The way a true craftsman can be measured is not by the mistakes you may make, but rather how you accept them, get back to work, and correct them. As a person who has been in construction (carpenter) most of my adult life, I see a true craftsman in the making. You all are doing very, very, well. Solider on,....

Actually, Trent, it is the responsibility of the person doing the nailing to make sure the boards are on their mark. The person laying the boards down can't be sure they don't move. Allie's response was a lot better than you would have gotten on someone else's job site. I love your series.

i couldnt figure out a way to say this whilst still being nice so thank you for doing so! I love how you worded this while still being polite- something i struggle with obviously and didnt comment anything cause i didnt wanna start trouble! I felt like it was a bit arrogant the way it was said like "people when they start out do it like this" like he is an expert talking to someone that knows nothing! I really think she is a smart woman and knows what he is doing but doesnt call it out and is just super nice so lets it pass and focuses on the positives of him rather than the fact that he can be a bit condescending at times. :)

Allie and Trent, one thing I have learned, is to remind, that with things (like putting the x's on there), a discussion is needed, to relay what they mean. My husband has more difficulty, too, seeing what needs to be taught/shared. He is aware of this, and that is a great first step. Hang in there. As others have said, building a home is one of the biggest stresses on a marriage. Take a breath, and realize, fall and winter will come. I too hope that your home is enclosed before the tough weather starts. But, more importantly, really, your love and marriage came first, otherwise what would all this work have really been for?

On the first day of school each year I taught first grade I would ask, “How do we learn?” When the kids stared at me blankly, I would whisper, “By making mistakes.” Then I would ask again, “How do we learn?” This time as a few would say by making mistakes, I would say, “I can’t hear you!” I would continue this until all the kids were screaming at the absolute top of their lungs, “By making mistakes!” “Yes, by making mistakes. We learn by making mistakes. You will find that I even make mistakes.”

A couple of tips that you will likely never read... 1. Get a demo blade for your sawzall and whenever you need to redo work just cut the nails at the joints, adjust things, and send it. Prying out nails sucks. 2. This is framing. So long as things are square and desired spacing is achieved you are good-to go. Perfection is not required. Example. You could have cut out that king stud to mount the bracket and just added another one on the open side. Sure you'd spend some extra $$ on two additional studs, but you would save a butt-ton of time. No one is going to ding you for two extra studs in the wall or the extra 3in of beam/header length. Moral of the story siding goes on the outside, plaster or drywall on the inside, and what is in the middle just needs to be relatively square and strong.
@Well_possibly
@Well_possibly 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, cut the nails vs prying them out. Great tip. For tip 2, a construction worker said, framing (studs, walls, etc.) should be all three: square, plumb, and level.

Trent & Allie - hang in there, you can do this. Everyone does everything for the first time once. I had the title of controls engineer, but I had a background that included mechanical, piping, etc. I was heavily involved in project planning and management for many years, I was the on site guy that had to make it happen. The joke was, someone else made the commitment, and I was the one that had to pull the rabbit out of my backside. I had a reputation and track record for doing just that repeatedly. I told them that they were so used to me pulling out the rabbit, that they now expected me to pull out elephants. Bottom line: break large tasks into pieces, a list of bullet points that sequentially list all the steps to accomplish the major task. Then constantly go back are review the plan to refresh your memory and to make adjustments as needed. I told all of my team that you have to have a plan or you will get exactly what you planned for - nothing. No plan, no results. Plans need to be revised or confirmed on a regular basis, but you have to have a plan. Don't let the magnitude of your goal get into your head, focus on short term, a week, by the day, by the hour, etc. to keep your focus on the immediate need. Hang tough! Kevin is a great asset and Allie's sense of humor is also.

@@shopshop144 hey shop shop.. it's never to late. You cut 4 or 5 , 2foot piece of 2x4 , screw them to the green plywood at the second floor level at least. Make sure screwed sideways. Then double them up. Screw them really well 50 mph is not to be fool with. You then screw the brace to the 2x4s... mounted on the green plywood. No windows are needed. You keep the long 2x4 kickers up till the house is ready for sliding. I my self would brace the crap out of that wall. Even if it cost 500 bucks of wood you waist.. Also... the braces on the loss dirt side need to have a strong anchor. I would dig a hole and sink 5 feet of a tree that fell in those winds. Sink the 5 feet leave 1 foot above the ground. Back FILL it. Use my chain saw and square up the 1 foot above the ground. And screw the long 2x4s to it. And long lang bolts should be used in the green tree stump. I've built, 50k houses and all the way up to 35m dollars houses on cliffs in CALIFORNIA. And shot gun houses 15 of them a month. Coolest house I built was 20.000 square feet.

ABOUT YOUR VAN - FYI - in a recent episode of Leave Everything and Wander, (your Italian friends you met in South America) they updated us on their truck stuck in south American. they said you can get your vehicle permit "suspended" while in storage during the pandemic, and then the clock starts up again when you get it out of storage. Don't know what the paperwork is on this, but thought I'd pass it on since information is so hard to get.

Not quite... one side would have been moving "up the hill" and the fix would not be workable on that side. This did not need to happen. Time to pay a little less attention to camera angles and reaction shots and wildlife montages and a lot more to thinking things through. I am concerned that there was no metal T-shaped diagonal bracing installed. Hopefully, Kevin will be on site to supervise lifting the wall into place. This could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Chaps, I love what you do, your enthusiasm and confidence. Mistakes are seen as such only in retrospect when one thinks of how many things could have been done better - but that is no real gauge. The bottom line is that any time one is pushed into accelerating processes by the circumstances one is likely to cut one too many corners; what I am getting at is that one should not feel rushed - one needs to look at everything twice and then double check the results before acting. No sweat chaps, it will all work out. You have very good help at hand, probably seen about everything that can go wrong in building.

Trent and Allie, I have been enjoying your videos for several months now and I want to encourage you. The both of you are getting great experience to help others and the slight mistakes that happen along the way are just bumps you grow on. As my father would say when we were building (he was a professional carpenter), son, we're not building a watch! I am a contractor and yes, sometimes we nail up a wall and miss calculation and have to take it all apart and repair our mistake. At least we saw it before it became permanent. Here's what we do, we use a flat bar to open the 2x4's and use a saws-all with a diablo nail imbedded blade and cut it apart. By spreading the materials we do not damage anything and very quickly we can re-nail it. Finally Trent, you say you know nothing about this or this, fact is you are learning!
