I don't follow dance but I happened to see a photo of Misty dancing and she took my breathe away.

Lovely, Misty babysat my friends son & daughter just when she started to dance. We saw her dance Nutcracker in Torrance, she was so elegant & definitely a protege. I love her story of perseverance, talent & sharing. Thank you so much for your positivity!! 🙏🌎✌️

🩰One of my ballet teachers was a tiny Cuban woman who had danced with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. I’m 80 and quit ballet at 13. ☹️

Art is 🎨. White is the absence of color. Black is the inclusion of all colors. Compassion, transparency integrity and accountability for all!

Native American Maria Tallchief faced much of the same resistance in her ballet career.
@Bailey2006a2 жыл бұрын
I don’t believe that Tallchief was ever body shamed like most young black aspiring ballet dancers were and still ARE. This is a virus that is deeply embedded in the world of ballet. This should not be minimized by analogizing it with other kinds of discriminatory practices that are far less destructive. I am happy that Misty continues to address this no matter how many white folks continue to gainsay and pooh-pooh the truth of it all.

What an opportunity from the person at the boys and girls club… does she name those who told her that her skin tone would not work for the ballet line? What is their comment?

Ms Copeland was born in Kansas City, and she was identified as a ballet prodigy at 12 or 13. Alvin Ailey Dance Company for children's classes is in Kansas City. I wonder if your mother trained with them.

Really pretty... she's so expressive with her body. Of course, seeing what she does with her feet and legs is mesmerizing, but it's much more than that. Even in the interview, you only see her face and hands, but she's extremely expressive with her facial expressions and hands too. Recognizing prettiness, beauty, elegance are perhaps things which in part that we don't have to learn, but I suspect much of it is learned by association. I'm 60, when I was younger I lived in upper middle class communities and I never saw women of color, even in advertising there was segregation. As I've gotten older and our society has become more integrated and I've lived in more diverse communities I see many more women of color... some of those experiences haven't been so good,... well, people are people, some of them you don't get along with so well, don't matter how much, or little, Melanin someone has... My cat Kayla (not the one in the photo... that's Caesar, he passed away several years ago) is a Tortoiseshell with very little lighter pigment fur, is also, like many cats, very elegant in her movement. Kayla also makes such beautiful Sounds... cats generally have a much greater variety of sounds that they elicit than dogs. Besides the fact that Kayla is very affectionate and elegant it's also the beautiful varieties of meows and meow purrs that she elicits that made me fall in love with her right away. Like Caesar, she's a kitty of color too. Once you get to know a cat like Kayla you realize she's got all that pretty stuff too, except she's got more of a brunette beauty as opposed to a blonde beauty... it's just different, but not less pretty, just different. The name MIsty also has a special significance for me too. I think Misty is a beautiful woman's name.

You don't have to model someone who looks like you. My role models were mostly men when I was a little girl -especially men like Martin Luther King & Later Richard Pryor.

@3:30 If "you can't be what you can't see", then how do we get pioneers in any expertise? I don't agree with Maya Angelo. There is always one person who has the imagination to see themself doing something that no one else who they identify with does. Or maybe they find other ways to identify with people who are already in those roles, so they can be mentors and inspirations for that person too.

A cheer for local communities that deliberately look for kids like the one Misty Copeland was then - and for a state that deliberately supports that. California now has free community college for everyone; at 64, I am beginning a new chapter. Instead of forcing your kids to go to other states for education, healthcare, and equality, give them the moon where you live. And let the adults have the same opportunities Still got a race problem? Walls you build stop you too..
