Ask a 'collector', why do they have so many CGC'ed books. Bottom line, if a 'semi-guaranteed' grade of an issue is that important to you, you are an investor, no mater what you say or explain to others.

I got back into the Hobby 5 months ago after 34 years. I was huge into comic books as a kid and teen in the 60s, 70s and 80s but sold them off after my Son was born in 1990. I am having a blast buying favorite titles of the past as well as buying new releases. I do it though because I enjoy them, enjoy the collecting. I can see the difference in doing it for fun over doing it for investment/profit... I'll stick to fun!

Nice, never to late to do anything you enjoy. Have a similar, funny/strange story, I'll try to condense it/but its a long one. I diden't collect comics back in the 1990's, a buddie of mine (have long sense lost touch with him) but anyway, he invited me to go with him to a comic shop. I said nope, thats "lame" ; though he finally convinced me to go and i brought $100(thats not alot; but for me being young, and 100 was alot, i said heck with it, gona see what i can get) if your wondering one of the books was amazing spiderman #57 Ka-Zar, Good con and still have it , but have picked up a upgrade sence. THEN, I lost my collection! yep gone for over 15 years! after multiple house moves, and just lost intrest in comics in general, never seen any of them, (were talking about 20 books). Well turns out, i had put it in plastic tuperware box! WTH! and found it again 3 years ago to my astonishment in a random closet. Moral of the story? Never store books in things that don't look like comic book storage! well been collecting again for a few years and that was the catalyst to get me back into it. Anyway, enjoy your new/old hobbie, best of luck -Cheers

Frankly, anyone with an ounce of financial literacy (and is being honest with themselves) already knows that investing in comics is higher risk as an alternative asset class and should only be a small % of an individual’s overall investment portfolio (similar to real estate or crypto, e.g.). Most people would be better off (particularly in today’s market) putting their money in a S&P index fund than comics. Certain savvy comic investors can make money if their investing is done right. But I think for most ‘investors’, the rate of return on their comic collection is less important than the enjoyment of collecting (the nostalgic value) and being part of the comic community. At least it is for me.

He is correct. But many of us in this hobby tell others to collect what you like/love. I love the hunt out in the wild. My 8 yr old son loves to be with me when we do go looking together. I may not get rich off my collection, but if I leave it to him, he sure will. And I'm ok with that because we did it together and the time together is just as valuable to me.

Great video. A few things I would consider though. When it comes to utility, many other asset classes don't really have that much real utility either. Comics are not revenue generating investments, that's true. They are mostly speculation. However, while most stocks are far better as solid investments, very few of them multiply spectacularly, and they can also go down significantly or to nothing at all. Most stocks don't have great dividends. And even with something like the S&P 500, if you don't buy at the right time, you might have locked away your money for ten or twenty years before being able to get it put again avoiding a loss. Whereas even if comics go down in value, you still have them to enjoy. There is not much enjoyment to be had out of a stock that had tanked, unless it had as amazing dividend. Great key comics will also not go down to nothing the way way stocks can. Before anybody says "Eternals 1", that was never a great key comic haha The thing about getting a good return out of comics is that you gave to be really really really careful, disciplined, and know to sell them back into the market. Consider them as part of a larger investment strategy and that's perfectly okay. But do not think of them as your golden ticket to endless riches.
@PaulGomez790
@PaulGomez790 7 ай бұрын
I don't think I agree with him. He is buying the wrong comics to "invest" in. Yes, they are keys, but do they move? Who wants the first Riddler right now, or even if the char gets hot? Is it affordable to the average person? To me, he seems more like a collector than an investor. For my money, I'd have bought a few hundred copies of Ultimate Spiderman, week 1. OR.. crazy thought, how about key Deadpools/Dr.Doom/Wolverines/Xmen/Harley/Joker. But instead, he is talking about Wonder Woman's lasso??? Really??? It's obvious he has money, but is he really investing it correctly to make money?

momo definitely has some nice books,....hoper he shows some of his atomic gems next! during this drawback, many values have suffered, but a lot more of it seemed to be newer material as opposed to golden/atomic age books,.....why? golden age: much lower supply, true scarcity, esp. in grade. demand fueled by collectors who are buying the item because of love for the art and story..... newer age: large supply, demand fueled by speculators looking for quick profit oftentimes,... see the books as an item, may never read the story or look at the inside art, the times they are a changin'.........

