Hey hey, Time for some real grown up jazz guitar!... lol. I listened to a lot of Joe's clinic recently and I'm in love with the character... and his playing, obviously. As an eternal jazz guitar student... I think the main lesson I got, out of these clinics, is that most of us already know more than enough to play at a high level but what makes a difference is when you're able to put everything together. This was probably one of the toughest piece I had to write down. I suspect he got lost in his rhythm at 1 or 2 places, when he's holding some wild motifs. I made my best to reverse engineer what was intended but I might be wrong here and there. Don't start me on the chord analysis...lol. Have fun!

Francois, THANK YOU for these wonderful transcriptions! I have a personal fondness for your Ted Greene and this Diorio video, because I took lessons from from them both.

Thanks François, A truly underappreciated musician. I've been a fan since I first heard him in the 70's with Ira Sullivan who was another underrated jazz musician. These records are in most cases long out of print. Thanks for keeping his voice alive. Rob T

Joe Diorio made a series of workshops in Brazil in the early 1990s. It is said that he gave some examples of his harmony and someone asked: "master, what about the third?", to which Joe replied: "does it sound good? Then fuck the third...". I remembered this story because of this passage in the end of the second A (0:48). Sounds beautiful and strange to me, and when I checked... both the dominant and resolution chords are omit3! A true master of jazz guitar! Thanks for this trancription, fantastic work!

Hi Francois, most obviously, another masterful task you've undertaken and again, pulled it off exquisitely. Unfortunately ( regrettably ), I had never heard of Joe, so I have some amount of listening and reading to catch up on. This piece is so compelling, and again, I don't have words to express the musical beauty and technical wonder of Joe's playing. And once again, so appreciative of your efforts and for sharing your commitment to Jazz & Guitar.

@qz3bmz , if you never heard of Joe, allow me a suggestion: get his book " 21st century intervallic designs". It's a small book so full of material that you can study for 30 years and always find something new and useful, and the more you return to it the more you will get deep in his conceptions. The Maestro was one of a kind.

Thanks so much for the referral, I certainly will get this book and see what I can do. So much of what he is playing stirs motivations to learn from him. He is one of the most compelling guitarists I have heard.

Great arrangement; great transcription. Thanks very much. I got to study with Joe for a year in the early 80s. He was a very inspiring guy to be around, in many different ways.

Yes back to Joe D, real jazz. Joe has it all as a player and improviser. And impeccable taste as to what he plays and does not play.. aka Miles.

Why does the sheet sometimes say #11 and other times b5? Under which circumstance do you use one notation over the other?
Жыл бұрын
I check what the notes relation to the root are. Per ex. for a Db7 with a G I will say #11 because G is the 11th of Db. For a B7 with an F I will use a b5 because F is the 5th of B. This is the basis I'm using but it's not always possible to follow this logic so in some situations you will find alterations that do not correspond to their relation to the root. Per ex. I notate a lots of #9th with minor 3rd because the melodic line would makes no sense. If I see something like F-Eb-D over a D7, #9 would be E# but I prefer writing F because E#-Eb-D would look weird. There are many other situations where I'm cheating a bit.

Thanks for the explanation. That’s a logical approach.
