жыл бұрын
@@KingKittan let me start of by saying that I am only 20 years old and still studying, so this is more an opinion than a science-backed answer, but i think that this technically would be possible since the fingers themself and the control module are not super hard to prefab make. The one thing that holds me back from saying "yes" is that there are so many engineers working in orthopedic companies, and there hasn't been a viable option that delivers this. So there is something that holds this idea back, and i dont know what that is for sure. There are a lot of modular lower limb prosthetics and a few electrical upper limb prosthetics though.

Hello Ian Davis. First off i wanna say how much i admire you work, as a mechanical engineering student you really inspire me. Secondly, i wanted to express an idea i had for your hand: since i noticed you were trying to figure out methods to control each finger, i thought about one possible solution. (I'll apologize now for my terrible english but being an italian this is not my native language) Since you still have your thumb on your left hand, i thought you could put a "slider" on your mechanical index with 3 or 4 switches, that you control with your left thumb. Every switch would "unlock" a finger that, if locked, will stay open or closed nvm the hand input you give to it. The left-most switch of the slider unlocks only the index, then you unlock both the index and the middle finger, and so on, until all 4 mech fingers are unlocked. This way you could have more control of your hand without having to use your right one! Let me know what you think of this, and godspeed
