As an adult I collect only low-grade - which helps since my mistakes are a lot less costly. But, my absolute biggest mistake was the sin of SELLING TOO SOON. I had bought both Spider-Man #129 and Hulk #181 for $100 bucks each (30 years ago). Turned around and sold them for $300 each and thought I was a genius - now I'm just kicking myself...

Makes sense, buying low grade is a great strategy imo. And absolutely, great point! Selling too soon, I think that is a big mistake and one that I know I've made ASM 129 and Hulk 181, who knew they'd be so expensive these days? At least you tripled your money at the time, that's always a good thing. But I hear you, look where they are now Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Cool video. If I had my time again, I'd start going after keys much earlier. For most of my time collecting I bought for enjoyment of the stories, but 30 years later I've got a ton of filler books that I will probably never read again. Another mistake to avoid is the "consolation prize", i.e. missing out on the book you really wanted then buying other books to feel like you at least got something but then not having the money to buy the book you really wanted the next time it comes up.

Thanks for watching and subscribing, appreciate the support! Yeah, I have definitely overpaid on books unfortunately, it's tough to hear other people have too As far as the lighting, I appreciate the kind words! A lot of trial and error went into it. If it helps, I have a light on either side of the camera at about a 45 degree angle pointed at me, so when I show a book, the light isn't right in front of the book, so it tends to reduce the glare. I found having one light though was too dark, so one on either side worked a lot better. I also have a light that is on the ground in front of me, so there's no reflection, but it illuminates the area directly in front of where I present the book with no glare. Hope that helps and best of luck with the lighting!

I'm literally guilty of every single thing you listed. Does Donald Duck even have a true first appearance in comic books? I could never find a definitive answer There's Four Color #4 which is his first appearance in an American Standard Comic Book, but that's a cover and the book are reprinted comic strips, and I think Four Color #9 was the first original story devoted to him. Then there are the appearances before that. The Oversized Comic you showed, that Yellow Linen Cover Book, Mickey Mouse Weekly which was his first original story, and finally there are even hard cover books before that.
@momoonocollects
@momoonocollects Ай бұрын
Yeah, it's hard to say. Four Color 4 is generally considered his first true appearance, but he's in so many books before that it's hard for me to agree with that A case can be made that his first appearance is in Adventures of Mickey Mouse 1 from 1931. It's got a duck named Donald in it, but he looks quite a bit different, kind of like a Donald prototype I don't think it's ever going to be definitive unfortunately

Hulk #181, Giant size X-men, Werewolf #32, 10 years of Spiderman etcetera As life happened and i moved around i lost more and more my collection. I'd grown out of comics. I noticed something really interesting on your ASM #3. What are those little plastic squares inside the slab, presumably between the front of the case and the inner well? I've never seen those before, and I think they're needed for ALL slabs, if they do what I suspect they do. And here's why. I still have yet to stop submitting my raw books to CGC, books I bought new, off the newsstand or at my old comic store, about 40 years ago. I recently got some books back, and the inner well in 3 of my 16 new slabs is NOTICEABLY warped. And not just the top/bottom edge...the worst of all edges to have warping, the LEFT edge. And this entirely distracting and noticeable "bowing" of the inner well appears to have induced spine tics on at least two of these books. These are "only" $100 books (graded value, both 9.8s), and they DID receive 9.8 grades, but there's no way I can ever sell these two books in good conscience as 9.8s. They're damaged, and they're NOT 9.8s by anyone except a blind man's standards. So...anyway...if those little squares were in there, they'd be able to keep that inner well from being able to bow considerably inside the case as there's quite a bit of play between the outer shell and the inner well. I dunno...I'm frustrated. I've yet to call them, because overall, my last submission of 16 books came back higher grades than predicted. But I've lost a LOT of confidence that the actual comics inside ARE INDEED 9.8s. Two of them aren't for sure. They're buckled right in the middle of the spine. Who knows, maybe after the books were graded, they moved to the next room where the slabbing assembly line is set up, and they dropped them. I see another few slabs with the inner well warping, and the spines are valiantly struggling in there to maintain their integrity (for now).
@momoonocollects
@momoonocollects Ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that, that's got to be incredibly frustrating. Even though your last submission was better than suspected, I'd still call them. The worst case scenario is they do nothing, best case is they reslab them for you or compensate you in some way. Up to you obviously, but it doesn't hurt to try That's crazy you picked up on those, you're the first one who's mentioned them! They're actually small adhesives because I put a UV protector over all my slabs, and those squares hold it in place. Hope that answers your question As far as solutions I know of about your issues, I do not. I've had that happen to one of my books, but that's it, so I haven't really looked into it myself. Maybe I should. If I find anything, I'll let you know. Have you found or explored any options in the marketplace?

@@momoonocollects Aha! So they're on the outside. Thank you for sharing your own experience. My question to you is, would you wait and try to buy a book you want (silver/bronze age DC grail) or would try scoop on a future grail aka UF4 or Edge of Spider Verse 2 on a good deal? You figure you can move those books for a profit but may end up like your Transformer #1. Market is down so lot of older book aren't necessary out due to a down market.
@momoonocollects
@momoonocollects Ай бұрын
You're welcome, thanks for watching and for the great question! I assume you would want the book in both scenarios? If so, if it's just me, I'd go with waiting to buy a silver or bronze age grail over a possible future grail because of scarcity. I think it will hold better value and is less of a risk because when another market downturn happens, the rare book will have less supply. And even though in that scenario there may well be less demand and the price may go down, it has lower downside risk as opposed to a book with a lot of supply and a decreasing demand. I hope that makes sense Also, depending on the silver or bronze age book you're wanting, I think you can snag a good deal on those books too, especially the bronze age. Is there a book you have in mind to go for?

