Mission Impossible is one of the most popular movie franchises of all time. Especially the later sequels, having put some of the greatest stunts ever put to film. But we would not have these spellbinding movies, if it weren't for Mission Impossible 3. MI:3 completely changed the tone and landscape of what these movies could be, and introduced a new style of action that would carry through the rest of the franchise. Mission Impossible 3 absolutely saved the franchise.

I would say Revenge of the Sith. George really needed to come out with a bang, and not Jar Jar (I love Jar Jar though). ROTS saved Prequel trilogy and is, in my opinion, the best Star Wars movie ever. It's success unfortunately made a way for Sequel s..

Not really a movie, but I have the feeling that we wouldn't have a last season of The Clone Wars without Star Wars Rebels, also that Genndy Tartakovsky's Star Wars shorts is what kept interest in the prequels.

This is blatantly false. It's pretty obvious if you watch Fast 5 on that they know the series is ridiculous. The F&F producers are clearly self-aware. The MI series is taken seriously, insofar as you can with this type of film.
@PlanetXerox

I think they're one in the same. M:I and F&F both focus of teamwork (or Family for that matter) and it's importance and dynamic. It's clichéd, corny and honestly redone to its breaking point, but it's earnest and it works because we understand what it feels to be like in one. It's the beating heart of a great/decent franchise, the same reason why the MCU remains successful, those small character moments to feel for them. Whereas Transformers, Pirates, and those Kaiju movies are faltering in the blockbuster landscape, the MCU, M:I and F&F strive and survive because of one thing: the dynamic of teamwork and humility.

PSH was a terrific villain. They ditched the relatable, personable villain with sorta understandable motives and went with a "I'm going to kill your wife in front of you" opening scene. I disagree on the missions not mattering in MI1, yes the emotional richness of the characters begins in 3 but mission impossible one is such a tightly woven story that everything introduced in its opening minutes pay off in some manner from the second half of the film onwards, moreover what went wrong on the first mission informs the film's entire structure, so yeah De Palma style is blatantly present but it serves the tone of the film rather than it being used for excess

That's because it manages to be the one with the most sense of a team effort in it. The stakes are interesting with them basically ghost and having to work with minimal equipment to stop a threat like global-nuclear war. Keeps you on your toes with everyone, not just Tom mainly. Still love the later two, as they were real powerhouses in action, but they were mostly Ethan-centric than team centric.

@@motherplayer - Actually, I found it to be the opposite. The team in Ghost Protocol worked too well, that in essence, they were just extensions of Ethan. Each move they make is always under his orders. The backstories for Carter and Brandt only exist to spicen up their characters, but otherwise inconsequential. On the contrary, in Rogue Nation, the characters were fleshed out more organically; Faust had her own mission and wasn't following Hunt's command and Brandt's allegiance is blurred. This helps preserving the tension between the characters, keeping them on our toes without the need for unnecessary backstories.

I doubt that. They changed the tone pretty much with every movie. The first one had a complex and intelligent plot, it was a classic spy thriller and a brilliant adaptation but the action was minimal. The 2nd one was your generic save the world bs with Ethan Hunt being James Bond more than Ethan Hunt. The third one is where the stunts, tension and the smart villains come in. Average amount of action. The 4th one ramped up the stunts and action to eleven but sacrificed on the plot(and the intelligence and acting) of the film big time. The 5th and 6th ones are the ones where we finally strike a balance in all these aspects.

It surprises me that MI III is as underrated as it is. I’ve always thought it was a super solid action film. I think it often gets overlooked because the series continually got better from there and that was the starting point

It has a kickass opening scene, a very charismatic and menacing villain but the action scenes are not as goodly shot as the other ones. Too much overediting and shaky cam.

I was about 10 when the 1st MI came out, and I thought the CIA wire scene and the helicopter blast scene were the greatest things I had seen on screen, so the nostalgia alone makes this movie faultless. MI2 would seamlessly fit into the late 90s explosion/slow motion/action era of Bruckheimer, Nicolas Cage and evidently John Woo, I loved it.......ofcourse until I saw MI3, I was older and it was hinted around this time that Tom wanted to make this not only a trilogy, but a series of movies so this made it the movie I rooted for the most which as you would call it...Save the franchise :) The rest is history. I watch the whole series of movies every time a new one is about to be released, i've learned to appreciate all of them in their unique way, but I must say Fallout is just about as perfect an action movie as it gets.

