Fred should be more celebrated among the Blues' greats. His guitar work gives me chill bumps and his songs encapsulate the very best elements of the Blues that transcends time. God I am glad I lived long enough to have discovered this guy.

When you look up ‘Blues’ on Wikipedia, the first picture you find is a picture of Fred McDowell. Doesn’t get better than that - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues

I heard Mississippi Joe, and Mississippi John, and now Mississippi Fred the first time today. All of them were great, because they played from their own hearts and souls, and they each had a story to tell, sometimes sad, lonely, other times more optimistic, reconciled to life as it is, as it was, as it can be.

I am not even sure why but this man - this song - moves me to tears. The sound is so unbelievably rich.

Jimmy Reed was another great one in my book . somtimes you can hear his wife singing quietly in his ear helping him with the words in his later recordings because of his demencia . I loved his stuff as l was a harmonica player when l was a young one .l stole a lot of his licks..

Mississippi Fred McDowell is The Man! Undisputed King of Raw Delta/Hill Country Blues. His uncle showed him to use an old steak-bone dried in the hot Mississippi sun for a slide around 1915-ish. He played the street corners in Memphis in the 1920s.

He breathes the Blues from his heart through that guitar like gospel music does in the wee wee hours, when all but the Living Soul is fast asleep. How many guitarists from the 60s onward, took a lesson from Fred & those who gave birth to the real Blues.
