Worth mentioning, make sure you disable all the vehicle assist programs, stability control, traction control - just use 4WD and diff-lockers if fitted.

If you're in low range all that gets turned off automatically. And if you're driving in sand in high range you're an idiot.

I got stuck in that little dune before Calcup too! Took hours to get me over it… pretty sure it was my tyre pressures as after I let them down I glided up Calcup and the rest of the dunes.

Glad you got out ok! I was running 12PSI and the Pajero Sport made light work of it. Think it would have been a different story on higher pressures. Cheers Mark

It's amazing just how clever the modern electronics in these things is isn't it? I was driving my Sport on desert sand tracks which were very hard packed and easy. I had dropped it out of sand mode to drop the revs a bit and also unlocked the centre diff so it was in AWD mode. I got caught out by a boggy bit half way up a big hill and on a junction that was all chopped up. It basically started to bog down and then you could feel it moving the power around to get as much traction as it could find. It surprised me just how well it did considering it really wasn't configured properly. Thanks for the video.

Yes for sure - modern 4x4s are very good indeed. Stock they come capable and you don’t have to do a lot to make them very impressive off road. Running correct pressures definitely is key on the sand. Thanks for watching! Cheers Mark

Any issue so far with your Pajero Sport? Looking at buying a second hand one. It will mainly be used school run and towing a boat. Thanks!
@Perth4WDandCamping Жыл бұрын
Sold the PS last Sept, mainly due to wanting more capacity for towing and a bigger engine, however for 3 years prior it was a great rig for us. Fantastic offroad and good on fuel (overall great all-rounder). Only thing to watch for is spilt intercooler hoses (common around 100km) - so recommend putting on some quality after market ones which isn’t expensive. Being a turbo diesel intake manifold can get blocked up over time, so as the car gets over 100km might be worth getting it cleaned (if your purchase has a catch can fitted then this will prolong any build up). Cheers Mark

Few people have asked for a walk around vid so I’ll need to get my act into gear and make one! No power mods - just running an iDrive. Plenty happening around the suspension and bigger tyres make a big difference on the sand. Thanks for watching! - Cheers Mark

In sand mode in the terrain settings the electronics basically keep the engine at around 2300 rpm which is peak torque, from memory, and 8 gears means that they just keep in the best gear for that. I tried driving mine with the paddles for a bit of fun but the car did it much better. I don't bother with them now, just point and shoot.
@oldbloke2042 жыл бұрын
@@Perth4WDandCamping So are you running bigger rims as well? I have OME suspension in mine with A/T's and it really doesn't look much different to yours but I can't see what size tyres you have on.

Oh good to know! I've only done like 10mins in sand next to a river, but didn't have recovery tracks or even air down, so I wasn't too game to get stuck in... Still rolled through without fuss. I got a great dyno tune for towing, so I'm keen to see how the extra torque at lower rpm translates on sand 👍 Thanks lads 🤜🤛

So you weren't running the car while winching? 10psi till you get round the bend at the top of Calcup, then air up to at least 17 to avoid tyre damage on the way out. Ol mate in the petty prado has a (too) heavy right foot ;-) Hellov a lot of force in that snatch. What we've done before is have a second vehicle up further behind the winching vehicle connected to it to act as an anchor. Can also put the winching car in 2wd, bog the back of it, then winch. Well done though. All fun and games :-) Here's a mate in a similar position on Bornholme (from my dashcams so not the greatest video quality) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqScY42EnMt5nq8

Another tip is when winching "through" a hill like that, is to change the angle of the winch cable using a tyre. I've not got one of doing it in anger, but here's what I mean pulling out a small tree I didn't want where it was ;-) Doing it like this you're winching up, so over a hill rather than through the top of the hill. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYSQlJ94irl8oKs

G’day thanks for watching and feedback 👍☺️. Car was running the whole time whilst winching but we think due to the long pull onto entry to the beach before the ‘real’ recovery.. It proved just too much for my battery.. Just before it broke down we were going to use Brett’s Everest as an anchor.. (hindsight hey!). Yes definitely a lot of force on the recovery 😬. We were out of options if not for the fiendly locals. I was running 12PSI and didn’t struggle but it was very soft indeed. Least we got through and a story to tell. Will check out your video 👍 Cheers Mark

Will you have another vehicle with you? I’m sure the Everest is up to the challenge. Personally I’d prefer another vehicle with me - just in case I get stuck. It can get very soft - even the track up from the beach

Way to much tyre pressure lads, trying to drive it way to hard and bashing your cars up. Lower pressure and crawl along and you shouldn’t have an issue. Did you notice how bulged the tyres were on the patrol that snatched you out vs how stiff all your tyres were lads. Also that snatch out was crazy man, no need for that, a couple of smaller snatches would have done the job. Looks like the winch and battery died as you car wasn’t running while winching ?
@Perth4WDandCamping2 жыл бұрын
12 PSI in the Pajero Sport on 33’s and no dramas. The bigger types also help to run lower pressures. With the Prado on 31’s sometimes not always possible to run as low. All pressures were low for the Callcup Climb. You do some momentum to get to the top. All fun and games and thankfully no one was hurt and vehicles all good 😅

@@collieyak971 not at all. Thanks for the feedback and good to hear from someone thats done the track a few times. Sorry I didn’t see the second part of your message. The reason the Patrol tyres bulged so much was it was running beadlocks meaning it could run right down to 5PSI to assist in the recovery. My winch failed due to battery issues as was getting a hammering that day - thankfully all good now (always have the car running whilst winching). You’ll see I put out another video on relocating the winch earth which will also assist in the future. Overall good experience to go through with some learnings for next time 👍
