Just can't forget your explanation.. Anyone can learn physics but teaching it to others in layman's language is the real talent ..

I found this while briefly searching for a vid to demonstrate exploding wires similar to what happens in Exploding Bridge Wires used for initiating an Explosive Train, Igniting Propellant for a solid [fuel] rocket motor, etc. This was a nice and concise demonstration.

Loved this demonstration! For the 3000V and 450J stated, The capacitance there would be 100uF. C[Farad] = 2 * Energy[Joule] * V^2[Volt]

Sorry, in this condenser, to have a more powerful discharge it is necessary to increase the diameter of the wires. The wires you see in the video are small.

What's the thickest gauge of wire that you think you could 'explode' in this manner?

Those wires which are involved in the connection of these apparatus can break due to high voltage too . So be aware of that . That's too dangerous . A sudden appear of hugh amount of energy will make you feel heat and will burn your hands

How did you calculated the 450 joules? (as showed at 0:59)

Basically the circuit for setting of nukes :-) Just a spark-gap that does the switching, and ofc a lot more of developed electronics.... And Pulse Forming... And that's enough education for most :)

Btw, if she touched that output on that capacitor with just her hands, she would have been dead before she hit the floor from touching it. That's why she uses a copper bar and an insulated rod to discharge the capacitor. That current and voltage will kill you if you touch the output of a charged capacitor that's capable of outputting 3,000 volts.

At least she had her eyes closed. No sense taking a risk by not wearing safety glasses and maybe hearing protection. There are a lot of interesting uses for exploding wire, it would have been better if they had mentioned a couple.

I would expect a better video explaining this from MIT. You are MIT but me as a high school/military/commercial electrician/military train again guy I would at least feel challenged by this video. But instead your calculations are in the description which the are not in the description. Show the calculation to challenge people to understand. Even having the formula with the answer could challenge someone or having the numbers plugged into the formula could challenge someone. But lazy editing see the description and not even including it is just sad. Is MIT a leader of education or another ITT tech.
