Their song “Night Letters” is EXACTLY what you’re looking for in terms of contrast to this song to really show the depth of their discography. Good tempo/vibe changes and some absolutely killer riffs in a heavier almost prog-punk-hardcore I don’t even know what you’d call it lol. Also, for a bonus, it’s part of the small group of songs that Todd sings instead of Chris. And maybe as a bonus, you could do a double and throw in “Hadron Collision” which is just a like 1 minute ripper that borders on thrash lol.

Propagandhi's my all time favorite band. The bassist was John K. Samson (The Weakerthans) for their first 2 Albums, when they were a lot closer to one of those kinda goofy skatepunk-bands. When Todd came in for their 3rd album "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes", they became a lot more unique and technical in their style and sound and every follow-up is kind of a natural evolvement from it's predecessor. I think "Supporting Caste" is a fan favorite. I personally can not pick a favorite. It usually takes them 6-7 years to put out a new one, though. The singer and guitarist/main songwriter Chris Hannah is the most talented musician I can think of in that genre, and his lyrics are a poetic deep-dive into history and philosophy, requiring a lot of background knowledge to acurately interpret. Sorry...but I'm so enthusiastic about them. I'd recommend "Last will and testament" from supporting caste, which is a little different from their thrashier side with an incredibly melodic bassline, or "Purina hall of fame" from Today's empires, which is extremely straight forward.

But as other commentors have noted, Prop has just gotten better and better over the years. 'Less Talk, More Rock' is one of my favorite albums ever, and while 'Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes' was a new shift in sonic style with Todd in the mix, 'Potemkin City Limits' is when they found a new gear and through to 'Victory Lap' have just been on another level. Now I’m convinced he uses a pick the whole song, except for the little bass solo near the end. The couple times his right hand is shown, it looks like he’s picking, but when he’s playing with his fingers, during the (solo) you can see his pick in his mouth. Not sure why, but this became a mission for me because I wasn’t sure. Keep up the great work. These videos are fun!!

Their first couple of albums, “How to Clean Everything” and “Less Talk, More Rock”, in my opinion, were more straight punk, but you could hear the thrash and hardcore influences. When I first listened to “Todays Empire, Tomorrows Ashes” I really noticed the change in their sound. Much more hardcore and metal sounding. It’s like they became really serious, after the light- hearted first couple albums. “Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasil An” is the first track from “Todays empires, Tomorrows Ashes,” and it sets the tone for everything afterwards. The song Tertium Non Datur has the same kind of effect you spoke about on this one. The guitar chords have so much body and minor nuance that the bass can just go off. ~It’s like two coils of a dna helix, swirling, fighting for dominance over direction. Connected by the drums to stay on a forward path and give something life~

Yes! You made it to Propagandhi, welcome to the club. I'd suggest the song A Speculative Fiction next.

I been seeing Propagandhi for over 20 years. I grew up in Winnipeg there home town. Todd used picks alot in the beginning so he can probably play fast like punk/hardcore. Todd had a band called I Spy and he played guitar. He seems to use his fingers alot more with more recent stuff. This band is probably the most progressive punk band from the 90s!

Great bass tone you have. Very nice

That record hasn't left my car since 2017. (Yes, I still buy CDs.) They've been one of my favorite bands since ~1994. Chris is such an amazing guitarist (see: Dear Coach's Corner). I'm sure 2,000 people have already mentioned this, but an imagineer is a Disney employee.

Hell yeah! If you want something a bit longer you should check out their song tertium non datur

I just recommended the same song. I've also been suggesting Last Will & Testament on every one of these videos.

Man, love your breakdowns and reactions. This band is sonically very progressive, thrashy, to more skate/pop/punk sensibilities, but I think underappreciated. Adventures in zoochosis is just a really cool song with some dynamic changes Night letters, last testament, diplicate keys icaro, lotus gait, specupative fiction, fixed frequencies would all be super interesting to hear you react to!

YESSSSSSS PROPAGANDHI! Funny that this came out of the Protest the Hero video, Rody is a big Propagandhi fan. They're a kind of band that you can learn stuff from every song, being musically or political.

Regarding Night Letters… I see a lot of people asking for it, and it’s a great song, especially rhythmically, but I’m not sure it’s super interesting for bass note selection. It IS one of their heaviest songs, so you’d get that side of them. For bass you’d do better with Last Will & Testament or Unscripted Moments, IMO. That said, I did suggest imagineer, so what do I know.

The thing about propagandhi is that they can be so diverse from track to track. But the lead stated that Todays Empires was really the first album that he was truly proud of/felt was complete and cohesive, something along those lines. I personally dont vibe with the extra intricate almost rubato sounding stuff from the latest album, but Failed States (Note to Self & Lotus Gait especially) was where it worked well for me. And youre right about their unique treatment of vocals. So many of their songs (ex: Die Jugend Marshiert) read like prose lyrically, but when they put it on top of music, it can be mindblowing. Other great tracks include too many to count but personal faves that stand out to me are Night Letters, Purina Hall of Fame, Mate Ka Morik Ukun Rasik An, Speculative Fiction, Dear Coachs Corner, Iteration, Potemkin City Limits. They've always been a top 5 for me and I'm so happy when I see them getting their deserved respect.

Saw these guys at Coffman Union in Minneapolis around '95-'96....they all played completely naked and at the time it was the most shocking punk rock thing any of us could wrap our heads around. Absolutely one of the greatest punk bands of all time. How to Clean Everything is right up there with Punk in Drublic and Against the Grains for my favorite punk albums.

They are extremely particular of their sound and what goes on the albums. So it takes them a bit for new albums and it’s a great treat when they release. Plus they have families and lives that take priority, which is completely understandable.

Night letters is a good one if you want a contrast to this, it is heavy and in Drop C over E flat. It’s a great song showing of what they are capable of. This tuning is called the Todd tuning for the songs he writes. More catchy would be coaches corner or speculative fiction.

Had the chance to chat a lot with Todd after a show right after the release of Potemkin City Limit. Very friendly dude who's a huge music fan. I think we chatted for a good half hour just about music. The band have very broad influences and it shows throughout their career. Loved that you noticed the emphasis on the lyrics. Chris writes some incredible stuff that are still relevant 30 years after release and put a lot of thought on the music he writes to fit the emotions and the messages conveyed. If you ever want to do a react about a whole song instead of a bass song (not that there isn't anything interesting about the bass in it, but it isn't the biggest focus in it), I would immediately recommand Purina Hall of Fame. Suggestions : Lagwagon - Give it back Cigar - Legacy of the 7 plies (I'm sure that one is coming already like 88FL) Satanic Surfers - Soothing, Even if time stood still, Lost, Don't Fade Away or The Treaty and the Bridge Face to Face - Disconnected Here's one that nobody else will suggest, so it's pretty much a "just trust me, you won't regret it" suggestion : Oversight - Just a word
