It’s hard to watch now knowing how it all ends badly for all of them. George will die, Missy will suffer as a teenager being used by boys, Mary will fall apart, Georgie will be called upon to try to care for everyone but, himself and his own happiness will suffer even as he grows financially wealthy, and Sheldon will leave the family for his own future in higher education oblivious to the pain and suffering of his family thanks to Georgie’s sacrifices.

This is what bad parenting looks like. When you don't engage with your kids and give them a idea of what's going on in a way that minimizes the problems, you not only let them think the worse and bad things tend to happen. On the one hand I've always hated how the show tried to present the Coppers as a normal all american family (despite what was said about them in tbbt), but I applaud them for going into topics like this.

It should be recalled that most of the information we had about the Coopers on TBBT was from Sheldon a highly unreliable source who misinterpreted all sorts of things on TBBT because of his narcistic judgmental bias against anyone who ever slighted his personal vanity in any way and general lack of interest in other people. The best thing about this show is how wonderfully it illustrates the problems with making snap judgments in complex situations which we all tend to do way too much of these days. The Coopers are not a dysfunctional family but a fairly normal decent one actually. None of them end up murdering anybody or drinking cyanide in a suicide cult or drug addicts or convicted felons. One of them is destined to win a Nobel prize let's remember. One becomes a successful small businessman. George and Mary had some marital issues but mostly over mutual misunderstandings they probably would have worked out eventually if George didn't died from a heart attack sometime in the next four episodes. Missy manages to get over her teen angst and reconcile with her family. There are far more dysfunctional families we see in the news everyday but statistically they're atypical because it's just the nature of the news to focus on the abnormal and shocking.

George and Mary may not be perfect, but it is not easy to be a parent, even more if you consider someone like Missy. Missy is a brat, that's way too different than just passing through a hard moment. Maybe you see this as something awful, but it's not. This is what happens with first world countries people. Their lives are too comfortable, so they think small things are a tragedy. I aim you to see how is life outside the suburbs. Missy is too spoiled, that's all. For kids like that, you need to show them how the real world is, outside their first world county bubble. This is nothing compared to what other people and me had to deal at her age.

That would be fine with me, but I'm not holding my breath. Perhaps we should simply imagine and post our own ideas for these characters for the entertainment of fans. For example, what happens to Missy after she is separated from her husband and has two children, presumably on the way to four children? Will she be a single mother of four from perhaps three different fathers? How could she become separated from her husband while she is pregnant? Missy is an engaging character on Young Sheldon, and first appears on TBBT as a hot babe charming the boys as a young woman. But can she build a good life for herself, or is she destined to be another victim of Modern Womanism? Should she, for example, have married Raj or Howard?