Great vid sticky, and entertaining to boot. So the big question to ask concerning comic collecting is ; are you having fun? thats the big question for me. Another thing is hey, why not do both or many? ie; collect whatever you enjoy, maybe make some money here and there, and invest in the stock market, gold or whatever floats your boat. I myself have always loved to read, been collecting books seance i was a young pup, so starting a comic collection was easy, and a smooth process. O and how about that property tax perhaps? yes the list goes on and on and on. A house is a liability, until you sell it, then yes it can be profitable (!but dont forget to do the math with all the money/time=money you put in it over the years!), in the meantime (ill use stock market terminology/your" just holding a bag" /a bag holder)- hey kinda reminds me of comic books lol 🤣 That being said , I myself own property (a condo). Do what makes you happy, in the end. Best of luck with your house and maybe your collection? anyway don't mean to be a Debbie downer or anything, lets just "keep it real" see what im saying? @@JCtheComicGeek Yep, i would never condone renting, I figure the part i'm getting at is the scale of it. I hear from alot of large house owners, "you dont own the house, it owns you" or "you become the home" ie; anytime a friend is talking to you its;, "just repaired the pipes in the front lawn", "new roof time", bathroom remodel, etc all that money, it can add up to become a monster. I realized in the last couple months that I would like to be a comic book collector and have great stabbed keys and what not but I just can't justify that reality. I have about 50 slabs and I'm getting rid of all of them soon. I enjoy reading books and lately have been buying the collected editions of titles and have really been enjoying that. At one time I thought I could possibly put together a full FF run. Uh huh. I'll buy the epic collections or check them out from my library which has about 500 trades and manga and is ever growing. It's been a great source for reading material and free. Not sure how many libraries have these types of books but they should consider getting some in my opinion. Gets me through the door.

All reasonable points for discussion, but like any investment you would just factor those additional costs and other variables into your buying price point. I am a financial advisor and a comic books collector. Comics are not an investment. They are a speculative alternative asset class. I love comics and I don’t want to sell my personal books, but….their growth does not compound. If you invest in the stock market indices, your interest and dividends alone will likely give you enough income to buy expensive comics almost without end. I'm clearing about 30%-40% on graded books after "seller fees", that's a good amount of return in relation to the stock market of about 8%-15% yearly. A good sum of his presentation is actually incorrect or very much not fully informed. Collecting comics "shouldn't" be about money? Well, at some point you're going to have to plan an "exit" strategy as you and I don't live forever. You're going to throw them in trash or leave the burden on your heirs to make the decision for you? Yes, there is always going to be a financial attachment to comics. Even storage is invaluable as well.

@Jerry11011 7 ай бұрын
Let me count the ways on this person.. oh boy. First, I'd recommend he see a stylist on the hair game. He needs to do a better job on understanding the topic he is discussing. An investment doesn't have to give revenue to be an "investment" as comics are relatable to a "growth" stock. He's referring to dividends and other "cash cows" in a weak attempt to compare comics with other income producing vehicles. The reference to BONDS, they do not have a highly traded market. His reference to "utility", oh boy. I can have a Van Gogh painting and it serves minimal "utility", but nonetheless it will hold a good amount of value, just like comics. So he's gonna complain on "seller fees"? Never mind "Capital Gains" taxes on the other vehicles he's trying to compare to. Wealth accumulation is ALWAYS going to have sunk costs and overhead in that path no matter now you look at it. Yes, I have a degree in this field and passed the Series 7 and Series 66. His knowledge is "casual" at best.

You have capital gains tax on both traditional investments, such as stocks, and on comic books. Of course, your underlying suggestion is not reporting gains on comic sales, but that is tax fraud. And regarding seller fees -- let's take Heritage Auctions as an example. They charge 10% seller commission on the hammer price plus nearly 20% buyer's premium, which is nothing more than a disguised additional seller fee. Comparatively, online stock trade fees are nil. And comparing a one-of-a-kind Van Gogh fine art painting to comic books? Come on! Finally, you just had to insult his appearance, didn't you Jerry? That of course has no relevance to anything and is nothing more than elementary school playground behavior.
@Jerry11011
@Jerry11011 7 ай бұрын
@@spinnerrackstudios Heritage is just ONE outlet and you don’t even have to use them. I disagree with buyer premium, but that’s a different discussion. Where did I say not claim capital gains on books? There’s obviously less of a paper trail in a comic you purchased years ago as opposed to a registered stock. Let’s be real. I don’t recall a Van Gogh making headlines for millions like an Action Comics within the last (6) weeks, so yes, that is a very comparable topic. You sound like a bad friend who wouldn’t fix their friend’s tie on their suit or wipe the dust off their jacket before standing in front of an audience.
