Hi Cap, a couple of tips. When you make your sighting and range mark, start a stop watch and make another at 3 minutes and 15 seconds after your first. Then you will have all you need to setup an attack. Range, course and speed. Use a compass to read off course. Then measure a distance between the two marks. Distance of the track (km) x 10. Will equal the speed of the target in knots. Try to get in front of the target to where, the angle on the target's bow is 30 deg. Bearing to the target, the target's course (hypotenuse line) and the right angle to the target's course (base line) will form a right angle triangle. The distance to the target (hypotenuse line) will be exactly double to the right angle of the target's course (the base line). The beauty of this is, you only need to go half the target's speed to collide with the target, at the intersection of the base and the hypotenuse side of the triangle . With only under half the target's seed, the sub commander can choose any point he wishes to open fire from. The ideal setup being 600 - 800 metres when launching torpedo's with a run time of less then 30 seconds. Once you have turned in and committed to the attack. Use periscope observations sparingly, only to confirm the attack is coming together. Once your ready to fire, use the scope. Once you have fired lower your scope and only raise it again, just before detention to confirm a hit. Good hunting!

you can use a stopwatch and the periscope to figure out the speed of visual contacts if you know the length of the contact. easiest way is to be 90 degrees (roughly, you could also do this when in an attack position and need the speed to set your torps whilst the contact is still at 40 degrees off the bow for example) off the bow of the contact, make sure you're not moving parallel to the contact. put the vertical line of the periscope on the bow of the contact, start a stopwatch and keep the vertical line of the periscope stationairy on the bearing where the contacts bow was when you started the stopwatch. stop the stopwatch once the contacts stern passes the vertical line of the periscope and voila, the contact has moved a known distance (the length of the ship) within a known timespan (time on the stopwatch) speed = distance/time in meters per seconds, multiply that by 1.92 to get knots.

When firing the torps don't you have to lead the ship? Cap was aiming the scope directly at the ship when he fired, that would then explain why the fish hit the ship behind?
@AllTradesGeorge2 жыл бұрын
I don't know how accurately it's modeled, but from what Cortana was saying, it seems like there's an automated system where you input range and direction (hull angle) and it computes a firing solution for you. It could be that something got missed as far activating all of that (which would be the only thing I can think of). I would imagine there's also an option where you can just input your range and angle of fire directly, but that would require either a lot of fast math to calculate the lead on your target, or else an incredibly intuitive (or lucky) guess.
@CakePrincessCelestia2 жыл бұрын
The TDC does that for you. You basically input the bearing automatically via the attack scope or UZO (the gyro-stabilized binoculars on the conning tower), the speed, the range and AOB (angle on bow / aspect) and then the thing does the rest. Kinda is a mechanical computer.
@meist3rbrau2 жыл бұрын
Afaik you have to enter the parameters manually before launching the eel, including the estimated lead angle. The information from the scope, i. e. distance, relative speed, heading, bearing was given to the torpedo operator by voice who then entered the parameters. At least this was done on the Type VII-C submarines described in the book and the movie.
@UKprl2 жыл бұрын
For an initial intercept course you can use the basic method of making small adjustments until you are maintaining a constant bearing to the target, at least until the target starts altering course. You were more or less doing the constant bearing thing when the target got to 215-220° which is when you were closing in rapidly. Alternatively starting from a parallel position, if you think your best speed is 2x that of the target you can sail at 60° relative to their direction of travel. and if you think your speed is 1.5x theirs, more like 45° if you want to stay slightly ahead. E.g. if they are sailing due North, initially head at 315° while you plot it out. The trig is easier at those angles. (If you are the faster boat attacking you are travelling along the hypotenuse) That will be sufficient until you are close enough to think about diving.

