This is a 'Juwel 34' Stove, made by 'Gustav Barthel' in Germany, Dresden, in around 1950. The Juwel 34 was the 'sports cooker' in its time, because it was small and fast to use.
I purchased this stove online for around 20$.
The lettering:
It disappeared after painting it with the hammerpaint, but it will reappear after 4-5 times of using. The paint gets a little soft when hot and fades down the sides of the stove. Thats why the original green paint had a faded structure.
The color:
These stoves were painted originally, but always in the same color with the housing. So I didnt paint the housing silver again.

I have a stove that looks very similar made in Sweden, Svea 123 all brass. I bought new back in 1971, I think I'll get it out and fire it up just to hear it roar. It was a comforting sound on some cold Adirondack winter camp outs.

Great restoration, I particularly liked the vinegar bath. I believe the top and bottom plates are supposed to be pans / pots for the stove. Although they were painted prior to the restoration. It makes more sense for a space / weight savings for camping that the pan is incorporated into the design.

Enjoyed the video. Reminded me of my Svea 123. As you know stoves like this sputter or purr. First time the Svea was used, my friend said we should name it motorboat because it sounds like a motorboat. From then on it was “Motorboat”. It became part of the group. The question was never, “Are you bringing your stove?” But, “Is Motorboat coming?”

The Boy Scout troop I joined in the 90s still had about a dozen brass Optimus camp stoves in their gear inventory (at the time we were using 90s era Coleman Peak1s) They decided to sell them off and we all took one home to hand polish before they were sold. Wish I'd have though to buy one for myself.

Dude. I literally like three or four days ago got one of these; like EXACTLY THE SAME, condition and all. And was like ok this thing is super cool but how on the world am I going to get it working? It was in trailer of stuff that was going to the dump and I was like this thing is way too cool to have it lost forever. Thank you so much for posting this video before I had a chance to let it get lost; as of now it is within arms distance of me.

These were the standard equipment of the east Germanys army until the reunion of Germany. After 1989 they were still produced and sold as camping stoves. I bought mine in 1990 or '91. Correct starting is described in a comment below, fill the indent with gasoline and light it to heat up the tube. Makes quite a noise when running. The biggest advantage is, it is running with gasoline. As long as you filled up your bike, you can always cook a meal 😉

By the way, the lip at the base of the main jet was for squirting a bit of fuel in there and lighting it to warm the system up in very cold mountaineering applications. All cold war era mountain climbers in Kazakhstan from the COMECON countries had this little contraption from Dresden on their expeditions . Works well if you don´t have access to Butane cartridges or dry wood etc. like in Iceland for instance. Got one too but my son prefers the pocket versions which are driven by Butane cartridges on his hikes.

Another superb job. I do not know where you find your "patients", but they all need the care of Doctor Patina. Also, hydrogen peroxide can sometimes remove rust stains from fabric. But a very heavy rust stain may need a solvent containing lactic and gluconic acids. There is such a product in the USA "CLR Calcium, Lime, & Rust Remover" - I would think there must be a similar product available in Europe and Canada.

@@rs232killer It really is a well built stove! wow, 1980s. Not sure how old mine is. A little “life hack” that I discovered is using one strand of bike cable wire as a picking tool to clear out the occasional clogged nozzle on the stove. Works well and costs nothing.

@@nathans1978 I think they are almost identical though I have not held one of the old ones. The later model has a built in nozzle cleaning needle, just turn the valve all the way counterclockwise and the needle pokes up through the nozzle to clean it.

Nice and insightful job on a classic old stove. I can imagine some old tweed clad hikers way up in the Alps, crouching around that, trying to warm up. Loved the little funnel. For awhile on long trips we used an old pump-pressured stove for dozens of simple tasty dinners. It was meant to have only real camp-fuel. After a few tests, we switched to the same high octane gas our old Kawasakis used. The stainless steel grid where the sauce pans sat would get glowing red from the crazy hot flame. BTW; do not try this at home. It got WAY to hot. Thanks and good luck.

The predecessor was the pre-war Juwel 33.This Stove was made at least until the end of 1989. I had one that was sold on November 10th, 1989. This one is newer than claimed: The pot stands are from sheet metal and control shaft is rectangular to the burner. Erarly models had wire pot stands and the control shaft was angled a bit downwards.

Mine has to be somewhere in my camping gear. Served me well during several camping vacations in the 80‘s. Btw: this was build in the GDR untill the collapse of the iron curtain. The lighting works a Little Differenz than you did it: there‘s a small indent round the tube on top of the gasoline Container. You have to fill this indent with gasoline and lighten it. So the gasoline in the container is getting hot and it becomes a gas. Then you ignite the stove
