I did bicycle deliveries during the pandemic. It was horrible. I was going up and down all the very steepest hills, I even had to deliver at the top of Twin Peaks. While I am dying, climbing the hill, I was getting a call from the customer asking why I was taking so long (they were looking at the map and thought I was a car.) I did so much damage to my self on that particular day that I was essentially bedridden for two weeks afterwards. And that is why I got an ebike.

Curious as to what kind of gearing you’re using. When they first held the old SF Grand Prix, there wasn’t such a thing as compact/subcompact gearing. When the Euros who came over got a first look at the course, their mechanics scoured local bike shops and snapped up all of the largest cassettes they could find.

Also as a recommendation, you should take a trip out to Lake Tohoe. If you do the full Lake Tahoe circuit its ~70 miles with ~5500 ft of climbing but what makes it a real challenge is the starting elevation is ~6500 ft. The Emerald Bay climb is the highlight of route and I think is one of the best views in the country. If you do the whole route it's called "The Most Beautiful Bike Ride in America." If you go and only do one climb, do the Emerald Bay climb, it's incredible. Vegan Cyclist has a really good video on the Tahoe ride.

Great vid. The other week when I was in SF I did Broadway and tried to do Bradford above Tompkins. Broadway was hard; hard enough to really make one wonder whether you were going to make it, but not necessarily as hard as you may go sprinting in a race when you're really motivated. For me, Bradford was impossible. The top and bottom were no real problem, but that middle section of 41% or whatever was impossible in my current state. I'll give it a go with a 34 at the back next time I'm in SF to see the grandkids.

Great video, except the area of a sphere= 4π steradians, which is approximately 41,253 square degrees. So the camera should be the "Insta 41,253" (not 360). On climbs this steep you can get a very nice estimate of gradient by using power. Assume a coefficient of rolling resistance of around 0.5% (this adds to the effective grade). So: x = power / (weight x speed) - 0.5% But then this needs to be adjusted to get gradient, due to the definition of gradient: gradient = x / sqrt(1 - x²) where weight = Mg (mass in kg, g = 9.81 m/s²), including the bike and clothing and water and the camera, etc.