When turning as a wolfpack the technique was to pass the direction to the opposite side. Turn left come to heading 320. Pass to right sub, pass to left sub. Subs eye left sub, when left sub turns she slows by two knots. Mid sub slows 1 knot, outer sub maintains speed. If you can use rudder direction changes the order would be, turn left 5 degrees on the rudder, (up/down on the bow planes to a given depth). Come to bearing 320. If issuing a fire order you would spread torpedoes by .5 of a degree per 3 miles. So fire at bearing 090 on the range finder, left sub fires at 89.5 mid 090, right 90.5 degrees... good video 👍 If in a pack of 3, send a single sub forward and attack in a set time point. Try and get to 4-6 miles in front and turn towards so that the angle is on a constant bearing. If the speed of the torpedo is say 33 knots and you have a constant bearing of 30 degrees and you are doing 11 knots divide the bearing by three, and turn towards so that the angle is at one third as the torpedo is 3 times quicker. If at 6 knots and torpedo does 30 knots that is a bearing of 5th's... hope that makes sense

Excellent job this time around. Something to note is that convoys will turn randomly as part of their doctrine. When they turned away doesn't mean you were spotted it could have simply been an ordered course change per their zig zag pattern. No need to panic that you were spotted. As has been mentioned you can fire torpedoes while on the surface no need to have to dive. Personally I would have fired surfaced. You'll note on your map the ocean is divided into grids with numbers and letters. When contact was first made you could have sent the grid and target heading to your other subs. Might have helped sub 3 to find you. Really enjoyed this video. Sub work is lots of observation lots of patience and then it hits the fan when the first torpedo detonated. Well done.

To increase your hitting chance I would recommend to send a fan of eels towards a convoy. About ranging, the reason Grumps measurements are off is because he is using the wrong speed. You should keep in mind that for a large ship, at 20km (if you see anything) you'll only be able to see a mast or the top of the ship. At 10-12km a large ship will appear as if part of the boat is below the waterline. At 5-7km or so you should see the actual water line. Measuring the length is not a great idea because as the aspect ratio to the target decreases you'll get false measurements. Remember the plotting triangle. You need and accurate bearing (easy) combined with an accurate speed OR distance. If one of those things are off, you need to reverify your assumptions. Based on what I'm seeing from the video, they did not change course. For the shooting, you need to shoot where they will be, not where they are now. You hit the second ship because they were trailing each other on the same course.

Do you know the constant bearing thing? If you want an easy intercept course just turn to somewhere ahead of them where there bearing will not change left or right but stays constant. Then you have collision course. For a proper setup the parallel running ahead and then turning 90° towars is better tho as with the collision course you have not really time to close while dived cause when you slow down on colision course you will ofc sail past behind them. But might be usefull if all you want is close distance fast.

Press M for Map, you can look at it any time, eg on bridge. Also, when directly abeam the target, you can go to all stop, then use your stopwatch to time how long it takes the ship to sail through your scope sights. Can calculate target speed based on ship length and time taken. Working out torpedo shots with the TDC is very finicky, unless you get all the target speed/range/Angle on Bow perfect it doesn't work out. I've only ever hit a fraction of the shots I've taken.

For example, one fleet enganges as usual while another only start attacking at a closer distance for all attack weapons (artilery, missiles and airplanes). Then compare the results to when both fleets engage at usual distances.

@dubd75772 жыл бұрын
Um, no. This is an extremely short summary and apologize for spelling. The wolf pack is a very specific type of sub warfare "battleplan" employed by the Kriegsmarine. Subs did not communicate to each other. They would communicate to "controllers" which HQ would keep track of sub positions, total duty time, how much time they have left without "resupply". Not all subs where the same, or would have the same "patrol time" and Patrol distance. Only 30% (on average) were combat "ready" at any one time due to the "rotation". Rotation meaning the amount of subs returning from tour, refitting and rearming, and sending out. Alas if they could reach their goal of "300", then 100 could be actively engaging at anyone time. The germans kept track of convoys expecetionlay well, especially in early phases of the war. They "prioritized" convoys, and new when they left american ports. The Kriegsmarine had certain "safe" zones where they would choose to attack. Places where there was no air cover from land or coastal patrols. The wolf pack battle plan was to position subs in these safe zones to provide maximum chance of sinkage of tonnage. Not just wait around. They could only stay out there for so long. They were sent out in "packs" [though they traveled alone] and given intercept positions to lay in wait and attack (at night usually). Wolfpack targets were very large convoys w/ higher priority tonnage. Even though subs didn't talk directly together, the battle plan was well planned and each one new its duty "in the pack". They would strike the convoy "together". Sometimes sending "wolfs" INSIDE the convoy to wreck massive damage. These attacks were coordinated in a sense to strike the convoys multiple times during days of attack. Eventually the convoys learned better convoy protection formations, coordinated turning and had "escort" convoys, better air cover which made the wolf pack have higher losses themselves. The wolfpack strategy then becomes more of a liability. So when one says "wolfpack", its designating a type of warfare/strategy during a specific time of the war. The wolfpack strategy was in itself a strategy put in place after previous ones where not providing the results needed and this wolfpack didn't last during the rest of the war. Losses became to high and the safe zones disappeared. Add to the fact that the enigma code was broken even though the Kriegsmarine had updated theirs coding alot during the war. (by adding more tumblers) For more basic ww2 wolfpack info search - Even though the battlefield docu series is full of errors and "cold war" inaccuracies its still worth a watch. CAP: BEST VIDEO YOU EVER MADE! PLEASE KEEP THESE COMING! HAD ME ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT THE WHOLE TIME! awesome video! Also, when you are taking the measurment of the length of the ship for range, this is only useful if you are perfect 90°/ parallel to the ship. Use hight measurment of highest part of ship for perfect distance calcs. every time. Cant wait for next mission!

