Mighty Morphin Zyurangers gets very weird when Power Rangers decides to reuse the same monster across multiple seasons! From Dragon Caesar's grief to Zack's martial arts tournament and all the way to Lord Zedd kidnapping three future Power Rangers, this is literally a story through the ages! Who does it best? And who does it the absolute worst I've ever seen?

The Bat-Shit insanity of how MMPR Season 2 was created has always fascinated me. When you get to the six episodes filmed in Australia you wind up with an episode using footage from three different nations on three different landmasses shot across, like, four different years. It's a farce! Sakamoto Kou-ichi's directing and the actors' stunts really does save those episodes.

I enjoyed this episode. It was hilarious to see the hurdles Power Rangers had to go through in season 2 to trick us. I hope you consider dissecting VR Troopers. It had a lot of the same issues that Power Rangers did when they ran out of the source material for the first two shows.

Supposedly, Mr. Saban actually did want to go the route of the Japanese version and adapt Dairanger as a separate series with a new plot and new cast, but his advisors convinced him to keep the same costumes and characters from the first season for exactly the same reasons as stated in this video.

People sometimes talk about PR's immortality, that the show has naturally come to an end like 5 seperate times and continues to keep on trucking no matter what. Honestly I think the fact that this show didn't implode in a puff of logic at the changeover from season 1 to season 2 should be added onto that list, saved only by the fact that 90s kids were somehow IMPOSSIBLY unobservant a hundred times over

6:30 If you pivot the episode to be about Jason's KotW, there's a really obvious natural plot to go with: just have Tommy take a role as Jason's civilian backup. Then you let that lead into Tommy figuring out more of how he can still contribute to the group without his powers, taking on a role of "secret keeper" for them, and maybe even managing the civilian response to yet another disaster in the empty warehouse district.

In regards to "Birds of a Feather", I kind of wished it utilized something similar to the Season 2 episode "Missing Green" instead. The latter plot honestly feels more in line with the primary story beat of guilt and overcoming grief that Geki and Dragon Ceasar dealt with in Zyuranger. Plus it would've given them an excuse to bring back Tommy at least one more time before kicking him off the set to film the Cybertron pilot. I also have a few quick thoughts about "The Ninja Encounter" 3-parter. I completely agree that the inclusion of the Hatchasaurus stuff was entirely unnecessary. If you cut out all of those parts,, this easily could've been shortened to a two-episode story. But if it absolutely had to be three parts and it absolutely had to include another monster, I would've instead used the "Needlenose" cactus monster that would be used in the later "Wild West Rangers" two-parter. You know. Cactus. Flower. I figured those two would kind of sort of fit together thematically. As for the "Wild West Rangers", swap out "Needlenose" with the Mexican Birdcage monster from Dairanger that "Power Ranger" didn't use and have Tommy be the one to go back in time instead of Kimberly since they used the Tigerzord didn't participate in that Zord fight. Lastly, here's a hypothetical question. Assuming that we live in a perfect world in which the departure of Jason, Zack and Trini had never happened, do you think that the script for "The Ninja Encounter", or something similar to it, could've worked as a crossover with VR Troopers? Like if you just swap out Rocky, Adam and Aisha with the three protagonists of that show and the Hactchasaurus footage with footage of the Japanese villains from their show? The sets to both shows were literally right next door to each other and shared several crew members, writers and voice actors. I don't know. I think it could've had a chance at working. A little cross promotion never hurt anyone.

That's exactly why I love it as an anniversary season. It's faithful to the first two seasons of MMPR, a true return to the roots of the franchise not in how people remember it but how it actually was, and despite that it was still somehow more enjoyable than season 2 of Beast Morphers or Ninja Steel. I legit love Megaforce, both seasons. Dino Fury season 3 'bout to be our new MMPR season 3 and I'm all for it.

