I gotta say that this 'Sub Sim' is an _excellent_ counterpoint to the DCS and occasional IL2 Content. There is something about the long, complex chess match leading to intercept that is hugely satisfying. On the surface of it (😅🤣😂🤣see what I did there?🤣😱😱), one would think that all that slow moving preparation would be boring, but it is not boring at all. I gave DCS my personal 5 star rating awhile back, and as good as IL2 is, I only give it a 4.5. The Sub Sim? 5 stars baby!💯/💯

Try firing torpedoes at ships slightly farther away first, then firing at nearer ships. If you do it well, the torpedoes will hit around the same time, giving the ships no opportunity to evade. As soon as they start evading, your chance of a hit goes down dramatically, until they resume a steady course and speed.

I am enthralled watching "Cap von der Kriegsmarine! After this I watched a few videos on wolfpack tactics. Found Otto Kretschmer's 11 Points of Submarine Warfare. 1. Efficient lookouts are of prime importance. 2. It is essential not simply to spot the target, but to spot it in good time. 3. Lone ships should be attacked on the surface with gunfire in order to save expensive torpedoes. 4. Survivors should be assisted where possible. 5. Convoys should only be attacked in daylight if it is not feasible to wait for nightfall. 6. Attack at night from the dark side of the convoy, so that the target is silhouetted and the submarine is in shadow. 7. When there is little or no moonlight, attack from the windward side [to avoid a visible white bow-wave when motoring into the wind]. 8. Fire one torpedo per target, not fanned salvoes. 9. Fire at close range. 10. Once the attack is launched, do not submerge except in circumstances of dire necessity. Remember that on the surface it is easier for you to spot the enemy than for the enemy to spot you. 11. Dive only for two hours before dawn each day, to rest the crew, sweep with the sound detection equipment, etc.; otherwise, remain on the surface.

I also read where he would drift or sail into the middle of the convoy and attack from there. Could you get in front, submerge and then, by dead reckoning surface in the middle of the convoy? The escort ships will be on the outside. Then one torpedo per ship and turn to let one loose on another. Or, as described, use the deck gun at close range? Very interesting watching and reading how the wolfpacks operated. In the video you talked about one crew spawning behind. The packs would have one trailing the convoy to pick off stragglers. I wonder if that's why they spawned there.

@@grimreapers Also, ASDIC is useless if you are on the surface. I saw a few instances where point 10 is referred to or at least relates to it. A Type 7 U-Boat is a submersible, not technically referred to as a submarine. The ship is much faster riding on top. Stay on the surface as much as possible. Get in close using the tactics listed above especially if the ships do not have defensive armament.

@@grimreapers in the game, do the allies have surface radar or huff-duff? What year is it supposed to be? Is early on with no surface radar or huff-duff, Otto's rules work well. If not, then you can be seen with surface tactics and huff-duff will catch and triangulate your positions when you use your radios. Otto's rules will not work as well as true wolfpack tactics.

I would love to see some multi crew tank gameplay from IL-2 Tank Crew. It is a ton of fun seeing you guys work together rather than all in your own vehicles/planes. It would be awesome to see a GR unit of Tiger tanks taking on a horde of T-34s! Would you guys ever consider doing this? Cheers!

Two of my friends and I did some multi-crewing of tanks in Post Scriptum - it was obvious most other tanks were single-crewed as we could fire on the move, while most others stopped first.

To help you guys with the other subs, you can follow the convoy to confirm their heading and speed. Then break off and choose a map coordinate to meet the other subs at ahead of the convy (not by to much) just enough to get the wolf pack together and once you spot the convoy heading to you as they come over the horizon, you adjust the position a little and then dive and wait. That way you would hopefully meet with the other subs and no risk being spotted plus you have full batteries

So this was a lot of fun to watch! Inside a convoy attack was my favourite type of attack. There was one thing I would have done differently (well, up until surfacing. Fun, yes, bound to get yourself killed very quickly, also yes), when the ships were close, target two ships. You have four torps to play with at the front, send two to each ship. It is a lot to ask but I think it would be worth it in the end. Edited to add, don't try to target two at once, at least not yet. Fire your first torps and then immediately switch to another target.

You're improving so much with every mission! Fighting it out with the flower might be a bit ambitious :-). The IRL term for shooting a torpedo "from the hip" is a "snapshot" - usually used nowadays with a homing torpedo to make another ship/submarine turn away from chasing you.

Wait. Why the confusion about wolfpack relative positions? Doesn't the navigation station auto-update with each ship's own position? At 8:25 we see that Cap-n-crew are in grid AN-4981, sw quadrant, heading of 080 at X-knots. Wouldn't each other sub have the same ability to know their own respective positions? Just share location info on comms, no?

Possibly to find each other in the beginning, find a ship, use it as a marker, get bearings of said ship relative to all other boats, plot them on the map if you can I've never played this. If you can, you'll get the approximate locations of all other ships in the pack.

Watching all of the grim reapers vids are great. I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this, although it would make for terrible video, traditional u boat wolf pack tactics were to shadow a convoy, get ahead of them. Submerge and lie in wait, surface inside the convoy, fire as much ordinance as possible, in one run, dive and evade. Rinse and repeat. Typically this was done at night (why I said it would make terrible video) Thanks for the many hours of enjoyment!!!

Patterns, patterns, patterns. Developing the plot is most of the attack. Also, not a bad idea to work out your withdrawal course. At least have a rough idea. As far as a scope that can zoom in really far, you’d need a US fleet boat from later in the war. Those even had a radar on the mast as well. You could do a lot with radar and sound without ever actually seeing the ships, although American fleet boats made a real effort to get actual eyes on target so they could get types/tonnages.

Why are you guys using the AA gun to shoot on the surface at the ships? That's nuts. You should be using the 88 mm gun which was standard on the VII U-Boats. 1 × 8.8 cm SK C/35 naval gun[5] with 220 rounds en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_VII_submarine

I’ve just started playing DCs and when I have began the training sessions ( I don’t have a HOTAS or head tracking system) I had to spend ages trying to fit through the circles before I could start using my weapons and I couldn’t find a way around it , any tips?

Try a hit and run, one or two subs fire four or eight tubes after the impact move await from convey. That should draw the escorts await from the convey. The other one or two subs hit the convey. That should give you three to five kills.

Its great that you've got a real world submariner on the show but..... every time he tries to speak, someone speaks over him and then he stops talking, which is a real shame.