Trying to figure out what the hell was going on with those reticle units was a major timesink and I regret getting into it more than anything else this week. Vertical scale on the attack periscope is in milliradians. I assume Kortana was smart enough to translate the readings correctly, otherwise your range estimation for the torpedoes was 10 times too short. I guess the horizontal scale is in degrees after all. There's an almost exact difference of 2 degrees in compass heading between 22:22 and 22:33. You would expect the scale to show 8 thanks to 4x zoom factor but the ship had the 10+ seconds to fall behind. I thought the 1.8 tick difference was a little much but it looks reasonable, now that I reviewed the footage for the nth time. Around that time, the ship's angle of view was therefore 3/4 degrees or 1.31 centiradians and if we assume that the 125 m long ship was perfectly parallel to you, it was 9.6 km away. 125/((3⁰/4)*pi/180*100) = 95.49...

Roger will check the manual again but I swear it said centiradian on the vertical?
@Mojje422 жыл бұрын
@@grimreapers vertical is centigradians "Divide the height of the ship by the centiradians, and multiply by 4 if the periscope is zoomed in. This gives you the range to the ship in hectometers"
@voradfils2 жыл бұрын
@@Mojje42 The manual is out of date. I assume that it's referring only to the observation periscope at this point. (50 / 1000)rad *(180⁰/pi)/rad = 2.8647...⁰, so 50 mrad looks about the same as 3⁰. 50 crad would be almost 29⁰.

So CAP I don't know how accurate this is but when she says degrees to bow ask her to clarify or get clarification of the targets bow based on the map remember that you know the ships heading speed and length so if you do what damp did if you're unsure damp can give you a estimation too! Next remember your target is moving and will require you to predict its speed if it is faster or slower than you.

Cap, as suggested by a few others, watch some of Wolfpack345's videos on this game. You can pick up exactly what to do from watching one or two of those videos. For instance how to estimate the speed of enemy vessels.

Probably covered already, but guessing the torpedoes missed because the speed of the target was not entered into TDC? At least I never heard a speed being called out, only ranges.

As best I could tell from the video, Sub-1 under-lead the front target; that one sailed out of the way and the second sailed into the shots.

Setting up an attack in a sub was a time-consuming and difficult technical exercise. Skipper and XO and Nav typically worked up the base course and speed.

Salinity and temperature also played a part and was never accounted for in these early fights.

Also, you want to keep in mind that the crew you are using are doing some heavy thinking. Be ready to grab a cuppa, and also spell your conning staff as well. O’Kane also planned a big meal for the whole crew after an action.

Zoom on the periscope doesn't matter at all --- 3 degrees of angle is 3 degrees of angle no matter what magnification you are using. You should notice the scale changing when you change magnification such that what reads 3 degrees at 2X should be about three times as wide when you switch to 6X.

Comment from cortana about "wrong torpedo" data so i think you might have had a wrong torpedo speed and it was slower and you just got lucky hitting the rear one.

To further see how a tour on a sub goes more smoothly, watch some of Wolfpack345. You guys seem extremely anxious and chaotic, something that does work when youre fighting on the ground, but doesnt do much for submarine video reporting, sorry to say.
