I have had phalaenopsis orchids for years and i have learnt that im very good with them. Recently I brought orchid name labelled "Cambria" I knew it was very weak ( almost fully dead root system) and thanks to your videos i was able to save it. I checked and it has made new roots and new growth. Mine had very dark red/purpleish skinny flowers and i haven´t seen meny of those anywhere. I wish someday i will find real name for it!

I’m building a 60 gallon orchidarium.. the soil for ferns at bottom level is a mix of: calcined clay, fir bark, cypress, blended sphagnum, rinsed charcoal, and coconut fiber. Will the Red Fantasy and twinkle do well in this mix? It will be very loose, not compacted.

Hey Danny! Thank you very much for all your advices! Learning a lot from you. I had a question though. A lot of people say that, in order to make it rebloom, oncidiums need to be put outside during summer time. Is it an obligation? What do you think? Hi Danny, I have to tell you my thoughts about the pseudobulbs in oncidium genera. The environment from wich this kind of orchid's were found is in the tropics wich have a rainy season and a least humid one. These orchids need constant humidity around their roots. So if in nature the rule of all living things is the maximum benefit with the lower spent of energy. Why will an orchid use energy to store water if in the environment where she lives humidity is constantly available? My theory is: Because the water that they receive has very low nutrients the pseudobulbs do not store water only but nutrients. My experience is that if you have wrinkle pseudobulbs with good roots if you give them only pure water (0 TDS) they will take longer to refill that if you give them fertilized water and plenty of light. What do you think?

well it depends on the heat, if it's 30-32 deg celsius they might be ok in the shade, if it's more, I'm not sure how they will handle it. In any case, moisture is the key with Oncidiums, so you could experiment with one or two next summer.

I just bought a large Sherry Baby and I love it. Looks really healthy even has new growth. The poor plant is too big for the pot. There are 7 mature bulbs squeezed into a 5 inch pot. I want to repot it now but it has one spike in bloom. Can I repot it now without losing the spike? This looks to be the last flower spike. Others have been cut. Would it be best to just wait?
@MissOrchidGirl10 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah, in some cases repotting while in spike can lead to flower drop and excessive bulb shriveling, if it is absolutely necessary I do it, but since your orchid is not sick then you can wait until the spike is done :) just keep it well watered, being that the pot is full of roots it will drink a lot of water fast :)

When and how do you prune a colmanara wildcat orchid? About 1 1/2 inch above the second node from the base? Or, 1 inch from where the blossom stalk originates? When: when all blooms have fallen off?
@pennyjoe1007 жыл бұрын
Marlene Walters I would cut about 1inch from the base of the flower spike. This is to be done when the flowers fall. This way, the orchid can focus on new growth and roots.

@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
+john mickel well, Phrags are a different beast, they are litophitic or semi terrestrial as far as I know, not epyphite like most orchids we can find to buy. So holes might not be needed :) they do still want a fluffy and airy media though but they like to be moist all the time as far as I know. i was wondering what the difference was between intergeneric names and oncidium names , were ? like i am interested in buying an orchid called brascidiostele , and i'm pretty sure it's a hybrid from brassia and half oncidium ? I am really confused as there isn't really a way of categorizing intergeneric species except through their names , and finding out how to care for them. I'm wondering if you could do a video to explain the names of intergenerics a little bit how you explained the abbreviations of cattleya's. I'm sure it's very different but as a beginner its very confusing to understand the names and what they mean such as miltassia , aliceara , beallara , brascidiostele as mentioned above.

Hi danny, i am from norway and im recently bought a onicidium without flower..So my question is does it need a winter rest durings dark period or needs reguler water as phalanopsis... when its actual flowering time? thanks in advance..
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
+Mahmudul Haque Hi, Oncidium orchids don't need winter rests, they have continuous growth and they need water all throughout the year. If in winter time your environment gets colder you might notice the water evaporates slower, so the frequency of watering might need to be reduced due to this. But the best thing to do is to watch how fast the media dries and when it is almost completely dry you can water. This can be every 3 days 5 days or 7 days, it all depends on your environment and how warm or dry it is. They can bloom whenever a new pseudobulb matures, they don't have a specific flowering season so you can have blooms in spring, summer, fall and winter :P

@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
Thanushan Nagendran you can spray the aerial roots every day or couple of days and it should be fine. Water doesn;t damage the leaves, the problem is if it doesn't evaporate in a few hours and gets trapped for days between the leaves.

