@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 I have heard Green Dolphin Street isn't in the 6th edition, but the 5th edition. That is insane to me because that song represents jazz for me and I think it is because of Jarrett. He easily has 3 recordings that are in the top 6 of that song for me. Makes no sense why they would yank that out.
@rondrotoskeyboardimprov94532 жыл бұрын
@@mattf9076 I wish it was in the current edition too. I think they may have put in into one of the other volumes.

Beautiful rendition of one of my favorites! And the story you told was delightful - reminded me of the old days when I used to listen to Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz". Thanks so much!

Still one of my faves. Listen to Mathis one more time and allow yourself to be astounded by the note(and approach) after the instrumental section. Amazing(and unplanned/improvised by Johnny). Thank you for your presentation, Maestro. Beautiful arrangement and love the anecdotes, one of the best things about belonging to the Jazz community. Inspiration pure. 🌹🌹🌹🌹

Very entertaining, and a great wee bunch of bedtime stories at the beginning to get us in the mood. Loved your reharmonisation and will look at it in depth (that and the touches of block chords). I was very excited when I heard the Oscar Peterson version, which hits a D major chord (instead of an E flat) straight on the nose, after the two introductory notes, and then he has a whole bar to slide back up the semitone. You've got an enviable "relaxed stride" touch which I could listen to for hours.
@rondrotoskeyboardimprov94532 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was lucky to study with Billy Taylor and a pianist/composer named Hale Smith, who both developed that relaxed stride touch in the late 1930s, before bebop.

Loved it, including the stories. I ordered Dr. Taylor’s book and will look forward to reading it. Remind me to tell you my Misty story on Thursday! Not as good as yours, but it is an important tune to me! Welcome home!

Thanks for the lesson. I love what you call reharmonization. I picked it up from piano works of Brahms. He’ll often use slightly different chords when a section is being repeated. Very effective.
@rondrotoskeyboardimprov94532 жыл бұрын
Yep, it comes from the classical composers, historically. Mozart's Rondo in A minor is one of the best, as well as Brahms.

I honestly found this video just while browsing recommendations. I’ve barely been taking some advanced jazz piano off and on for about a year. This song certainly takes me back. I totally loved all your stories as well. Thanks for the inspiration.

Loved this one! I am a new jazz pianist so this is very helpful! I will also take up that opportunity of taking that chance when called up, I study with the pianist "Stephen Scott" and he invited me to his gig this weekend and he said he might call me up to sit in on a tune, so if that does happen I will take it even though I'll be nervous as hell. One other thing, I was looking for a On Green Dolphin Street lesson on your channel, and you don't have one, I was wondering if you would be covering that tune anytime soon? Been learning that one
@rondrotoskeyboardimprov94532 жыл бұрын
Hi Lemonah. I'm glad this helps you in your journey into jazz! Good luck if and when you play in public! That's a good idea to do Greeon Dolphin Street. I'm not sure when, but I'll eventually do one.