@Genya Kozlov Sure but at least with MMPR they were just getting started and had to adjust due to the cast change plus in the case of Megaforce, they had at least 2 seasons prior to-date in order to get things ready for the anniversary but failed. God this video is just an absolute DELIGHT. I'd been looking forward to "Live Again, Zyusouken" VS. "Birds of a Feather" for a LONG time, because it's one of the earliest examples I can remember encountering of a "ZyuRanger" episode REALLY blowing its MMPR adaptation out of the water for me (like Fusion, I was a big fan of "Birds" as a kid because it focused so much on the Giant Monsters and Robots, one of my favorite elements of the series...and then I found out there was a version with all that Great Stuff that ALSO had an Actual Story attached to it!)...and THEN it turns out that we ALSO get a BONUS match-up wherein Fusion is flummoxed by the faulty fix-ups foisted on our Ranger friends? I absolutely did not expect Hatchosaurus' Season 2 appearance (oh, incidentally, the reason it's Hatchosaurus, of ALL monsters, that gets brought back in "Ninja Encounter" is all but surely because the Dora Antaeus suit was, to my understanding, the only remaining "ZyuRanger" Monster of the Day costume that was still usable) to be taken into account, but ooooh the fun we get to have because it is! Poor Fusion's increasingly-harried reactions to "Ninja Encounter"'s sloppy thrown-together mess of a non-story just gets funnier and funnier the longer it goes on (the *noise* he makes at 21:20 is maybe the single funniest thing in the entirety of MMZR to date), the closing "Billy Madison" reference is brilliant, I even love the adorably clever title! Some thoughts of my own, since we're here: * Let's all take a moment to appreciate that "Power Rangers" has Zordon just bald-facedly assert that Hatchosaurus is a "bird-like monster" based seemingly ENTIRELY on the fact that it has a beak; the name likewise seems to want us to take the rocky outcroppings around the shoulders as a kind of broken egg shell, but that could just as easily be a trait of Reptiles, which the design sure seems much more meant to evoke. * Yes, the two plot threads in "Birds of a Feather"-Zack mentoring Cameron for the tournament, the Rangers having to defeat the Hatchosaurus-end up having nothing to do with each other. And that's *weird*, because it sure feels like they were *meant* to. Like...the title encourages us to think of Partnerships, right? Likewise, "Power Rangers" *goes out of its way* to make the relationship between Hatchosaurus and Cardiotron into a symbiotic partnership where, in "ZyuRanger", no such relationship exists. And even as "Power Rangers" strips out its emotional context, the nature of the footage makes it unavoidable that we think about the partnership between DragonZord and the Rangers. All OVER the place, the theme of partnership is unmistakably present...and also completely MEANINGLESS, because the episode does nothing with it! Fusion points to the idea of having Jason as Cameron's teacher to unify the stories a bit better, but I have an IMO even MORE obvious solution: have Zack's mentorship of Cameron be what clues the Rangers in on the fact that Hatchosaurus has a partner! It's genuinely shocking to me the episode doesn't go that route in favor of having Zordon explain it all. Again. Twice in a friggin' row. * Normally, I'm more sympathetic to "Power Rangers" not adapting Story Elements from "ZyuRanger" that it can't use, and you would think that would apply in this case too; their DragonZord isn't a living creature, their Green Ranger isn't dead. But in no small part because the story they came up with to replace those elements this time around is so hollow and weak, I find myself a lot less willing to cut them that slack here. Tommy may not be dead, but he IS gone; even though the show never explains WHY he's gone, we are unmistakably meant to view the loss of his powers as something Tragic and Significant. It would make all the sense in the world to do a "Power Rangers" episode dealing with the emotional fallout of that event very much like "Live Again, Zyusouken!" does; indeed, they would in fact DO that exact story in season 2! They don't here, but it feels less like it's out of Necessity and more out of Cowardice, which doesn't leave me very favorably disposed to it. Even the DragonZord thing feels like they could have worked with it if they wanted to; not only do we in fact now HAVE a Zord present that appears to have some kind of mind of its own in the form of Titanus, but the truth is that the inherent nature of the Dragon Caesar footage from "ZyuRanger" means DragonZord has always been portrayed as a more independent entity than the other Zords, not piloted but rather guided by the music of the Dragon Flute, with Tommy treating it much more like his Partner (there's that word again) and Friend than the other Rangers do with their Zords. They might not have wanted to go with DragonZord literally mourning, but hey, maybe Jason is struggling to control it with the Flute? Maybe that's why Rita's only able to put a spell on it now? Again, this just all feels SO obvious to me.
@MistareFusion

