My dad was having exactly what this looks like… we had several neurology teams at 3 different hospitals before we got the answer of absent seizures. (He had other things going on but this was the one that no one could tell us the cause or reason of) It took one nurse walking by the room at the right time to say “oh, those are absent seizures!” She was furthering her education in neurology and knew immediately.

@stagnant13 Well, one hospital was actually horrible and somehow forgot to tell us that testing came back that showed he had developed Epilepsy.. the rest tried their best. She wasn’t a student. She was an RN that was studying to go solely into Neurology. At this visit, we were in the emergency room. At all 3 hospitals, they had cameras on him and was hooked up to an EEG during his stays. They couldn’t see his absent seizures because he would just freeze and not be able to speak. They also wouldn’t show up on the EEG. By the time I’d get a staff member to us, it would already be over. This angel of a woman walked in when she heard me asking him if he could hear me and saw what was happening first hand.

Oddly, and long story short here, my mother coded in the hospital after having a boat load of tests as to why she was so ill. They brought her back, intubated her, still didn't know what was wrong. It was a nurse that suggested they give her a blood gas test. Here no doctor mentioned that. That nurse saved my mother's life. If there is, depending on the severity, we need the option to retire that individual and for a special election.

The aide's job is to make sure everything looks 'normal', nothing to see here, all well, and move on. She likely would react exactly this way if it was the first time this happened or the tenth time. The aide's reaction is not an indicator of anything other than the aide's ability to 'handle the situation'. After the event, behind the scenes, I would expect anyone in McConnell's entourage would have done their best to persuade him to make a doctor's appointment asap. He might well think nothing of it because perhaps he is unaware that anything unusual happened. He looked lost during the freeze and then he looked very confused. He might claim all is well and there's nothing to worry about. The behaviour of the people around him is not based on him getting medical help or not, it's based on their job description. McConnell is all grown up and makes his own decisions. I don't like the man, I don't agree with his politics, but I hope he is getting the medical attention he obviously needs. As for comments about him having to retire, I tend to think he should have retired ages ago and that his current medical problem has nothing to do with retiring or not, except that it would probably be better for him to have less stress and try to enjoy a retirement after a long life of work.

What I found most odd, after the first "incident" was that there wasn't some kind of immediate medical intervention. Like what would happen with normal people. Imagine you're at work and that happens to a co worker. Everything would stop and people would be calling for a doctor/ ambulance. None of that happened. It was just 'the show must go on. Just move the senator a couple feet away, and carry on. Either everybody was aware that this could happen, but it hadn't happened in public yet, or they're lacking normal human empathy. I think his 2nd episode indicates early stages of dementia. I worked in nursing years ago, my mother was a nurse for almost 40 years, and two of my sisters were as well. We all did considerable time providing care for dementia patients. Both sets of my grandparents developed dementia, and we saw them through the early stages until their passing. The freeze (most recent incident), is exactly what we saw in patients (and our own family) in the early stages. The 10-20 second freeze, looking to the right, zoning out, and confusion as they became lucid again. These episodes became more frequent as their dementia worsened. Mitch’s “handlers” are obviously prepared for these episodes too, and I’m willing to bet the frequency of the episodes is increasing every day. What his staff and party are doing to him is wrong. He’s being held hostage to his office and political position by his party and staff for votes and signatures. It’s not right. He clearly is both physically and mentally incompetent to perform his duties. He needs to be allowed to retire.

Exactly, I went through this with my Dad. They did give him medicine for Seizures and they did reduce the number of them, but every once in awhile he had one. He could not remember things that happened a few days ago and that got worse as the years went by. His staff knows that he has this, as does his family, that I am sure of. He has no business being in this job, he needs to retire now!!!! His family needs to get him out of this, I would. It is making it worse for him to be in this job.

I had one while doing an oral report to the class and they had a difficult time bringing me out of it. The other students said I was standing there staring off into space and licking my lips. I've seen something similar in a close family member, about 4 years old. They were experiencing similar, but shorter freezes (absence seizure). On one occasion they vomited. On another they wet themselves. In another case they were standing unresponsive and when I looked into their eyes they were looking up and to their right. Until they had a full blown seizure we didn't realize what was going on. Once we experience the full blown seizure we got them on medication and things improved...but it's scary. They're fine now without a requirement for medication. It's possible that McConnell's falls are losing balance during a seizure. I'm sure they've given him a EEG by now. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a full blown seizure in his future unless they've already got him on medication.

I find honor in even a bad senator being willing to admit they're too tired or disabled to continue in office. If the Republicans really need him so bad, then they're desperate.

@@klocke-hx3xl I understand that these elderly members of politics are in decline mentally right before our eyes. I don't need anyone to explain what everyone is witnessing in real time. Don't worry. I'm here to remind everyone that Mitch McConnell is a selfish, greedy, evil person, and he should get no sympathy from the countless people he hurts with every vote in Congress.