Woulda shoulda coulda, but I digress. I have several missteps in my collecting history and of course they're all related to big missed value to our collections! 1. I could have bought Hulk 181 in high grade for $25 in 1984. 😅 2. I could have bought TMNT #1 two months after it came out for $40! 😅 3. And this is the big one and actually a big opportunity my parents didn't see. We lived near Salt Lake City in '85 and went into town during a holiday to shop and see the sights. My parents and my younger bro and sis went in one direction and I went into a comic shop. Short story but the owner finally showed me that he had Action Comics #1-5, all in mid grade! I literally almost fainted but asked how much he was selling them for. $5000 he said and I left to regroup with my parents and told them about what I saw and what a great deal it was. Well, they said they would think about it and maybe they would lend me the money or give it as a high school graduation present. They never did. I have brought it up every year to them since the year 2000 how expensive those books are and they kinda look to the side in a stare almost as to, "our son was a genius but we never knew". 😅

It's funny but everything you listed is all in our heads. As collectors we all go through those feelings and there just that feelings. What we pay for something and when really doesn't matter in the long run as long as the collector has the joy of owning it. The amount of Comics, Cards, Coins, Action Figures, Toys, that I have had come and go all had the accompany joy of the initial purchase. Then it fades and replaced by another. Eventually I might sell the collection or sometimes give it away, but it's always replaced by another. So it's all in our heads. Keep collecting and when we die the stuff just recycles into the market to give another collector that joy of buying a new piece.

@@momoonocollects the fact that you have a big budget, action figures might not be fun bc you can almost find everything you want in one day. There's no chase, only budget. Now it you want to try a collection that requires real rarity, budget and luck, then look into graded pre-war baseball cards. PSA only. Then you put your collection on the PSA registry and you get a ranking and compete. At one time I had 15 graded 1919 Cracker Jack cards. Each card was about $150 they were low grade. The 1930s has some awesome sets. Also if baseball is not your thing then the Non-sports cards. The 40s Superman set is famous. Comics tend to focus on Keys but Cards are about sets. Especially everything before 1942. With your budget you could complete full comic runs in one month but then it requires space and you just can't display it all. But trying to collect something that is reasonable priced but only comes along once in a while, then you have something special. I have a Napoleon Bonaparte card collection. it's 350 different cards from 1894 to present, Anytime they put him in a modern set I collect his 1/1s and stuff. Oh Disney has a card set from the 30s they are pretty rare also. Its 1930s Walt Disney Comics (but there cards) R161, 32 card set. There's only 2 complete sets on the registry. It was great talking to you will continue to watch your videos.

Nothing wrong with putting all the money you can afford! Into the biggest most expensive key you can obtain (in terms of an forever investment) as biggie said never get off your own supply. I have an Spidey #4 1st sandman and nm98 raw, everything else I buy is £5-£10 books purely for fun.

@@momoonocollects Yes I had a really high grade roughly 15 years ago, a pence issue (asm 4) I stupidly sold! Super super high grade, I was put off it was I am British I prefer (I prefer cents issues ha) and I've had tons of nm98's over the years and recently I just thought screw it I'll just stick both in my wardrobe & keep em this time and go back to my roots of picking up cheap copper keys for fun cba to invest after this. Both my high grade grails (respectively the limit of my budget) obviously everyone is different! Loving your GA Wonder Woman & your books/content mate. Yes both are great great reads, definitely worth reading if can get a true bilevers of each, if viable option for you, do you think nm98 will be a future ih181? I feel like it being 17 years newer has alot of scope to become one.

For sure, I'm planning on doing collection videos to show what I have. Mine's a 3rd print, but I've been looking to upgrade to 1st. I just haven't been able to personally justify picking one up yet because I keep seeing the prices on them slide Those are great books to go after and both are on my list, too! 😆 X-Men 1 seems to possibly be heating up a bit, I've been watching that one for a while

Nice 😆 I agree, comics in general aren't as rare as we think. I also think people fall into the trap of thinking that the CGC census count is the total amount of books out there (or at least the ballpark) And I agree, that condition, and in my opinion golden age, make books more rare, so I've tended to go after those more heavily over time

Never buy "big" books impulsively. If something hits my radar, I'll wait months, even a year before pulling the trigger. If it continues to be on my mind, and I find myself checking prices often, I'll consider it something I actually want. Even then, I wait until a convention, and try to find it in the wild so that I can negotiate it. The other aspect is that I don't technically "collect". I read comics, and the end result of buying them to read is a collection. Comics sealed in hard plastic cases do nothing for me. Those are just overpriced posters.

@@momoonocollects Yes. Many dealers will quickly change their mind if you walk away. Some will stop you as you try to go. Others, you need to come back to later in the day to see if they still have the book. The best day for deals is the last day, right before closing. Most dealers don't look forward to packing up what they haven't sold.
