Thank you so much for all your videos. I was gifted an orchid at the beginning of the year and was determined not to kill it so found your content. I've since adopted seven more, including one cattleya. I had to rescue several of my orchids from abusive sphagnum moss use by the greenhouses/florists. A couple of them were completely compacted in nothing but the moss. Naturally most of their roots died. I've since repotted them in a mixture like you were showing that's about 40% moss and then the rest is non-absorbent materials like coconut husk, pumice, etc. They're so much happier now and all are regrowing new roots. I had one that was in a terrible environment of compacted moss inside a glazed, unventilated pot. Yikes! The 40/60 works for me as we have a whole-house humidifier that keeps the humidity inside at around 58-60%. Keep your wonderful content coming!

I am a beginner. I have had my first orchid for 2 months. I’ve lost some blooms and after looking at your videos, I repotted. It was packed so tightly with moss the roots were dying. I cleaned the moss out of the roots, and repotted with moss on the bottom and “orchid mix” to fill. I also poked some more holes in the pot as it only had one drainage hole in the bottom. I hope it works out 🤞

@@thomaselder7458 A year later it did bloom again! It needed a larger pot and I finally got my hands on larger orchid pots and replanted once more. I got rid of the ‘orchid mix’ as it was too much like soil. It’s now a mix of ceramic beads and moss. I’m still adjusting the water schedule but I think she’s happy. I’ve also added a mini orchid and another beautiful large phal. 😍

# 1 for me: I live in Southwest Florida, grow my orchids, in pots, outside on my lanai and, after discovering your channel this past May, I repotted all my orchids in spagnum moss😩. Well from June through November, it’s hurricane season here and the abondance of rain and level of humidity turned the spagnum moss into a permanent soaked sponge😱. 2 months later, I had to repot everything in a different medium! We never stop learning😉

This was extremely helpful because as beginners we don’t always know what Not to do. I didn’t know that a decorative pot was essential in avoiding algae, even though I always use them . And I didn’t know about compacted sphagnum moss either. So that’s good knowledge to have. Thanks for all the links for products too👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks so much for another great informative video. I have never owned an orchid until the spring. Bought 3 miniature orchids this spring from my local big box store. Watching you I now know they are hybrid phalanopsis. Of course they were in bloom. I ordered potting needs from Repotme and repotted them. They bloomed beautifully, then lost blooms and began to grow new leaves 😃. Doing well! But my concern has been watering as I live in northern Michigan! You don't get more extreme weather change than here. Hot and muggy summers then cold and real dry winters. So watching this video I think I will be changing from a rinse through water in the summer when it's real humid and moist to a water leaving some in the bottom of the container in the cold dry winters. Again thank you for the great information. Sharon from Michigan.

Have you tried coconut coir? I'm growing orchids and African violets and the research I found suggested that "coco coir" is more environmentally beneficial (since peat bogs are natural carbon sinks and take awhile to grow) and works better than sphagnum moss! I'd love to see you try this on an orchid if you would. Thanks so much for all the info and your hard work!!

I had bad quality moss some time ago, now I am only using the Besgrow one, same one Dani uses. Its really the best one you can get out there. :) I am growing my phals quite similar with a layer mix of Besgrow moss and Orchiata bark, most of them under artificial light, but I soak the pot 1-2 times a week, it really dries out very fast with artificial light and small ventilators. I tried some of them with pure bark as well before and for me the summer blooming hybrids and species really need the moss to keep the roots happy and healthy. So thumbs up for the moss mix! :)

Thank you so much for your advise in the video! I tried a few experiment: 1. Pot of orchid with full spaghnum moss 2. Pot with mix spaghnum moss & bark chip on the top + bottom layer And the 1st pot starts to grow mold after 4 days 😅 so I decided to quickly change it to mix of spaghnum moss + bark. Hopefully it will be better now because with full bark chip in my environment, it tends to dry very quickly. My environment usually is about 30-40% humidity, and hence, I use humidifier to maintain between 40-60% humidity now.

Thank you for this video! I understand better now why one of my orchids has sphagnum moss that has turned green from algae. I think my problem is I have not put the pot inside a slightly larger pot, and also, I did not cover the top layer of the pot with bark. Maybe I used too much moss as well, I should go for a 50/50 mix as you suggest. I have a very hot, humid, sunny environment here in the summer. In the winter, temperatures drop quite a bit, but the room is still flooded with sunshine.

