Voting in MS is so discouraging, even as a white person. You keep hearing "go vote go vote" and you DO go vote. But the gerrymandering is so obscene here, that your vote is just a sheet of toilet paper flushed down the toilet. AND... even when a striking majority of people want something to change (i.e. over 70 percent of Mississippians voted to legalize medical marijuana), the people in power will do everything they can to undermine and negate the will of the people. It's infuriating. I can only imagine how much harder it is for people of color, who have many more roadblocks when it comes to having their voices heard. Democracy doesn't really exist here. An ex of mine said that her great uncle simply vanished in Mississippi. He was never to be seen again. She believes he was abducted by a white group of people after a conflict. I asked her if they ever Googled his name to check for any record or indication of his existence. She said nothing has ever turned up.

For those of you not familiar with Jackson geography, "the east side of 55" is still a predominantly white and "old money" area of town within the city limits of Jackson. In the last 20 years, many of these people have moved north to the satellite town of Madison, which is considered the yuppy capital of Mississippi. But there are still quite a lot of moneyed whites living in communities like Eastover, lying immediately east of Interstate 55. I'm sure they do not suffer from lead poisoning from contaminated water. However, the west side of Interstate 55 is a wasteland of destitution and crime, underfunded schools, and homes that are literally falling down around the resident's' heads. Segregation is still alive and well in this state, and it is very entrenched. Generational wealth (or lack thereof) is very much at the heart of this segregation. No laws are needed to maintain this status quo. Hollywood, in their attempt to capture this, always get it very very wrong. We are not stuck in the 1960s, but the reality of modern day Mississippi is almost worse in its insidious, unspoken, covert racism that refuses to die.

Oh bull. The same water system serves all of Jackson. East of 55 is under the same boil water notice as the west side. And by the way, the water system is the responsibility of the city, not the state. The only reason for the state to have to be involved is because the black democrat run city is failing to do its job. Blacks can pretty much all go to college for free in Mississippi between the numbers HBCUs, pell grants and scholarships to "white" colleges. The reason Jackson is falling apart is because of generations of entitled blacks teaching their kids to be lazy and entitled. Now they are running around Jackson with their pants down around their ankles shooting one another pretty much daily which has run off all the businesses, which brought down the tax rolls which lead to no money to fix the roads, fund the schools or to fix the water systems. Jackson would be worse than Africa if it wasn't for those last few whites still living there and paying taxes.

My ex's brother was going to a school function, prom, at the Bolivar County Community Center. He was turned away for being black. Since the location of the event was privately funded by a parent, not the school, this was permitted.

I figured that Mississippi, along with Alabama and Georgia and other southern states, had serious "issues" when I was about 6-7 years old in the early 1960s. I got that from watching "law enforcement" attack the Freedom Riders and others pressing for civil rights with batons, dogs, and fire hoses. And I was a little white girl in a medium sized city in the upper Midwest. I know now that my area had racial issues then and now, but I got a very early education about southern socio-economic "challenges." Not much has changed in 60 years. Btw, I live in Colorado now. We have our challenges, too, but at least we have a state government that ensures we all have the right to vote, easily and conveniently.

I am from Mississippi and I keep my residency in Mississippi (I travel full time in a van and work seasonally). When I’m carded, I’m ALWAYS told, “I’ve never seen one from Mississippi before” and my response is, “people can’t afford to leave.” I left with $250 and my car and managed to make it. My mother was a social worker with the health department and made home visits. People in the rest of the country don’t realize just how bad it is there. How such a large percentage live like they’re in a 3rd world country. They only changed the flag after their SEC college football was threatened….

If the census says 40% of the state is black, but only 10-15-20% of the voters are black, that should be grounds for a Federal lawsuit. @@ivanvillamil2764 Yes, 40% should determine every election. I don't believe there's that much apathy among black voters in one of the birthplaces of the civil rights. People died there for the vote. Compare Mississippi to Michigan and Minnesota, for examples. In Michigan, blacks are only 13.5 percent. In Minnesota, about 7%. In both states, the black vote determines and tips elections. In fact, I knew Biden had won Michigan just assessing the turnout from talking to my bla k cousins in Detroit. If they all go, the Democrat wins. And recall Jesse Jackson actually won the Democratic Primary in Michigan in 1980 largely on the enthusiasm of the black vote. Again, just 13.4% of the total population. Add to that a large portion of the people in Detroit have Mississppi roots. Same people. Something wrong inbMississippi.

What suppression? Anyone with an ID that's 18 and not a felon can vote. When Mississippi passed voter ID they offered to go to anyone's home that couldn't get an ID any other way. Of three million people less than 20 needed that service. Blacks don't vote because they don't want to.

When Mississippi passed voter ID, they offered to go to anyone's home that couldn't get an ID any other way. Out of three million people, they had less than 20 that took the state up on the offer. Voter ID's don't stop anyone from voting.

I’m in Missouri. It’s difficult to tell just how many Dems and republicans r in the my state bc we don’t have to declare a party when registered. However, our 2020 vote for Trump was around 55% and Biden around 40%, yet we r dominated by the Republican Party bc they cram tons of Dems in just 2 districts and then divide small Dem towns by putting them in rural red counties to essentially dilute those Dem votes. The GOP drew 6 safe republican districts, 2 safe Dem seats, and 1 “competitive” district which is made up of wealthy, usually republican voters w/a smaller number of less affluent Dem voters. The Republican candidate always win. This is in a near 50/50 state, yet u’d never know that. I think we need to stop the redistribution of federal $’s from the blue states to the red states. Poor performing red states need to feel the pain of the Republican leadership is doing to their state. Mississippi and AL being the worst at taking the most federal $’s compared to what they pay in for federal taxes. I don’t know Mississippi’s situation all that well but in MO, it’s St. Louis and Kansas City which fund much of the rural counties in MO, yet we have little Dem representation bc the GOP has changed the election laws to work better and better for them while the issues in the cities aren’t being addressed, like gun violence which has caused many to leave the cities and made it very difficult to get outside investment. What if the cities or parts of the state push for independence, to become a new state? In my state, St. Louis and Kansas City have no use for the rural counties in MO. Those rural counties do nothing to help the cities and actually harm the cities. Perhaps some could join in w/neighboring cities in other states which declare their independence, like Kansas City, mo joking Kansas City, KS or STL joining in w/IL counties just over the bridge. Then the rural counties will see just how horrible their GOP policies r and lose 1/2 the money of the cities w/fund them. The cities could then be their own states and make up their own policies. The cities would gain 2 more blue senators and most all of our reps in congress would be blue to represent our interests.