Trick5t3r Games Hi, sorry for the late response I was on vacation. Maybe a repot will do it good, moss might be decomposing. Hi Randy, are you sure the orchids are potted in soil? sometimes they come potted in coconut husk that is milled somehow. It is a bit better than soil :P I personally preffer bark or moss to that fine milled coconut husk, if they are recent purchases you can wait a bit until the flowers fade. But make sure to not water too often, that medium retains a lot of water!

I got it with spikes already and it grows in a quite bad media (i don't know if it is peat + moss + bark chips or just broken down media of bark) anyways imho it needs to be repotet asap as the media dries for more than a week. I don't want to lose the plant but I'd like to keep blooms as well. Usually i repot them after they have finished blooming, in this case I don't want to wait.What do you suggest?

Hi, well sometimes blooms might fall after repotting, but sometimes they won't, depends how sick the orchid is actually and how much the roots get damaged. If the medium is just so horrible I would repot anyway, the mother orchid is more important than the flowers in my opinion.

Just found your channel, and subscribed, i am enjoying watching them, i have a question, and i am sure you have answered it in a video that i have not found yet but, i purchased a mtssa. Estrellita 'sweet señorita' she is in a 4 inch pot, and looks like she needs repotting in a 5 inch pot, what time of the year is best to repot? thanks.

+Clay Gresham Hi, well this is sort of a personal matter :) I usually repot any new orchid I buy because most of the times the media it comes with is old and degraded, many times I find snails and so on. So after I enjoy the blooms for 2 weeks or so, depends, I proceed to repot it. As a growth cycle, when they are done blooming they usually start to grow new shoots so the time coincides with when I should repot the orchid. As a general idea, many orchids are induced into blooming off season, they don't follow seasons anymore, at least for the time being. So when you should repot it is relative, the best time would be after it is done blooming, but repotting it whenever is absolutely needed is very ok as well :) some orchids have so many pseudobulbs that they seem to be in bloom for months, but they still grow new shoots while other psb are in bloom, so again you can see how the time of repotting is relative and depends on each orchid. If your orchid is just done blooming I would go ahead and repot it :)

+MissOrchidGirl I live in central Texas and keep my house around 70F to 78F in summer and 65F to 75F in winter roughly would an oncidium do well in these temperatures?
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
+foxheart877 yes I think that is appropriate for Oncidiums :)

Hi Danny I'm very new to the hobby of orchid growing despite having had some for several years and I recently bought six seedlings off ebay and one of them look very upset it's a bullophyllum concinnum do you have any tips also Ihave an oncidium near bloom so the tips provided were helpful
@MissOrchidGirl10 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, congrats on your purchases :) well orchid seedlings need more attention than mature ones as they are more fragile. The thing with them is that they need moisture so never forget to water them. They also need more warmth than mature orchids, so winter rests and cool downs are off the table until maturity. I'm not sure what has happened with the bulbo but there are some basic things you need to do, like changing the media and offer a more water retentive one, never let it stay bone dry and keeping it warm. Ventilation is still a must as they are prone to rotting. When fertilizing, give them a quarter of the amount until they start to grow rapidly. And other than that it's a bit of luck, sometimes some orchids are infected with viruses, although rarely but just tend to it as best as you can and hope it has no disease :)

My oncidium is watered well with good drainage but the pseudobulbs keep shriveling worse and worse. I don’t know what to do.

I have an orchid that I would like to know what it is. How can I send you a photo of it?

Oh, I had one question- For my oncidiums, should I give them a long long soak? I have been soaking them for a few hours at a time, maybe 2-3 hours each time I water. Is this good or bad or neutral? What length of soaking them do you recommend?
@MissOrchidGirl10 жыл бұрын
Hi Astrid, well it depends on the media you are using and your environment. If the temperatures are warm and you are using a non retentive mix like bark, a soak will benefit them as it will soak up the bark with water. A one hour soak is more than enough. If you are using sphagnum moss, long soaks are to be avoided as the moss already retains water and absorbs it very fast, coupled with low temperatures it won't be a good idea. So relate your watering technique to your environment and potting media and all should be fine :)

I've just got an oncidium with its roots in air (hold in a Basket). should I plant it in bark media?
@pennyjoe1007 жыл бұрын
pArtha no. The roots in the air are just that, air roots. If you would put them in the pot they would probably rot. They aren’t used to the high moisture. Roots in the air on oncidium orchids is normal. I can tell your a beginner. This is the #1 channel to go to for orchid care. She is very knowledgeable and accurate in her information. Good luck.

Thanks Kaitlyn, my oncidium is doing good. I have potted them in wood charcoal and coco chips mixture and trained them gradually to mixture, very little watering in between. They are in good condition and flower spikes growing and they are about to bloom.