My orchids have done so much better after switching to your method of using sphagnum moss as a “wick”. Just plain potting mix dries out too fast on top and stays wet on the bottom, but a bit of moss added strategically throughout keeps it even. (In my environment and with a bit of trial and error, that is.) Thank you for all the tips and videos!!! :D

Hi, Thanks for video. I have a quick question: I bought a super packed one (like a brick, just like what you show in this video). When I only need just a small amount, do I just break a small portion off it, or I have to add water to the entire "brick" to make it expand?This leads to another question: does long fiber or short fiber matter? I think another reason why spagnum moss can kill an orchid is that not all sphagnum Moss is the same. The kind Danni uses which seems to be the purest is not like a top known brand that I purchased thinking that because it was spagnum it was the same. Unfortunately for me and my orchid, it was not. The moss that I bought was small stumpy course clumps. The strands of Danni's Moss is fine long and fluffy. As a beginner, I thought what's the difference ?Big difference. I'm thinking that the root of my orchids probably felt like they had on an itchy sweater all the time with that coarse Moss around it. I was very careful with my watering so I don't think it was that and I really wish I could insert a picture of the two mosses side by side so you can see the difference. It definitely raises eyebrows. That orchid unfortunately did not make it and I'm thinking it was a media problem and not a watering problem🤷🏽 I recently just bought a new orchid with a beautiful little sister that is already planted in NEW ZEALAND spagnum moss and will be repotted in the same. I'll keep you guys updated on the results. If it works for Danni I'm sure it'll work for me 😊

I got a miniphal last week. It was in a seedling plug so I moved it to spagnummoss. The miniphals that wasn’t in their plug where in spagnum so thought that was the best move. It had a lot of healthy roots and growing root tips. It has 3 blooming flower spikes with buds. It was in good condition but now it is starting to show signs of dehydration. The leaves are soft and starting to feel wrinkly. It also dried up one bud on the third shorter spike. The roots still looks plump and green. It looks fluffy and not compressed. I use a humidifier. I have alternated between having it in between two southern windows and about 1-2m in. Unsure what it likes still. In Sweden the sun is starting to get a lot milder. Suggestions? I had Tripp’s in another room. I check constantly for any sign of infestation. Update: More buds and flowers have started to dry so I guess I induced a bud blast. It continues to appear more dehydrated. Looked at the roots, they are still healthy. I hope me removing the plug hasn’t given it full transplant shock. We learn from our mistakes I guess. It was so pretty with sooo many buds

Dani! I recently was dealing with algae! I was using a clear pot with no decorative pot and sphag/bark mix. What I found is that this way of growing is prone to algae growth since the pot is clear. I had to repot all of the orchids that were this way because I think the algae was taking all of the water/nutrients from the orchid. It ALMOST killed my Phal bellina. My takeaway from this is that if you chose to grow in a clear pot, go bareroot to avoid algae growth.

It's in a tiny pot, but as the plant is still small I was considering reusing the pot (have already added airholes) and using a spag moss set up for a year, then potting up a size to a mix next year..appreciate any advice!

Hi Danny, loved the video. Have you ever sterilized moss? I have an orchid cut on moss (Like your ICU) and it has like spores (The orchid). I only had the orchid for a month until the spores appeared so I want to sterilize it and change it to a different pot so I wonder if I can reuse that moss
@OrdinaryEXP
@OrdinaryEXP 2 жыл бұрын
Sphag moss, even good quality stuff, are rather affordable. It's better to use new moss than reusing existing moss since the moss likely has spores on it as well and it is hard to sterilize moss without leaving chemical residues behind, maybe unless you are boiling them. Moss with spore _will_ re-infect your orchid cutting thus making repotting useless.

I live in a hot and dry climate and I have fifteen Phalaenopsis orchids(which were seedlings and rescue orchids not very healthy or mature ones) and +100 other houseplants and I'm also going through some health issues that make me lazier than usual so my poor orchids are usually suffering from dryness.right now they're in a mixture of bark, coco chips, leca and perlite and their medium dries out competely a day after soaking them in water!! I wished I could use sphagnum moss as their medium but unfortunately sphagnum moss is almost impossible to find in my country. once I managed to find a bit but it was sooo expensive. I can buy at least two huge orchids with the price I had to pay for just one handful of spaghnum moss so I just bought a very little amount. is there anything I can use as medium that is as moisture retentive and also airy as sphagnum moss? there is jungle moss widely available here and it's very cheap but it's green and not processed. I have boiled it and soaked it in hydrogen peroxide and fungicide but at last couldn't make myself use it for my orchids because I was afraid that might do more harm than good

@@ernestoaguilar1698 honestly? If its otherwise happy for now, i would just remove the green moss from the top (i use tweezers when i see any) and put on a layer of bark. I personally prefer to wait till after the blooms are gone or at least well established before i do anything drastic like changing all of the medium unless the plant is obviously distressed.

