How can you stop taking everything so seriously, let yourself be messy, and just have fun? Mitch Grassi, musician, singer, 1/5 of the Grammy Award-winning vocal group Pentatonix, and the voice and mastermind behind Messer, grew up wondering why he never felt like he fit in. But through his music, he has embraced what makes him stand out, which has had a ripple effect on millions of people around the world. He shares how Pentatonix became a huge success after their first record label dropped them, how to let in lightness and love, give yourself permission to not be perfect (even when performing live for thousands of people), enjoy the ride, and trust that everything is working out the way it's meant to be.

I love that Mitch took the thing that was a source of pain, (bullying, and teasing of his "girl voice") and he turned it into his SUPERPOWER! You are a hero for ALL, not just little gay youth! You lead by example; you have an immense talent and an immense humility! I get all of these same feelings from the five of you!

I’ve often felt that PTX’s spirit shines through their music and personalities. Just following their journey from teenagers to being global superstars, you can see how they spread love in their performances. They’ve been through some tough times and they’ve come through it with a lot of grace and grit. Love this interview. ❤

I watched a British reaction channel. They reacted to PTX’s cover of GOLD. Their comment was something along these lines……”if life from another planet were to come to earth, they would want to have them listen to PTX to show what a human being is capable of” What a true gift these 5 (6) members truly have! ❤️

Absolutely, love how humble Mitch and the rest of Pentatonix have remained. I love Pentatonix, but Mitch's voice and his range, is so captivating. My father passed away in 2020 and shortly after they released Amazing Grace My Chains Are Gone, it got me through a difficult time. I listen to Pentatonix daily. My 7 and 5 year old granddaughter's absolutely love Mitch.

This is one of the best interviews I've ever watched. Thank you for letting him know repeatedly how we ALL feel about him. I'm not delusional enough to think he is perfect, because none of us are. But, he is light and joy and happiness and positivity and love. If you believe in God, those are all his attributes, which validates Mitch's definition of who/what God is. We know Mitch doesn't have the perfect life. He struggles with issues similar to ours, but he sets a fine example on how to move past things. He's just a blessing to know, and like Cathy said, it's an honor to be here on earth, the same time he is. 😊

What a beautiful conversation! I'm not the kind of person who really gets starstruck or obsessed with celebrities (as someone in a creative field, I've had my own experiences with people who can get just a little too intense about the people whose work they admire), but from the moment I found out about Mitch I was blown away not only by by his almost incomprehensible talent, but by his kindness, humbleness, sense of humor, devotion to music and so many other wonderful qualities they seem too many to list. It always seems to me that the best people, the ones worth knowing and who I treasure most as my personal friends, are those who've been through difficult times, have learned from those times and use those lessons to heal themselves and others. A little over a year ago, my sister told me "You have to see this!" The "this" was Mitch's cover of Billie Eilish's song "Your Power," which is, of course about the way a young woman is manipulated and abused by a much older partner. I'm 66 years old and have listened to many, many hours of amazing music in my lifetime, but I knew at once that not only was Mitch's voice the most beautiful I'd ever heard, but also the most evocative. At 13, I was put through conversion therapy at my family's church with a 50-something church elder who was a pedophile. The event is one became one of my heal-and-heal-others moments, but neither at that time, nor in the future, was the pain of the event ever acknowledged or addressed. Listening to that song, hearing Mitch sing, so tenderly, the lines "How could you?/How dare you?" and "You made me feel I was the devil" just (and this is hard to explain) filled me with the sense of how absolutely wrong it was to make a young queer woman, an innocent and kind child, that she she was of the devil just because of the way she'd been born, and that a presence of love in the universe completely different from the cruel, judging God I'd grown up with, saw me and cared for me, and that none of it had been my fault. What a tremendous gift it is, to be a force of goodness in the world. And now that I've written a novel... :)

yours is one of the most poignant and profound response i have seen on all the pentatonix youtube experiences. I now have a new respect for Your Power. and congratulations to you for surviving. As a gay man growing up in the 60;s and 70;s i was lucky enough to experience no bad things related to that, but i have often thought i was so lucky to have escaped that religious bigotry. my lutheran church never went there , thank god. . society has certainly come a long way, even since Mitch was on the Sing Off and encouraged to be in the background because he projected gay. boy did he get the last laugh. he is one of my favorite people along with the others inptx including ben, and their significant others. pure joy