A lot of things like this are never figured out. The doctors will test for the most alarming things that might be happening. If they don't see anything alarming then they are left with a million possibilities that they will never figure out. All they can do is give anti-seizure medication and tell him not to drive or do anything where a future seizure would be dangerous.

I’m not sure you watched until the end. Seizures are treatable with anti seizure medications. They should be able to adjust the dose so he doesn’t have them anymore. Also you see how short-lasting these have been. Absent his baseline ability to make decisions, this should not significantly impact his ability to work. Assuming these are seizures (my impression as well), they’ve just come up because seizures can be a bit unpredictable, especially as you’re adjusting the medication. That said, my opinion is he is well into retirement age, and it is a demanding job, so it is time in general, but not because of this specifically. (I am an internist and manage these types of things acutely in the hospital)

@@RealMattHaneyAgreed. This presentation strongly resembles short self limiting Petit Mal seizure activity of yet, unestablished aetiology. This would not affect an individuals cognitive capacities ie ability to carry out their working duties (depending on the nature of course ie a surgeon with uncontrolled petit Mal seizures could not work due to the continuous & immediate decision making nature required. It’s more a very short temporary absence of objective thinking, communication & action due to a dis function of electrical activity in the brain, which resolves completely sometimes leaving the patient a little tired afterwards , but often they have no awareness that it has occurred at all. It’s extremely treatable as you say and may well be related to Mr McConnells recent fall and will resolve once his brain has fully healed.

I am elderly and Senator McConnell is elderly. One the issue of whether he would seek re-election it is possible he felt such conflict that he was lost in the moment and perhaps he drifted off to random or day dreaming. Either way, it could be seizures or other causes to include some low level dementia. I am not speaking as a Doctor, but more as an elder who sometimes have issues staying on topic and drifting off to a chain of thoughts similar to day dreaming but more intense as one thought leads to another.

I likely had a transient ischemic attack in my thirties, but my doctor didn't really do much about it. I froze while I was riding my motorcycle and all I could do was to stop and put my feet on the ground, then I couldn't do anything for a couple minutes. It's been over 20 years since then and it never happened again, but being in that situation could've killed me.

I had a small diabetic stroke around 2004 while driving to work. I called in & told them I was going back home. Instead, as it turns out, I drove through our little town, ended up on the opposite side of town in my church parking lot, went inside & sat for a while & wrote "notes" that a) were extremely slanted, & b) were mostly gobbledygook, left for home, & I "came to" in my Mama's driveway, handing her a sack of biscuit sandwiches from a fast food chain!! I had PTSD so badly after that, that I couldn't sit behind the wheel for 2 weeks, then for 2 more weeks, i could drive only if someone was with me!! I had had a couple of minor head injuries prior (minor, so we thought. One, I lost conciousness for a couple of minutes, went to the infirmary w/ only an assistant on hand. He told us the xray "shows a black spot, but I don't think it's anything to worry about"!!), these injuries were years prior to that 1st stroke, but never diagnosed as a concussion or any type of brain injury! I never got a report that the xray was ever even seen by a radiologist! IDK if I've ever had absence seizures since then b/c I live alone so no-one is around to observe me, but I've often wondered! I frequently feel myself going black, especially if i'm overly tired, but not sleepy. It lasts just for a split second, kinda like nodding off in church, but w/o my head dropping.

Regardless of age, if a person is not mentally capable of performing their job, representing the people of the United States, they should not be in office. Just like teachers, who can’t teach, or nurses who can’t perform their nursing duties, or bus drivers that can’t drive, there should be limits based on a persons capabilities or lack there of.

I felt like they were seizures as well and that because someone mentioned it was only happening in these setting.. thought maybe the stimulation for camera flash and the busy environment might have been what is triggering them. His physician had also "told him they were not TIA's but regardless, this isn't normal behavior for sure.

My mum used to have exactly the same episodes as these. We would be having a conversation then suddendly she would just be staring at me, slowly licking her lips which went slightly mauve, then after about 20 seconds would be back with me, not knowing that she had frozen. In the UK we sometimes call these petit-mal or mini-fits (I'm not sure that's the medical term). The first thing I thought of when seeing Mitch McConnell staring into space was he was having exactly the same thing as my mum. Sometimes she would have four or five proper seizures, one after the other, that would put her in hospital.

I totally agree. My late ex-husband had been in an accident in which he suffered a concussion. Several years later, he developing epilepsy. Leading up to his first epileptic seizure, he had several episodes like this, what the doctor later termed "petit mal" seizures. Unlike a grand mal seizure, in which his whole body began convulsing, with a petit mal seizure he would just 'go blank' for a minute or two. If, in fact, he does have epilepsy (there are several causes for seizures and if his doctors are at all competent, they are testing him for everything), once he is on medication he should be fine and fully capable of working to the end of his term, if he chooses to do so.

Hell, it’s time for him to step down and get away from the daily pressure of the job. People in congress shouldn’t be allowed to stay on the job until they are no longer functional. It’s time for term limits to be placed on congress, and this is something the American people should be demanding!!!
