The Mississippi River is heating up and that means spring bass are too. I'm out in search of pre spawn largemouth bass using two of my favorite spring bass lures.

i fish the Lower Wisconsin river primarily, my wife and i ran into pre-spawn smallies a week ago friday, got 2 bite offs by northerns, a channel cat and a couple short walleyes and about 20 or so smallies, all caught on vmc jigs and gulp twister tail grubs, went back a few days later to same spots and bass were gone and channel cats were numerous, including a 32" that didn't want to go into the net too bad, all on jig/twistertail grubs, night crawlers barely got bothered by anything.

1:07 I bought 10 of these Mach 1 Speed Sticks (6'10" MH Fast) at Scheels in Eau Claire last month for $24/rod -- I literally use them for everything and I love them. I have nicer rods but fishing out of an aluminum boat can beat up my equipment.

I caught two males on beds last night, in pool 5A. The water was so high that it took me 2.5 hours to figure out where they were hanging out. They were on the "normal water level - shoreline" with about 5' of water over their heads. I thought they'd push way back, super shallow but that wasn't the case.

*as soon as the males got in the boat, they were peeing everywhere...the spawn isn't too far

It seems to be different from pool to pool. Some pools warm faster than others and even certain areas within the pools. This weekend caught some pre spawn and post spawn.

Any thoughts on the backwater lakes up near Trempealeau? Thinking about bringing the kayak over in the next couple weeks and explore some of the waters of Third, Round and Mud.

Those are some good options in high water but the road getting to those lakes may be flooded. Just something to consider, I haven’t been back there since the river came up so I can’t say for sure.

Trailer hook would of gotten those short strikes. Always wanted to bass fish the Mississippi.

I agree that trailer hooks help hookups but tend to hook fish in the gills and tongue so I try not to use them much.

Those areas of the river that are normally inaccessible now hold fish. Find the areas that look very green and weedy on Google Earth and start exploring there. These areas will normally have lower flow and clean water.

Do you change your fishing style much with the high water levels? Is the backwater by Verchota difficult to navigate when the water levels return to normal. I will be getting out on pool 5, 6, and 7 this year for the first time ever.

There are always places on the river that are fishable in high water. I look for shallow backwater marshes that are normally way too shallow to access. These areas will have cleaner water and if there is a bit of flow there will be fish.

The water is high but the fish don’t stop eating. Find clean water with a bit of flow and you’ll find fish.