Kristine: HaHa…I had to chuckle ruefully when you wrote about how some people can get just a little too intense about those they admire…Yes, I AM that human!😊 I’m an obsessive/compulsive person…my family won’t allow me to wax on about PTX or Mitch or even music, anymore. Sigh. I am ‘different’. Sometimes I just feel like I’m going to explode if I can’t express my feelings, and then once I start, the joy of the release is so nice I don’t want to stop. Eventually, I realize the eyes my captive audience are starting to glaze over and roll back in their head…and I apologize and stop my endless yammering. Though reluctantly, I admit. I am house-bound and am alone most of the day so I think that when I recognize a kind, intelligent and sentient human, my online (and offline) radar kicks in and, we’ll, you know the rest. On behalf of myself and others like me, I ask forgiveness (but I don’t promise to stop…I don’t think I could and I wouldn’t want to break any promises). 🥴🙄

I so agree with every word you say Cathy! Thank you so much for this interview! If I'd met Mitch I would have been so star struck I wouldn't have been able to speak! 'Pentatonix concerts are love bombs' - that's so true! I feel about Mitch as you do. He is a once-in-a-generation talent and we need to to bottle him up and keep him safe for the whole universe to share! I have loved Pentatonix since the Sing Off days and I genuinely feel that people of all ages and all backgrounds can take so much from PTX. I'm 53 and I feel I'm getting as much out of the band as young children who are just discovering them now. I have some favourites but there has never been a PTX song I haven't liked and now we have solo projects to enjoy from them too including Messer, Scott's song Mars, Kirstie's solo album and Kevin's KZbin channel. I have never been able to see PTX live but I'm finally getting to experience what you did, in May, with my daughter (who is also a Pentaholic!) when they come to London. Thank you Cathy for this wonderful interview with Mitch. I have loved Pentatonix since I first heard their version of Little Drummer Boy years ago. I am currently in my 60's and saw them live for the first time in November 2022 in Oakland. Truly a dream come true. You had me in tears several times during this interview cause I honestly feel the same everytime I hear them sing and I have always gravitated towards Mitch the most I think because I can relate to him the most even though I love them all for different reasons. I can't even put into words how impactful their music is to me. Thank you for telling him how important and loved he is cause I think all of us Pentaholics and Messer fans would love to be able to say that to him and have him feel it and believe it. PTX is one of a kind, they have all remained so humble and kind. And Mitch, he is just of another world. There are not enough words to describe him and what he does for us and me. ❤

Because they are five members, it amplifies the feeling all the more as it is like a tsunami of love, honesty, truth, respect, patience, all in a harmony of diversity where it is a safe place for everyone. My Hollywood Bowl experience was extremely cool. Walk slowly, after the show, in a calm environment and at the pace of people of all ages who are still under the influence of this phenomenon that they come to experience. They are like children playing in their favorite childhood park... we feel it, we witness their support for each other. Their only desire is for everyone to feel good and for everyone to be an essential link to the show. They bring us into a space of well-being and better being. They radiate so much happiness that we have to share it. We are talking about Pentatonix yes, but about each of them. We're talking about Kirstin, Mitch, Scott, Kevin, Matt and Avi. Yes it is essential to know the individuals. Even young children know all their names. I promised my granddaughter that I would take her to a show one. For me too Mitch is the link in this universe that everyone deserves to meet.