OMG #6 just happened to me. I did like 6ish _beautiful_ repots, & about a week later 3 or 4 of them were FILLED with that awful green/blue/gray mold. I now have a full infirmary (That's what I call my area for recovering orchids lol) & a completely rootless minimark. A few of my other special gals are suffering too because of it. I can only find mini marks now in the US for like $85 now 😵💔 but hey, if there's green, there's hope 💚

Here in the UK I don't need sphagnum moss - bark is enough, however, I do have a few very thirsty orchids (usually the larger oncidiums / brassia / dendrobiums) and in summer I was really struggling to keep up with watering so I added a sprinkle of sphagnum moss throughout the pots and it made a big difference, so much better and they don't dry out anymore. Much better! Incidentally, I bought compressed moss and made the mistake of rehydrating the whole block and ended up with bags and bags of the stuff which I had to spread all over the dining table to dry out so I could store it! Note to self - a little tiny bit of compressed moss goes a looooong way! 😂

Hi, there is no set time to water orchid pots, no matter the potting mix, best thing is to water whenever they are dry, or almost completely dry, whenever that is. If your mix stays wet for more than 2 weeks and it's not a self watering oot, then it would be safer to add more non retentive medium, such as bark. Anything in between can be good 😁

Will there still be a setback if you go from 100% spag to a mixture of bark and moss?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends, watering frequency plays a role as well. Set back can occur from other reasons too that just coincide with the change in medium. For sure the closest you keep the conditions to the original ones, the less 'theoretical' setback. The further away you go from the original moisture / air balance, the more risk of losing more roots.

@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you! Usually the orchids I find are in 100% spag and I much rather prefer bark because I always end up with white fuzz no matter what I do when I try spag. I also always end up with a set back when I convert to 100% bark, but after a year they look good and bounce back. It takes a while though. Maybe I can gradually convert the 100% spag little by little with each repot and add a little more bark each time? Maybe this could be an option to convert to bark? I bought my first novelty and it will come in moss. I would like to convert it slowly to a mix of both spag and bark like the pots you showed.

Most of my orchids are Phalaenopsis. Most all arrive in small, cheap plastic 3-inch containers packed full of Sphagnum moss. The moss was black and the moss was wet. I have just finished repotting all of my 20 Phalaenopsis orchids. The damage that Sphagnum moss did to these orchids and their roots was a real shame. I will never use an orchid mix that is 100% Sphagnum moss. It may be great in transporting these plants from Taiwan, but if left in this mix, the orchids will surely die.

hi Danny, I like to request your assumption to why the growers nurseries even renown ones PACKED their pots with sphagnum moss that it feels like brick.(maybe this is a thing only in USA, east coast...more specifically NY?) I have my own theories but I just want to hear it from you and make it official 😁 my guess is that it has become compressed because it has been in the pot for a while...and the grown roots pressed them down to that state...another assumption is maybe they want to water it as least times as possible but that one I feel conflicted as its seems the more compressed they are the less water retentive it becomes...dunno... and one more thing that I always wonder, the most nurseries/growers seem to care less about algae...I find them gross and that is why I end up repotting them even if I want to leave it alone. so these are my ??? thank you !
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, well the answer is quite anticlimactic haha they pack it to keep the orchid upright in place :)))) but yes it gets to be like a brick after roots grow a lot and further compress it, so you were right 😁

I'm not sure if you've mentioned it in another video, but a quick search didn't get me an answer, but what are your thoughts on growing orchids in live sphagnum moss? And what are your thought on getting your own sphagnum moss colony locally in the wild and cultivating that for your orchids? I've been having a hard time finding dried sphagnum moss for a decent price in my area, and after searching in some local woods around watersources, I was able to find a small patch of healthy looking sphagnum moss, so I've taken a little bit home to grow it myself. Also in one video you've gotten a little bit of live sphagnum moss from reviving it out of the dead moss you bought, did you cultivate that further? if so, how did that go and do you have any tips for growing sphagnum moss?

@@resilience4lyfe331 I'm pretty sure ALL orchid societies in the South are snooty. I was raised in Louisiana and I remember my mother swearing to never go to another meeting and got into African Violets instead. I don't mess with them at all. I figured out how to get air plants to thrive and then finally figured out how to get orchids to thrive. Mostly 😅. I have learned that Vandas do really well just hung in the window in a basket here and I also had to just not purchase a phal in moss. They break my heart. If they've sat in the store or garden center for any length of time here, most of the roots are already mush.

A recent week of heavy summer rain nearly killed (and is probably going to kill) my 2 phal keikis in 100% moss medium 😂 One has a single 1" root left while the other had no root at all and the bottom tip of the stem has black rot. I squeezed most water out of the moss after watering and loosened the moss (not that it wasn't loose in the first place) but It. Just. Never. Dry. Out. Should have added bark to the medium. BTW after bumbling through growing orchid for 10yrs I could say that Spagmoss is THE SH*T. Long, fluffy, rarely has any leaves or twigs in the medium and I seldom have problem with rots and fungi when using this brand (maybe except in very bad weather). Unfortunately in where I live none of the shops bother selling this brand - they just sell cheapo dark brown moss scraps sealed in clear plastic bag and tell people to change medium every year.
