the mists of avalon is a book series by marion zimmer bradley! the deck actually seems to have some references to the books, which i love. it looks great, and the arthurian legend is so filled with magic it seems appropriate there is an oracle with its imagery and energy.

I’ve seen other deck’s backs that look almost exactly if not exactly like these. 👀 The Mists of Avalon is probably my all-time favorite novel. The picture on the box closely resembles the book cover so I thought it was based on the story. The Merlin in the book wasn’t named Merlin, but Taliesin. The Merlin is a title, a position of high regard and honor, like a Bishop. A lot of ppl think “Camelot is Camelot” but this novel is nothing like the traditional male-dominated versions we are most familiar with. Women especially who are interested in the myth of Camelot should read it; the story is told completely by the perspectives of the women; in fact, King Arthur has a supporting role but isn’t the hero. It was such an amazingly wonderful book that in my mind it’s the “true” account of the story- which isn’t possible bc there can be no “one way” to tell myths. Once I learned about the scandal about husband of Marion Zimmer Bradley (the author) and the trauma his powerless victims went through, and how MZB was basically complicit to it, I haven’t read it since. I do want to read it again though. When I discovered I was a Witch in 1988 at the age of 16, this book was instrumental in bringing me into the world of magic, and especially the witchcraft tradition in which I was “raised”. I read it annually and each time felt more renewed as a Pagan. About the price- determining the value of decks by number of cards per dollar will disappoint anyone who doesn’t give it a one dollar per card ratio. It’s about the experience, and the value to many readers is really determined by the usability of it for the work you are wanting to do with it. If a deck is too thin or too thick or too shiny, or the artwork or style or keywords aren’t hitting for the reader, then the deck isn’t really an experience worth much. Many readers would happily pay more money for a better conceived and produced deck of 36 cards than a deck of twice the number of cards with a lower value of an overall experience. I preferred the TV mini series Mists of Avalon. It's based off the book. It had Anjelica Huston in it and Julianna Marguiles. On NBC there was a TV mini series called Merlin with Sam Neil as Merlin and Isabella Rossellini as Nimue. Thanks for doing this although I'm two years late. I have a wish list on Amazon. I'm trying to figure out what decks I want and which ones do not resonate with me and getting them off my list. They are $21.10 before tax and shipping on Amazon as of today February 25, 2023. I think the artwork is the reason for the cost as is the guidebook based on what you're saying. Some day I hope to own it. If I don't use it with client, I'll at least use it for personal use.

Oooo finally! A deck I recognise. I have this deck!!!! It was the third one I ever bought. I adore the Camelot mythology so was very drawn to this. Plus I have a friend who used to call herself Avalon professionally. hehe. Very excited to see you with this deck. Also, down here in Oz, all the decks are more expensive than your prices. I think I paid close to $30-$35 for this one.

I'm a year late but I just want to say that there's some heavy controversy about the author of Mists of Avalon. Don't get me wrong, it was my favourite book but I can't recommend it anymore. And with the new information I tried to reread the book but viewed it in a whole new light. I threw it away, I don't even want to gift it to anyone anymore. It's so gross. I'm sorry for all the fans, I know I was one and I'm totally heartbroken. Still this oracle seems interesting and I might buy it because I still love the myth/story.

Thank you for this review! I'm trying to decide between these and The Wisdom of Avalon Oracle (52 card deck) by Collette Baron Reid. I love the Mists of Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley (1982). Bradley broke new ground with her book because it was the first feminist retelling of the Arthurian legends, and focused on the women's experiences, rather than the male point of view. Are any of the cards in this deck of Viviane? She is the lead heroine-- the Lady of the Lake (another name is Nimue, which I see is a card). She was originally called, "The Mermaid," in the earliest stories. The artwork in this deck looks very appealing. There are numerous oracle (and Tarot) decks devoted to the Arthurian legends. I love The Arthurian Tarot. (But it's fairly masculine.) There's a Netflix series called "Cursed," (2020) that's all about Nimue's story (daughter of Merlin, Lady of the Lake, potential love interest of Arthur before he's a king).

Talesin was the name of Merlin. So technically the Merlin card is also Talesin. BUT the second Merlin of Avalon was named Kevin of all names ;) gotta read the book girl! Just finished the 876 page monster :) love!!!!