Mitch is special. It's such an overused word - but true. His voice is a One in 7+Billion Gift! I mean... we are ALL one in 7B, but he's way up there in the Unique stakes. "Stop you in your tracks" beauty. I'm really new to PTX, only 'discovered' this phenomenal group a couple of years back -on KZbin -and been addicted ever since. I'm in my 60's now, live over here in Australia, and have sung most of my life; choral work, wine bars, folk clubs, jazz and also a cappella. All by ear, I never learned to read music. I stopped singing around 10 years ago when I developed adult-onset asthma and couldn't maintain my breath control. Watching PTX has got me singing again and starting to flex my vocal chords. I've been shocked to discover my high and even medium soprano is 'gone'! Now a kind of deep alto! I gather that's 'age' but also no vocal exercises. I'm getting back into it. Practicing, for no-one but myself and working out whether I can get back some of my higher range, but mainly just rediscovering how much I love to sing. I'm really pleased to hear that Mitch is very diligent about his instrument. It really IS athleticism. It's about: whole body work, core strength, grounding, good posture, expanding your lung capacity, maintaining flexibility and fluidity within the whole vocal structure, eating well, resting well, good hydration, { and not putting toxic garbage in your body / your brain! } and, for in-demand artists, VERY importantly, learning how to - yes - pace yourself. It can be terrifying to say no. Every successful artist knows that some of the pathways to where they are now, were random steps, side steps, hiccups and even back steps and reframing, + a few catapults, some planned, some not! Knowing that makes it HARDER to say no. There's always that little voice in the back that say's; ‘what if this is one of those critically important opportunities that I'll regret 'missing'. The answer to that voice, with maturity, is;; “Nothing is that critical!” If I leave that pathway - my feet will go on another - and that was then meant to be. I trust in my talent, myself, and my ‘team’. One of the things I really LOVE about PTX is that EVERY PTX member is a highly skilled and unique Lead Vocalist in their own right, but far MORE than this is their combined energy / synergy, whatever you want to call it and this doesn't rest on sheer talent. Of course there will be ups and downs and fallings out and fallings in etc. in any group over time, but one of the things, that shines for me about PTX, is the respect evident, where each member works to help each other 'shine'. As for Mitch; not taking anything away from PTX, but when I saw his Cover of ‘Your Power’ I was stunned and then HUNGRY for more Mitch solo pieces, and I gather he’s now doing more in this space. Great! Keep exploring and creating. Lot’s of Love. L 😊

He and they really do ignite so much for all of us. November 17th in Oakland at their concert was absolutely one of my favorite days of my life! That concert also turned my husband into a fellow Pentaholic.

The word “feel” was so present in this conversation, and I can say from the bottom of my heart I hadn’t felt what I felt listening to this in a long time. You both have such a gift to make others feel and connect with your words and love. I was literally about to cry throughout this whole conversation, and I don’t cry easy! About Mitch, he’s just the kindest most amazing person I’ve met, like you said, he’s everything and it’s mind blowing. I’m just so happy to be able to experience life while knowing his soul which is so resonant and human, and real. Thank you so much for this! 🙏❤️ I feel more inspired to go easy on myself and trust and follow my gut, and enjoy life!

That comment about being quiet resonates so much with me. I am a quiet person and get very stressed when in situations where I feel like I need to find something to talk about. I am not good at doing small talk. When I have things to say, I will talk.

Thank you Cathy for interviewing the wonderful person, artist and talent that is Mitch Grassi. It was wonderful to listen to him speak and articulate his thought. I always enjoy listening to Mitch speak. Love his smile, his joy and his laughter. What a lot of wonderful gems in all that he said here. So open and honest and pure, and sharing so much. His gift and his talent are phenomenal and I continue to wish him well in all that he does. Thank you Cathy. Thank you Mitch.

Omg I loved this interview. I feel the same way you do. I love how you talk to Mitch I've always felt this way about him and all of them. They do just fill up your soul. And The Hollywood Bowel was just "love". It so funny because I felt the love during this interview and I just cried. I hope Mitch and all them know how much they really do touch our souls. How God has blessed them with Great Love. Thank you for this. I just wanted to hug you all. Lol

I loved this interview. Of course loved how well spoken Mitch is as always but also loved how you spoke to him. You gave a voice to so many of us that can’t tell him what he means to us. I share your feelings about him and the rest of the group. Also how it feels to experience them in concert. I too was at that Hollywood bowl show. I’ve got some of the videos on my channel if you ever want to relive that night. Oh and minor correction. Their name is just Pentatonix. Not The Pentatonix.

