Well said. The pickings are slim, unless you got money. Back in the 90’s, I had a couple of friends that built really small engines, put a bunch of money in them, and found out that in a regular weight car, they really weren’t fun. They eventually built bigger engines, and were happy.

One thing I can say about Nolan is he never bs anyone. He knows his stuff about building engines, making great combos when putting a drag car on a budget and is always willing to help you if you need it. We have bounced stuff off each other to get the other’s opinion on solving a problem with our cars. He has given me great advice and recommended certain parts that worked well for him and have worked out excellent for me. We were raised very similarly as children from getting to know each other these last few years. I think that’s why we have become such good friends. Our word is our bound, we tell each other the truth and always treat each other with respect. I feel very fortunate that we are good friends because people like Nolan are unfortunately very rare.

I just have practical expectations and predict what a motor and car will run within a couple tenths. I just built a 390fe for a guy. Just a stock refresh for a 1967 ford wagon. My honest 350h.p. motors will usually gap 500h.p. bs ones.

Not only been down that very same road, I LIVED on it. Hell, I " built" a couple 307s. I laugh now, but made me smile 40+ years ago! Add cam,lifters, springs, headers, intake and 4 bbl, Vega torque converter in PG, or TH350, airshocks to clear L60s and awsy I went! Skynyrd blasting out the Kraco 8 track thru SparkOMatic 6x9s, and a 12 pack. Perfect Friday night!!!

Nothing wrong with that. That 48 ford in the picture for the video I built a 307 for and put it in. Used a .442/465 lift cam, 283 power pack heads and a offy 360 intake ram horn manifolds. I would go 307 over 305 anyday and I love blasting some Skynyrd!

There’s definitely no replacement for displacement. There’s still guys that will die on a 383 hill over a 440.
@wildrosegarage42085 ай бұрын
I have had this talk/almost fist fight many times. 383 never did much in drag racing 440's did. An early dart with a 340 was quicker than the gts with a 383. So that kind of proves the point right there. I would rate them with a 390fe maybe a little ahead but a little behind a 396 chevy. I am talking as they came from the factory. Nothing wrong with a 383 Mopar though. Entry level big block type of thing.

@@wildrosegarage4208 my dad had a 70 Hemi 4 spd Road Runner brand new , his buddy Jack had a 440 6 pack GTX 4 speed. The GTX would pull away once they hit 3rd gear and it didn’t matter who was driving they switched cars and the GTX still pulled on the RR. My dad always said he should have bought a 440 car. His hemi had a bunch of minor but annoying issues like the water pump casting being porous and weeping, spark plug tubes filling with oil, broken motor mounts etc.

Truth 99% of the time for a drag motor I would probably go 340 over 360 but there real close but I would go 283sbc over 305sbc for sure but thats the only exceptions.

One of my track buddies builds small block Mopars. His channel name is Real Live Human Drummer. He put a Magnum 318 together for a customer with a 68 Satellite. He has 4 videos of it in a playlist on his channel entitled Mopar 318. His own F.A.S.T. small block is in a playlist entitled my 71 factory appearing 340 duster

I checed it out, nice running little motor. But as for his dyno simulators saying it makes 398h.p. I find it funny, A 318 with 8.5:1 compression through exhaust manifolds and tiny cam is not makeing 400hp maybe on 100+shot. I built a 360 magnum last year with a set of aluminum heads,headers,airgap ,rockers, .565 lift cam, 9:7:1 compression and it would be just over 400hp and its a hole different animal from that one, but thanks for showing me the video.

@@wildrosegarage4208 Jeff's specialty is porting small block Mopar heads, intakes and exhaust manifolds for the Factory Appearing Stock Tire drag racing. He likes to run a solid flat tappet camshaft and tells me the stock hydraulic roller springs work well with the solid flat tappet.

I actually do believe there is a small amount of power gain by doing this, But I don't think the small gains are not worth having a motor that puts massive wear on piston skirts and cylinder walls. Also they have nasty piston slap while cold from doing this. Just too many cons for such a small gain. We thought about doing it to the 360 we built but it has wimpy skirts and is going to see more spray than it ever should so we figured we will put them i the way the factory intended and maybe it will give us a better chance of staying together, Thanks for watching. Nolan.

With so many good 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum engines out there I don't know why anybody wouldn't want to start with a more powerful platform to begin with. Out of necessity during the COVID lockdowns I pieced together a strong 360 with ported 318 heads for my Dart but I'm replacing it with a 5.9 magnum in the near future

I built a 360 Magnum last year full build it is on my channel. Very budget build ran 11.3 on a 100 shot 12.2 on pump gas with all 1959 suspension. Has more to squeeze out of it. New suspension set up is in and ready for this spring. Hoping for 10.99 on 100 shot.

In 99% of the cases yes. But I would take a 283sbc over a 305sbc. Hope all is going well for you man.
@AndyGeesGarage5 ай бұрын
@@wildrosegarage4208 yes when things like bore and stroke ratios are considered. The 283 with its 3 7/8ths bore , 3” stroke and relatively beefy cylinder walls meant they readily accepted another 1/8th” bore getting the 301” which was the king sbc until the 327 showed up in ‘62. Other ohv V8s had issues that blocked them from realizing their potential. The 318 is tough as nails but was never intended to be a performance engine, much like the Chevy 307, that’s why they built the 340. I could never understand why Chrysler didn’t just have a 340 with different levels of performance and parked the 318. They should have built a 400+ inch performance LA based engine.
@wildrosegarage42085 ай бұрын
@@AndyGeesGarage I hear what you are saying maybe the 318 was kept due to cast piston and cast crank just cheap to make and they already had the tooling maybe even some of the old poly 318 stuff worked dont know, to be honest. I know a 360 makes a better truck type motor. than a 340. And a 301sbc in a 4spd gasser is the best sound your ears will ever hear, Thats fact.

@@AndyGeesGarage I feel the same way. In the 90’s I had a 86 D150 pickup with a 318 and it was gutless. My buddy had a D250 with a 360 and it was so much better in every way. In college, I had an 87 Caprice police pkg. with a 350 and my buddy had a 89 Dodge Diplomat police pkg. with a 318. It had 360 heads from the factory and a Quadrajet from the factory. He changed the cam, put dual exhaust and my Chevy was bone stock and I would blow him away everytime. My dad had an 86 5th Ave with a 318 and the only way to get onto a highway was to floor it in 1st and 2nd gear. That car would have been such a better car with a 360 or even with a Quadrajet than that “Lean Burn” which was absolutely undisputed the worst fuel system ever made. I was ready to bolt some 915 Js on an an old timer said "dont do that you lose your compression..."

I ran a solid lifter 273 with 3.91. I used a 360 cast intake and a 850 CFM thermoquad. Worked very well with the air door spring tight so the secondarys would not open until 3000rpm. It had 14" tires shifted it at 6000rpm had a reworked factory stall 904 that would flash at around 2200. 65 barracuda. Fast for what I was working with
