How can a missile or any jet propelled object move in a vacuum? 🤔 Blasting objects already reaching atmosphere just to lessen impact damage is not optimal.

No not feeling safer at all anything over say 1killometer will be hard to stop anything more than that is beyond our known technology only thing we could do is move people before impact as old saying goes its not if its when.

@@Sannidor a rocket creates thrust based on newtons third law ; every(!) action has an equal and opposite reaction. if you're frame of reference is 0 units of speed and you shoot out anything with velocity, whether its snowballs, teddybears or rocket exhaust, you're going to propel yourself in the opposite direction. Space is not a black hole where stuff seemingly vanishes.

In the meantime, data has come in and indeed: mission successful. The moon actually slowed down more than anticipated, due to the cloud of dust and rocks thrown up by the impact.

A useful method is to use sails, they are light and before deployment are compact, so ideal for shooting into space. Anchor them to the asteroid using wires (a perforating anchor wouldn't work because many have crumbly exteriors and the vehicle would need heavy tools) with a a few rolls of wire you could firmly hook the sail onto the rock and use solar wind to push them out of course.
