In Greece we call it pilafi (πιλάφι), I think the recipe was brought over from Persia during the time of Alexander the Great, there are very many different versions. From where my parents came from in Greece, the rice is fluffy and cooked in a meat stock, then the mixture placed on top. My mum used to make one with really tender meat, mushrooms and a bolognaise-like thick sauce and a variety of vegetables, was amazing.