I LOVED this! I love Mitch so much! I agree with so many of the things you said about him in the interview… I love his musicality, his integrity, humility and, of course THAT VOICE. I live to hear him sing. When he sings I feel like I’m on a magic carpet ride, soaring above it all and surrounded and engulfed by a joy like no other, and, ironically, feeling like I could drown in his voice and never miss air…because his voice becomes my oxygen. I also resonate with who he is because I share many of his traits. I am an HSP and it sounds like he is too. I am a performer who is also very introverted. I rarely ever feel like I belong anywhere or with anyone. I just feel ‘different’ from most people. The irony (again) is that I felt I suddenly found where I belonged, the first time I heard them sing. And this was both very, very good and colossally bad. It was like discovering that ‘your people’ come from a planet You’ll never be able to get to. I finally saw them live at the Hollywood Bowl, and I cried my way through the concert. So much beauty, so much feeling, so far away from me. I was overwhelmed. I’m also a singer/songwriter/vocal arranger, and music has been EVERYTHING for me since I was a tiny child. I learned to sing and adore harmony when I was very young and always loved it. I was a soloist but I never wanted to give up singing harmonies. I grew up singing in church and school choirs, and learned to sight read when I was twelve, by osmosis. I spent my school years searching for what hadn’t been created yet: a group I could be a part of where I could sing solos but also sing harmonies with others who were fast like me. I was never able to find what I was looking for. Until I heard Pentatonix. I was initially in shock: I mean, they were the very epitome of what I had been searching for, all those years ago, but I missed that train years before it left the station! I also am a Christian and feel that singing is my way to pray, and praise God, so what you said about being able to bring your children to a concert really spoke to me. It’s not fashionable to be kind and wholesome and edifying, but, thank God, they’ve made it popular! Anyway, I would give a lot to be able to do what you did today. I’ve wanted to sing with them all, but to actually sit somewhere quiet and talk with Mitch for hours about his gifting, his music and mine; his ways of coping when he felt so different growing up because I’ve felt like a misfit, a marginal person for a lot of my life. and then, in my perfect dream, I’d sit back and ask him to sing for me. For just me. Then we’d sing together and then I would happily die, as I would already be in Heaven! Thank you for making my day with this interview. Bless you both.

Thank you so much!! I feel I was truly meant to listen to this. I’m an empath just coming to, finally, accept my gift and how to control it. Sucks when you feel everyone around you and don’t know why. I’ve always intuitively felt the goodness in Pentatonix. I also am so happy that Mitch is so much like I felt him to be. ❤ Thank you again and new subscriber here can’t wait to watch other interviews.

wow! Thank you for doing this interview and thank you for sharing it. You said things to him that I have wanted him to hear. About the love bombs: I believe this is true and I believe it is vibrational. I also believe that they generate increased oxytocin levels in their audience. I would love to study this to confirm my theory.

Your comment confuses me a bit. Talking about being shocked that he went deep about his experience being gay. Ever since they won the sing off and especially since the start of superfruit, Mitch has always been very open about being gay and sharing his experiences. That’s how he’s helped so many people in the same situation feel comfortable enough to come out and be themselves. Tons of people have come forward with how much he helped them learn it’s okay to comfortable in their own skin.

For Mitch… God means you to be EXACTLY who you are! We are all meant to learn and expand ourselves but some people are just SO narrow-minded they refuse to learn! Also age has a lot to do with making you more comfortable with yourself and confident in yourself. So many of us SEE YOU (Avatar?) and enjoy you and Pentatonix. Your song Lucky Ones IS all of your stories. And we are so blessed to have you!🥰

Wow!!! That was an excellent interview with Mitch. He's an amazing human. It's great to hear that he (now) feels the love that people have for him. That was one of the best interviews that I have ever watched. Thank you. It's always better when the interviewer is a fan who can ask what the listeners want to ask and/or express to the artist how the artist made them feel. I enjoyed this interview very much.
