HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the new baby! We're expecting our 1st child this December 👶 I was a pretty early adopter of MiSTer project and absolutely love it. I have to agree that everything has become redundant to the MiSTer. I do not use my raspberry pi, analog systems, my minis, or even the original hardware on my CRT. I love how pixel perfect and vibrant MiSTer makes my games on my flat-screen. I use original controllers with each console and it feels perfect. Can't say enough about the MiSTer project and it's an investment you'll never be disappointed in. Thanks for all your content over the years. 🍻 here's to the new baby and many awesome years ahead!

I got me a Mister about a year ago, and since then I almost stopped playing games on anything else. Granted, I was a bit of a retro gamer long before Mister, but for me it used to be 50% of emulation (I mainly used Retroarch and DosBox on my PC with a CRT monitor) and 50% modern games. And now it's 90% Mister on a CRT TV and occasionally I play some modern indie games (and still a bit of DosBox) on my PC. So Mister was the best thing that happened to me since... idk, since I bought my first PC in 1994.

I can't gush about the MiSTer project enough. Its so versatile... it eliminates the need for some very expensive tools that would make retro gaming more palatable and the just keeps getting better every week by updating cores and adding new ones. I think the most intimidating thing about the MiSTer is the price point, and I think when people see what a full MiSTer setup costs (Upwards of $550)... they feel priced out of the market. What I wish more people would understand is... you can do so much with just the DE-10 Nano which is the heart of the MiSTer. All of the add-ons only expand what the MiSTer can do, or make it look prettier. Plus, the add-ons people gravitate tend to be the most "Cadillac options" (like, you can use any $10 USB hub, and not the $55 one that the DE-10 nano stacks nicely on top of that seems to be the popular choice). Now the question is... does $220 price you out of the market? If so, there are tons of less expensive paths to retro gaming which are completely legit that might already be at your disposal or could certainly not blow your budget out of the water. A MiSTer DE-10 Nano by itself can do any 8 bit, most 16 bit console generations (including handhelds) as well as dozens of computer and arcade cores. A MiSTer can save you money from needing to buy an OSSC or RetroTink to handle upscaling to modern HD TV's as it's all built in. A MiSTer can load roms eliminating the need for expensive EverDrives, ODE's (optical drive emulators) and Rom carts... some that have very expensive FPGA chips in them (Super SSD3, FXPak, NeoSD) or require soldering skills to install. MiSTer's use USB as a primary input which can not only play any Bluetooth, 2.4ghz low latency wireless controllers, but can also leverage a serial interface to play OEM console gamepads (SNAC). A MiSTer is easy to setup (Far easier than say a HyperSpin PC build or RetroArch based Pi build) only it's less flashy (doesn't have marquees, flashy gameplay clips... exc). A MiSTer updates with a script, pulling in new cores, core updates and can be done wirelessly with a $8 USB network USB stick. A MiSTer can support multiple storage devices from MicroSD or USB attached hard drives... both mechanical and solid state. If you are someone who loves to play retro games that require twitch muscle memory to overcome like Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Punch out!!... or play rhythm games that require precise input... Someone who doesn't have any scruples about playing ROMs instead of physical media (I dunno, maybe you own(ed) all these games and just don't own the consoles to play them) and don't require to be on the bleeding edge of emulation (Dreamcast and up)... the MiSTer is a solid investment worth considering or at least shouldn't be overlooked. Game however you like at the end of the day, what is important to me might not be important to you on what you want to accomplish... but knowing what MiSTer offers, and dispelling a little on what a setup can cost you to start is all I hope to accomplish in this long as post to people that might not otherwise know. Remember... DE-10 Nano is a platform and you can build on it, and it grows through the development through a very enthusiastic and passionate community that want to preserve the games we all loved as kids... who work tirelessly to make the experience a little better every day.