I think MI3 might be my favorite in the series, not because it's the best, but because, like you said, it set up the tone for the rest of the franchise. I'll never forget the power of that opening scene. In fact I remade it in college for a student project. Definitely don't think any other villain in the franchise can match PSH. RIP.

"Brian de Palma...got to stretch his flair for 'split-screen editing'" played over footage of what is clearly a shot filmed on a split diopter lens, that in no way features any split-screen editing/post-production. I don't think M:I1 contains any split-screen editing whatsoever, but I admit I haven't seen it in a while though I know it pretty well. A diopter lens does not even produce an "optical effect" it's literally raw optics (beyond the aesthetic effect obviously), but an aesthetic impact does not an optical effect make.

MI:III is easily my favorite in the franchise. Because of all the reasons you mentioned. We learn that Ethan is human, with flaws, with emotions, & sometimes he does fail. But his fails have dire consequences, & we as the audience get to see those consequences & we connect with him.

To be fair to the first one, the intent was "out with the old (Phelps), and in with the new (Hunt)." Supposedly, they tried to get Peter Graves, the original Phelps, to reprise his role for the movie but he turned it down because they wrote Phelps as the bad guy. Ultimately, even though it wasn't nearly as action-packed as any of those after it, it still accomplished what it set out to do: transition Mission: Impossible from "classic TV series mostly remembered for its music" to "contemporary movie series with high production values and even higher stakes stories." Very rarely is there a movie where you can tell there's gonna be a sequel in the *middle* of the movie instead of at the end. The first Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible movie was one such film.

What is interesting about MI movies is that first movie feels like completely different from from the rest and second one feels completely different from the rest . You could say first mission impossible is better James Bond movie ( even the James Bond rule to sleep with not single woman happens ) and for some reason Ethan can't fight for shit even though he is very good at fighting in the other movies. Second one is an straight up action movie though beginning is kind of meh . And rest of them is pretty consistent but third one does feel darker than the rest . And if you start from third one you don't have in the back of your mind that Ethan banged his best friends wife in the first movie.

Hot Take: I think MI 2 is better than MI 3, im sorry but MI 2 is fricking insane, like the stop mumbling scene was intense and is one of the best scenes of the entire franchise, or even when sean harris impersonates ethan and talks to his GF, that was insane, MI 2 has some of the best scenes but it doesn’t mean its all good, but MI 2 made me feel alive. Its bullshit, but the fun kind of bullshit, MI 3 is good but i honestly can’t remember much, there’s not really a standout moment or anything, aside from the opening, i do love the newer ones, but idk man i feel like the first 2 focused more on the mystery and spy stuff rather than action, like in MI 6 when benji is impersonating soloman lane i saw that coming, but the crazy shit of MI 2 i didn’t see any of that coming, 5 is my favorite don’t get me wrong, but MI 2 is much better than most people might say. EDIT: Oh man, im honestly shocked at how many people actually seem to like MI 2, i never would’ve thought anyone really did like it, most people see it as oh yeah that dumb one with motorbikes and shit, but judging by how many likes this got, its not the case, MI 2 is absolutely amazing, and alot of people don’t give it enough credit.

Another fab video. MI3 is still one of my favourites. I love the first, but I strongly disliked the second. I recall spotting errors in the shots while sitting in the cinema, revealing how like I was invested in the movie. The third movie captured me right away, and I was completely emotionally invested in it from the opening scene. I remember sobbing when Ethan's "wife" was killed in the first few minutes. I've seen every one since in theatres, at least one in IMAX. The MI series is one of my favourite worlds to visit, and the third was the turning point for me on that. They get better and better in many respects, especially the stunts, but 3 holds a special place in my heart. Plus, it has the greatest movie illusion in the series so far, with Tom Cruise shoving a probe up his own nose, but making it look like the actor behind him. Magic!
