Salt Dough Gingerbread Houses | Christmas Crafts | Miss Mustard Seed

I have made gingerbread houses for many years and I decided to make some out of salt dough this year to see how they compared and how long they would keep. I think the result is pretty successful! You'd never know that these were made out of wax, paint, and inedible dough!

Recipe -
1 cup all-purpose flour (plus a little more for dusting and if flour is too wet)
1/2 cup table salt
3/4 cup ground cinnamon
3/4 cup of water (plus a little more, if dough is too crumbly)
Mix together all ingredients until they are combined. Dump onto a lightly floured surface and knead. Add more water or flour 1 teaspoon at a time until dough holds together when squeezed in your fist.
Roll dough to approximately 1/8-1/4" thickness and cut into gingerbread house shapes using cutters or a template.
Bake at 200 degrees for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool on a cooling rack and assemble with white wax and a hot glue gun. Decorate with white dimensional paint.

I tried making your bigger gingerbread house years ago, and I failed. I had a hard time assembling it . I used the glue gun after frosting failure and it kept collapsing. These smaller ones look much more manageable. They are so sweet and the drift of snow at the end made me smile.

Yes, I prefer making smaller ones. They are just so much easier to assemble and display. I made a large one the first year and have just made smaller ones since.