Loved reading all of that. Thanks for sharing it with me! I do wonder about the Hatchasaurus choice. I did see something to the effect that, when it was auctioned off in the 21st century, it was the only surviving MMPR monster costume. Don't know if that's true or not. But it's odd for this scenario because it seems unlikely they would have had it from season 1. There is no original Hatchasaurus footage in "Birds of a Feather." Incidentally, not that it would matter for costuming, the monster only exists in a large form. So the Hatchasaurus in season 2 is using a costume MMPR never would have had to have used before. And it's being used in a context (human-sized fights) that it was also never used for before. So did they just happen to have it in their collection despite never having previous used it, or did they make/acquire this costume solely for "The Ninja Encounter"?
@masofdas6475
@masofdas6475 Жыл бұрын
@@MistareFusion Sorry for the delay on my reply, work's been real busy for me this week, but! I don't have any concrete proof of this, to be sure! The evidence I DO have is all pretty much circumstantial, especially given how much "The Ninja Encounter" is stuffed to the gills with weird-ass stuff which apparently serves no other purpose but to fill time (i.e. Jetting XD; ). But consider that, as you say, the use of the Hatchasaurus here really isn't especially intuitive; it didn't talk before (and when it talks here they don't even bother giving it Cardiatron's voice to at least pretend at some kind of consistency), it was never engaged in Ground Level fights before...obviously, the key motive here is to get A Lot Of Giant Monster stock footage for the Zord Fights, but if that was all they needed, they had their bevy of Zyu2 monsters to call on, which they both had done a lot already prior to this point and would do again a few times more over the course of Season 2 (most notoriously "The Wedding", which is only SLIGHTLY less of a cobbled-together nightmare than "The Ninja Encounter"). I feel like they wanted an original "ZyuRanger" monster specifically since, as you say, it had been a little while since audiences had seen any of them...and I likewise feel like if they had another option on that front, they probably would have taken it, especially since we know they DID have access to several other "ZyuRanger" MotD costumes (most notably Dora Circe/Pudgy Pig, around whom they even built the very first entirely-American-made episode of "Power Rangers" around) back in Season 1. In other words? It just feels a bit too much of a coincidence to me that, from what we know, the Dora Antaeus suit was the last "ZyuRanger" MotD costume still in working condition, AND that Hatchasaurus randomly comes back for this episode, and I strongly suspect the one informs the other. But a.) again, that's all very speculative on my part, so "all but certainly" was prolly too strong a term XD and b.) it's also possible that, even IF they're connected, it's the other way around, that the costume is the last one because it was used in this episode and thus needed to be refurbished/preserved where the others didn't.

Nowadays in 2023, I just laugh at the whole peace conference ”arc”, and think “ WOW! They ACTUALLY thought people wouldn’t notice three principal actors just being absent from the cast. Haim Saban, you ARE a fascinating man.” XD Say what you want about how the old S1 characters were written off or the replacements themselves, but I think everyone can unanimously agree this shouldn’t have lasted eight episodes, maybe 4 to 5 at most. If you want a better sendoff and introduction for all NINE of these characters involved without all the soulless replacing of OG MMPR’s production then read the boom studio comics. They give every character far better dimensions then S2 as a whole ever did. And all you Trini and Zack fans that felt gypped after S2 because they didn’t come back to any future seasons in the OG Zordon era, don’t worry they got good character growth too. XD

I feel like "Missing Green" from S2 was everything that "Birds of a Feather" should have been. Jason blaming himself for not getting the green candle and having doubts about his role as a leader. This episode could have worked like this: We start the episode with the rangers fighting the monster. It comes back to life and we split up the fight footage so that we can have the Rangers retreat. Jason blames himself for not destroying the monster. He quits but runs into to Tommy who talks to him about the green candle. He then trains Jason in using the dragon dagger. The rangers return to battle and discover Cardiotron. Jason regains self confidence and battles it

I also remember being so pumped when they brought back Hatchasaurus the following season, as I never picked up on the fact that they were using reverse angles and splicing fights from completely different sources together lol It took me SO damn long to realize that haha I also enjoy the Zyuranger episode, as it made the most random part of the PR episode, Rita's spell on the Dragonzord, carry weight. I often wonder if season one could work as a serialized story, but since I wouldn't have killed off Tommy, I'm not sure how you'd handle the Green Candle or this episode.

I used to watch a show called Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. I swear they had two episodes that used the exact same plots (in a show with an episode length that they artificially extended). One of the characters was rendered inoperable most of the episode through contrivance. (Same character). When fighting the same monster of the week, the character (while immobilized) could tell the monster’s weakness but their contrivance prevented them from saying it out loud. In both cases the same (other) character is able to read between the lines and implement the exact same strategy to defeat the monster.

You are absolutely correct. The first episode had the guy you're talking about (Tank I believe he was called), be put out of action by food poisoning making him sick. The second time it was a gadget messing with his mind making him a simpleton. The action scenes where the exact same used in the previous episode, including Servo (the protagonist) getting caught in manacles, getting sprayed with poison gas by the monster, and one of the support heroes using an "endless loop" missile to stop the monster from releasing the gas.

