One of my favorite versions of "Mission in the Rain" - Jerry Garcia with Maria Muldar and Donna Jean Godchaux, John Kahn, Keith Godchaux & Buzz Buchanan

This song means so much to me, from my misguided youth on the streets in SF and Berkeley, "urban camping" if you will. Met many beautiful souls on Telegraph and the Haight. I often wonder where they are and how they are and if they are even still alive, as this was before the internet was so commonplace. I'm on day 4 of wd right now trying to kick for what seems like the millionth time. This time switched to subs for a few months and tapered down to half mill. before jumping off. I fully understand and appreciate the soulful love that jerry expresses in this song describing both the hopelessness and heartbreaking loneliness involved in addiction that is musically evoked in the minor key intro, yet when juxtaposed with the switch to major chords in the verse/chorus seems to change to a more hopeful feeling. And that's just the tip of the iceberg from a musical standpoint. Lyrically, this man sings the innermost feelings of my soul. The world lost a treasure when Jerry passed. A few years ago I was on the lot after WSP in charlotte and someone was blaring mission, and suddenly I was overcome with this sensation that jerry was right there among us. Like a west African proverb I read when I was a child... A man is only dead when he is forgotten... Love to all my family out there, and peace and hope to all who struggle with addiction as I have for the better part of twenty years. I'm betting on myself to come out ahead this time thanks to my loving wife and kids and other caring souls who give me so much more to live for than a temporary fix to numb the wounds of a hard life. Here's to the light at the end of the tunnel!

***** Hey man! Thanks a lot for the support! I have been doing really well since I posted that comment. WD was not really as bad as I had feared it would be because I tapered off slowly. I am really lucky in that I have a wonderful and supportive family and my wife is also in recovery, so we understand each other's ups and downs. Another thing that has helped is that I have been a stay-at-home dad for the last 7 months, and this gives me and my kids a ton of time to spend together bonding, and as you know, it is almost impossible to work while you are coming off of opiates. They are my motivation to change and live a better life. Thanks again and I will email you at some point in the near future. Peace.

Yeah, i kinda hear what you're saying, Maria sounds beautiful. I dunno. I just love how they all sound together in this version, I love how Donna sounds on certain songs, certain nights. The past is gone, it cannot be changed, only the recordings remain. I don't listen to tapes anymore, so I've deleted the worst stuff and only listen repeatedly (and upload to youtube) the gems, for which I feel grateful.

In SF, "in the Mission" refers to a district that is near Mission Dolores and Mission Street, not just the Mission building (the very old church) itself.
@justsayknow76324 жыл бұрын
That is correct! My family was from The Mission District in San Francisco. They owned a fine house that survived the '06 earthquake that is a historic monument today! It was sold in the 1940s after the Great Depression ate up most of their resources unfortunately!

To all tha donna haters, your assessment of her talent is as hollow as your heads, and if she was so bad why did the band play with her? Why did Jerry like singing with her?Could it be that jerry was a better judge of musical talent than some armchair chumps. Maybe jerry was searching for harmony, maybe she helped him find it. Your smug comments do not become you. They only betray your ignorance. Find someone else to troll. Or try finding some harmony of your own.

Donna sometimes sang like an angel, to be sure! Other times, sadly, not so much. A friend of mine had a tape of the band where Jerry was playing a blues solo, blues like I have never heard before: just sublime. Then Donna started in lowing like a cow stuck on a barbed-wire fence! That time she just ruined the moment. It was a travesty. I see Donna a a mixed bag...

Gorgeous version. Loved Keith's piano. It is well documented that looking back Jerry regrets how the JGB or GD never gave Donna her own monitor. Jerry always loved how they sounded sitting in the living room or in the studio. Remember, Jerry didn't listen to his music over and over and over like we do. He played it then moved on.

Nice version in reasonably good quality audio... But Jerry's voice was shot here, hoarse & strained; in spite of his best efforts of soulful expression, some of the melody notes are not hitting the mark. This is a good one musically, but vocally there are much better performances of this song, if only in terms of the vocal tone quality, here it's audibly worn out.
@JoelFinkel Жыл бұрын
I think it's one of Jerry's most lucid and articulate guitar performances, though. The whole ensemble playing is brilliant. They are all playing with their ears wide open. And the way Jerry enters his second solo by echoing Keith's tinkling as he finishes his solo gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
