A more common, healthy response would be: 'Sure, what's up?' If you've done something stupid so many times that she immediately gets suspicious when you tell her that, something's gone wrong in your marriage for a pretty long time already.

Except Mary, as much as I like her, is guilty of keeping a lot of secrets away from her own family. She lied about secretly saving money, refused to discuss Georgie's childhood until Georgie was infuriated with Mary, Meemaw told Missy about Mary's past (not Mary), and Mary seems to either be overpowering or unable to take charge because she converted to Christianity 4 years into their marriage while George Sr remains a non-religious beer/brisket loving Texan all throughout.

You gotta admit, Georgie wasn't really in the wrong here. Sure, he shouldn't have been out gambling, but it was meemaw who convinced him to come. The only reason he drove was to help her not get in trouble, and while it was wrong and didn't end up helping, he did his best

there was probably a payphone at the track and he could have called George to come pick them up.