I got a MiSTer a couple of years ago and love it - the constant updates make it ideal for a retro tinkerer like me. I just recently got a MISTerCade and spent the weekend installing it in my cab (formerly a Groovymame-driven setup) and the fidelity of the games, as well as the 'instant' on/off, get my Retro juices flowing! However, the inability to rotate vertical games means that I'll keep the Groovymame PC and the JPac in place for a while longer...
@ScarletSprites2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s nice to have a variety of options. My understanding is that the rotation could be implemented into the cores but it would be for a niche group of people and it would introduce lag. Certainly not a coder, but that’s what I’ve heard a few times.

Love this post!!!! I am 100% with you on this one. I own the original hardwares, emulation boxes, clone consoles, etc.... but the MiSTer FPGA changed everything for me, and this entire family. Now the family has an accurate way to discover new games across many many systems and enjoy them as they were intended. 1 little box that sits quietly under the TV. (well mine lights up lights a freaking xmas tree when I turn mine on, lol)... For me the best part was the ease of getting into micro computers like the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and Commodore 64. There are many more to check out.. but the ultimate best part about the MiSTer has been development of new games! I personally used the MiSTer to help develop "The Shadows of Sergoth" for Amiga, "Alwa's Awakening" on NES, and currently working on a Commodore 64 game "Knights and Slimes" with Monte Boyd. As a development system it is phenomenal! Keep up the awesome videos my friend, you are one of the main reasons why I have a MiSTer today, just like someone else helped you get into it :) Cheers and thank you! Hi great video, you might want to edit the section about the Saturn core being available, technically it is, but it is an alpha release and MiSTer users will need to be well versed in MiSTer operations to get it to work, it is still very broken and it is not publicly available via the standard update_all script. The PlayStation core is a public released core, has superceded it's beta release and download_all installs it. Big difference between the position of the PlayStation and Saturn cores. I just think it is import to inform you of this, just incase some Saturn fans jump in for that reason, they would not be able to install it easily as the MiSTer has a big learning curve for new comers to adjust to and it is very broken still. Thanks again for your MiSTer exposure piece, I have been on the scene myself since late 2018 and have seen a very complex system with limited cores grow into an amazing piece of user friendly hardware that basically shelves all other hardware types. Much love and peace ❤️💚💙🇦🇺🇺🇦😃👍

The Mister is also changed what PCB boards I buy. Now I just focus on ones that can't be run on it (Raiden fighters, Naomi stuff, etc)
@ScarletSprites2 жыл бұрын
You know the Pi4 paired with RGBPi isn’t a terrible option for Naomi. It’s also a hell of a lot less clutter and wires than going legit. I still need to fool with it some more but I like the RGBPi for stuff that isn’t on MiSTer yet.
@Evercade_Effect2 жыл бұрын
For me I still need the curation and physical carts. For me Evercade is working out. I still think Mister is a great option and happy it's working out for you. Maybe some day I'll take the plunge but I'm afraid I would spend more time tinkering with it than playing games
@ScarletSprites2 жыл бұрын
While there are still a lot of options in the settings I don’t find myself messing with it the way I used to fool with Raspberry Pi. Maybe because the UI is fixed and you don’t feel the need to constantly scrape and complete things. Regardless, it’s been a blessing for my ocd on that front as well.

That was one of my holdups as well; I was kind of an original hardware purist. Once I started using MiSTer though and I realized I wasn’t missing out? And my life was easier? No going back. (ok, that HDMI modded top loader is sweet and I have a soft spot for it still)

Quick question on the MiSTercade. Can you run a controller from it to play the console cores while it is plugged into a candy cab?

You can. The MiSTerCade has options for usb and snac.

The MiSTerCade is an addon board that allows it to drop into a Jamma wired cabinet. It’s pretty slick.

As much as I want a MiSTer it's too expensive for what it is. At the same time, as a retro gamer, I feel you cannot beat playing a game on original hardware on a crt. The MiSTer may come close but will never be as good.
@ScarletSprites2 жыл бұрын
I kind of feel that way with regards to arcade machines; if I’m restoring a relic I want it to be running original internals. CRTs are a must for a cabinet. As far as consoles go I’ve become far more lax. Most of my original stuff is boxed and I’m fine rolling MiSTer cores when I want to play consoles. All personal preference based on what you value.
