The big difference between a college like MIT and lets say the college that I went to San Diego state university is the level of maturity of the student. Yes they are “smarter” but generally all these people were either nerdy or extremely mature beyond their years.
@alissa32222 жыл бұрын
hey I'm kind of thinking of applying to San Diego state university, do you think it is hard to get into?
@miavatarful2 жыл бұрын
@@alissa3222 Yes, it’s very competitive now. I recommend getting into a university if you have the grades. Also stay away from business degrees unless you double major. I would minor in finance and major in stem or something artistic. If you don’t have the grades then apply to San Marcos. The people are super chill and you’re still very close to the beach.

@@miavatarful thanks it really helped me a lot. And also what do you think about California state university: LA? The acceptance rate is pretty high so it makes me wanna apply there… but I’m not sure if the academics are good there
@miavatarful2 жыл бұрын
@@alissa3222 Just another State school with a different location. Your education will be exactly the same as San Diego state or any other state school. I don’t know if anyone that went there but just know that the easier to get in, the lower quality of student. Generally a UC student is much more serious about their academics than a state student. This is not to say that you can’t have a successful life after college just know that the people that are going to higher level schools generally are higher level people. Surround yourself with higher level individuals in my opinion. If your grades were pretty trash in highschool then go to community college and work your ass off. I was a transfer student into SDSU. I have friends that transferred into UC schools such as UCSD and Berkeley. Both respected around the world. The name recognition of these schools can help when getting your first interview and also the friends and connections you will make will be much more promising than a state school graduate. Still, you control your destiny and plenty of people have gone to no name schools and have come out extremely successful but they used their college for education purposes and they did all the heavy lifting of creating a name for themselves because their degree didn’t hold any prestige.

These kids speak the truth. I got denied from both MIT and Harvard (ended up graduating from Columbia). CalTech and MIT are the hardest universities in the US, and probably the world, to succeed at. The level of competition is unfathomable for most people. Think about it- no matter how damn hard a professor makes an exam there is SOMEONE who will make an A on it since this small campus is a collection of the top .0005% of college students. Theres no cap to class difficulty here, whereas there is a limit on how difficult a state school class can be because curve cracking geniuses are so much less common at a public university. All these MIT students are there for pure academics, whereas an Ivy like Harvard reserves spots for the children of the extremely rich, powerful politicians, very strong legacy ties, and many D1 athletes. These aforementioned students are usually a lower caliber of student vs the Harvard/MIT kids that got in on academic merit for STEM degrees. Also Harvard has rampant grade inflation, being an A student there is much less of an achievement.

It’s not the curriculum that makes MIT stand out from a regular school. Not to mention, employers seeing that you went to a prestigious school plays in your favor.

@@JamesJoyce12 No he is partially right. When it comes to profs, he's wrong since there are many profs that are good in even community college and horrible ones in prestigious unis. But when it comes to connections, he is completely right. Sure it is still possible to get very big offers at a state school; e.g. getting an internship offer at google as a comp sci student, but if ur at a school like MIT, offers like that are practically a given. Resources and facilities are probably better for engineering compared to a state school. There is most likely better funding for engineering clubs to build awesome projects and better equipment to use, but like I said before, people don't go to these schools for that reason. They go there for the CONNECTIONS.

Look, they are the collection of the US brightest students. But don't think that they're the best of the US it means they're the best of the world. A 19 year old kid in the US that got accepted into MIT has nothing over a 19 year old kid in Russia that got accepted in the toughest university in Russia. The percentile of population is the same, you can't say the top 0.5% of US students are better 0.5% of India students just because they're US. When the guy said he got 1530 on his SAT, it's a gigantic signal that it's not that hard to get in. 1530 on SAT is extremely common among Asian countries best and brightest students. Bright people exist everywhere, the top 0.5% of people in Namibia is approximately just as smart as the 0.5% of people in the US. They don't have the same conditions but they're not "dumber".
