@wild_goose_02852 жыл бұрын
I am a novice turkey hunter. I have not killed my first gobbler for the season is not open yet. However, I think another important detail worth recognizing is game trails. Like most animals turkeys do utilize game trails. And if you're in a spot, and a turkey is coming to you, you should do your best to create a mental map of known game trails. That way you might be able to predict the birds movements along trails. And ultimately, where he may pop out.

When you said the setup is the most important thing you do, I knew you were a turkey hunter. I tell new hunter, where you sit down is the biggest key to killing turkey's. I'll never forget that time two old geezers (who claimed to be seasoned turkey hunters) arrived half an hour after sun up and started responding to EVERY gobble, even going as far as to STAND UP in a field to call back, they couldn't sit still for two seconds. The worst part is we called the Tom to the edge of the bush, no more than 40 yards infront of us. These jokers ruined our closing day for what would've been a guaranteed turkey for us. It didn't help they were insufferable and accused us of hunting past legal hours, meanwhile they were party hunting (illegal).
@duncanpaisley52903 жыл бұрын
I'm new at turkey hunting and I'm a little confused about something. Dale, you said in your video that when you hear that gobble you need to move closer because that's what hens do in nature. The sits and waits for the hen to come to him. I've heard many people talk about calling and the Tom comes to them. So after calling and you hear that first gobble, what should you do next? Be quiet and watch and wait? Call a second time? Move closer and call? I still don't know what's the best next step. The guy I'm hunting with right now has been hunting turkey for years on his own property. We sit in a blind and call, Tom gobbles, we call again, Tom gobbles etc. After while the shuts up and we think he's on his way so we get quite and the next time we hear a gobble he's way off in the distance.
@kleomacdonald2 жыл бұрын
Turkey hunting is brand new here in New Brunswick Canada, I’ve been on 2 hunts and both times we did hen calls and the Tom came to us. The last hunt I called rod a buddy the ol Tom left 3 hens on a manure pile for the call I built. It was epic.

I tried a method I read about on a hung up bird. There were several birds (ended up being Jake's) hung up about 100 yards. We couldn't see them so I slowly moved closer and called. Then moved closer again and called. When I got as close as comfortable, I turned back and worked back to where I started and called. Before I knew it, all the jakes were at a full run coming at me. Have you ever tired this method with any success ?

If hens go to the gobblers like you said, why do gobblers often come to our calls? I've only killed one so maybe it's just my personal experience. When I gobbled at him I thought Mr. Bill was gonna come unglued, but to his own admission it was a brilliant move because that dude came screaming in as he finally noticed the full strut decoy> I did not want to lose him to the other bird, Bill shot him at 12 yards, wad hit it in the face

@Michael Williams i hunt a mix, i have a farmer friend with about 160 acres, and there is some OLAP land north of Oklahona city that i hunt on. Not too sure about going to a larger WMA or similar. I'm kind of new to this and don't really know the ropes of going out there. Bird density of farm is good [i think] at least half a dozen hens and probably 3-4 toms/jakes. On the OLAP land it's minimal to none. You can hear them but they're way far off, like 150-200 yards.

Here’s a trick I learned hunting Mississippi toms, unless u roosted one and know where to set up for that bird from night before you don’t need a decoy, most times if a tom sees ur decoy he will hang up and want ur hen to go to him, however, a jake or even a tom decoy will bring em in faster than a hen decoy more times than not

I call it run and gun first thing in the morning one on the roost and try to beat him before he pitches off. Its worked so well it seems too easy. Carrying one out with the sun just peaking over the horizon...and the other 50-75 percent of the time you run up on him in the tree, or never hear anything after one or two gobbles.

First mature bird I ever killed was sheer dumb luck. I overcalled and hung him up at 100 yards for an hour then he shut up. Gave up and went to the truck. Half hour later I cracked a Mountain Dew all pissed off and heard him gobbling his brains out right where I was set up. Snuck halfway to him chirped once and he came running. Best hunt I ever had with no real idea what I was doing🤣

matt, talking about not wanting to call as your walking towards a gobbler, have you ever done a situation in which you tried tricking a boss tom or a gobbler into thinking your another gobbler trying to steal his hens? like this kind of scenario - you locate a gobbler and he gobbles back. so you yelp a few more times then use a gobbler call right after that. so your doing hen yelps and maybe clucks and cuts and then also doing a gobble call afetr that, and make it sound like 2 turkey are talking to eachother would that maybe trick a gobbler into thinking another male has entered his territory and is trying to steal his hens? then he'd come to investigate? this would probably only work though if its the boss tom of the area? if it would work?