14:48 With Saban's other Tokusatsu adaptation Beetle Borgs, they actually did change the costumes because they were adapting a different Metal Heroes show. And, after 3 seasons of MMPR, they did just decide to update the suits every year. It's actually not that different from Super Sentai: the original Himitsu Sentai Gorenger ran from 1975 to 1977. It wasn't until Battle Fever J that they started doing the new show every year formula. It also wasn't until Denshi Sentai Denziman that they kept the something sentai something name formula.

Or even just drop the kid entirely and focus on Jason feeling guilty over Tommy having to leave the team. It's actually something they would eventually revisit in the next season when Tommy lost his powers a second time. The fact they fact they didn't do so here where it would have been most relevant is just so inane. Then again, I'm still not entirely sure why Saban ever had Tommy lose his powers at all, they'd almost burned through all of ZyuRange by this point anyway and had already commissioned Toei to produce more footage for exclusive use in Power Rangers. They could have just ordered all of that footage to include the Green Ranger from the start and ignored the entire arc with his absence. Although the really strange part is that none of the new footage without the Green Ranger features Red using the Dragon powers either. Honestly, before I learned about "Zyu2" I'd always just assumed the reason for that was it was all pre Green Ranger footage they had previously skipped to rush the character into the show. Knowing it was all made after just seems like such a bizarre oversight.

@@EmeralBookwise It was a fun change of pace to have Black Ranger wear the dragon mantle once, but yeah, I don't get why they still felt the need to hold back on Green Ranger then either. Was there already an expectation of Saban doing some "Tommy struggles to get his powers back all the way" arc?

Saw in some other comments you said you don't think season 2 generally suits this episode-by-episode format as it's so divergent from the source material--any plans to do other seasons that match up in a similar way to this (I personally think the way Megaranger compares to PR In Space is really interesting, the individual episode plots are sometimes beat for beat the same but set in a context and overall story that couldn't be more wildly different, which totally changes how they read)? Or past that point do you feel it doesn't have the nostalgia attachment factor for you/potential viewers?

With the Zyu2 episodes having been ordered by saban, I don't understand why they never had more episodes with Jason using the dragonshield, dragon dagger, and Dragonzord. Why not have a battle where he is alone and has to fight using both Dragonzord and tyrannosaur instead of nothing but megazord. Why not have megadragonzord be the mode that defeats the liongoat monster. Why not a Dragonzord in battle mode battle? Some of the Zyu2 episodes I thought were pre green ranger episodes as that is how they feel and act. After watching Dairanger, I seriously do not understand why they used so little zords footage and monsters. There were more footage for ultrazord, more megatigerzord fights, instead they just took fights from Zyu2 and zyuranger and made them boring and lame. One of the ironic parts is they referenced The cardiatron needing to be destroyed but they don't actually do it the way it had been done in the original episode. Now apparently cardiaTron can just be destroyed from a normal finisher unlike it was in season 1.

I agree. Keeping the suits was definitely the right call. With all the revenue they made, they weren't hurting for money on all that extra American footage they needed to shoot. The American footage also helped with better stories and plots in seasons 2 and 3.

In theory the American suit footage was a good idea but in practice they didn't really understand how to make it work until far too late. The US suits looked awkward and they failed to grasp the differences in body actor movements and Sentai filming style. Saban didn't really perfect it until somewhere around In Space-Time Force in my opinion. I wish they had just paid for more Zyu2 (Zyu3?) footage from Japan wih the Dairanger monsters but if they were too cheap to keep their US cast they weren't going to bother doing that.

Honestly if they had changed the suits I would have stopped watching, it was a big enough of a downgrade from the zords in design despite it supposedly being an upgrade. But the daiaranger suits just look goofy to me, The white ranger is the exception to that and it looks awesome but if everyone else switched to those in season 2, let alone if a new cast had those I'd have stopped. They didn't really start doing the new Rangers new cast thing until Lost Galaxy at which point they had earned the ability to do that I guess but little kid me was already sour about losing the dinosaurs and the ranger with my name and my favorite color losing his powers again, that would have been a dagger to the heart

The fact that Netflix only has Power Rangers and none of the Japanese version of the Super Sentai series to give context to the footage this episode was going for hurts much more. No Streaming Site to watch the Japanese original leaving those who were lucky enough to own the DVDs from Shout Factory the ability to see what this episode was really all about. It only makes sense that if you are a fan of Power Rangers, you really need to at least see Zyuranger series to fully understand and appreciate what the original season of Power Rangers had to work around with.
