Honestly. I think one of the main reasons he’s stayed a hero despite what he’s been through is his religion. One of my favorite details from the show that no one talks about is how when he’s anxious his immediate reaction is to pray. When Electra is poisoned he grabs her hand and prays. His religion is his back bone. Also it backs his view of all human life being sacred.

He also rationalised that the reason he was made blind was that god wanted to set him on the path of Daredevil. It's just that the comic code authority came in the 40's and prohibited adult elements, which forced Batman into being campy and kid-friendly. Because of the Batman TV series, DC wanted to shake away the goofy Batman image and reintroduced dark Batman in 1971 with the introduction of the Ra's al Ghul saga. Daredevil didn't become gritty until the 80's.

It helps that he's probably been had most consistently well-written comics through all of Marvel's ups and downs over the decades. You can maybe point to a small few writers whose tenure on the character was either bad or just okay. Most Daredevil comics are varying from really good to some of the best comics out there. Daredevil is awesome. His show is dang near perfection (his only real weak spot being the Defenders spinoff in which he himself was still excellent), and I think it's a crying shame that he hasn't gotten a badass video game yet. He's probably still not my favorite Marvel superhero, but he's easily my second or third favorite, and i think it's fair to say that his best storylines are more top of the line than the best stories of the two characters I might subjectively like more (Spider-Man and Wolverine). Daredevil is super special, super underrated, and he deserves far more love and respect than he gets from comic book readers, superhero fans and the general public alike.

Really excellent dialogue, yeah! Esp. the "avocados at law" scene. Cox and Henson sound like real people, with their smooth, swift line delivery and excellent acting. Avengers movies hae slower line delivery, with pauses to switch camera angles. That chops up the conversations and disengages the viewer a little bit. Watching season 2 of the show made me realize that I actually prefer Punisher as a Daredevil antagonist over having him as a stand-alone character. Not a knock on Frank Castle since he’s a super interesting character in his own right, but I’ve always lumped him in with typical revenge-seeking action heroes like John Wick. But making him a foil to someone who, unlike him, has held onto their morals despite tragedy is way more interesting to me and has way more story potential than just seeking out evil to put down. It’s a battle of ideologies on par with those of Batman and Joker, Superman and Lex Luthor, etc., but stands out from those by being more of a side rivalry to Matt’s real arch nemesis in the Kingpin. It’s why I’ve always wished that the Daredevil film from 2003 and the Punisher film from 2004 a) had both been much better than they were (though I have a soft spot for the latter), and b) had a shared sequel called Daredevil vs Punisher where we could see their rivalry in full flux. A trilogy of films that acts as a prototype MCU by building up the rivalry of two characters by giving them each their own film to shine before pitting them against each other.

Yes, I could have done without Elektra in Season 2. I just wanted to explore Frank more. My own inclination is to side with Frank. Kill the bastards so they'll never hurt anyone ever again. Matt is a half-measure, but I watched an interesting video about this that stuck with me. Frank is about results. Make the world a better place by removing the bad people in it. But Matt is about himself. He doesn't kill people not because they don't deserve to die, but because he refuses to corrupt his soul by crossing that line. One might even call him selfish. That said, I love Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock. He's complicated, violent, dark, oddly funny, and eminently sympathetic. We all root for him.
@lewisholiman92372 жыл бұрын
@@GeoEstes My interpretation of the no-killing rule, and this goes for any superhero, is that it’s as much about setting an example as it is about not corrupting one’s own soul. Both Daredevil and Batman are trying to do more than just take down bad guys. They’re trying to fix the broken cities that shaped them into who they are. Killing their villains would clean up the city faster and save more innocent lives in the short term, but teaching everyone else that the way to get results is to throw morality out the window and take the law completely into their own hands would only lead to chaos. But yeah, it does bother me too in cases like Under the Red Hood or No Way Home where they portray not wanting to get their hands dirty as the only reason why they won’t kill.

Honestly I have to say while Charlie Cox (In both the Netflix series and She-Hulk) is easily the best version of Daredevil, I don’t think the 2003 film is as terrible as people say. The director’s cut rearranges the scenes to make for a more dramatic and well told story. The Kingpin in the film is awesome and while the costumes kinda suck, the performances aren’t terrible. It’s honestly better than I think people remember, maybe give it another chance if you haven’t seen it in awhile.
@alexandrefrauches1322 жыл бұрын
Same plus I think the film nailed the meaning behind Elektra death and Bullseye obsession with Daredevil much better than the show. In the case of Elektra having her being killed by Bullseye reflects the idea of failure, with wounded Matt not being able to help her, setting up his final showdown against Bullseye. In the series she is killed by boring villain and her death didn't had the same impact. Same goes for Bullseye,Colin Farrel nailed the insanity of the villain and him wanting to kill Daredevil out of pride, because the hero was the first to make him missed is understanble motivation. Netflix Bullseye never felt unstable compare to the film version nor the comics.
@Patrick-pc3vq2 жыл бұрын
@@alexandrefrauches132 I always saw it as Netflix Bullseye holds himself back from becoming the comic accurate crazy Bullseye, since in the show it's definetely obvious he is sadistic and likes to hurt people but is aware he'll just get his ass in jail if he gives in to the lust he feels for killing and hurting people, so he holds himself back out of safety.

Great video! Daredevil is also one my favorites heroes (after Spider man, Wally West and, another religious one, Nightcrawler). One point I would add about the character that makes him so cool is his origin and relationship with his father. Unlike other super hero origins at the time, Daredevil origin highlights Matt's father relationship with his son, showing how he raised him,his own struggles, allowing us (readers) to know and connect with it, seeing where Matt morals and values came from, making his father death much more impactful compare to others like the Waynes or even Uncle Ben (the 60's version)

That metaphor added a whole dimension to my enjoyment of Daredevil when I first encountered the character.

I absolutely love the Daredevil show. It is a pretty unique show and I'm sad there wasn't more

10:39 That movie was made during a time when hollywood was in love with the special effects and fight scenes from The Matrix and Crouching Tiger hidden dragon. They figured using that in every action or superhero movie would guarantee box office success.

As a young Catholic misfit, I was drawn to the Dare Devil. I note Matt Murdock is a Catholic, rather than “Christian,” which he is, but the distinction is vital. As referenced in the series. There is an exchange twixt Matt, and Claire who, after stitching him up, remarks how she is amazed by all he does describing his heightened senses, then on his ability to take an incredible beating, when Matt interjects “That last part, that is just being Catholic.” I had to pause, because I just couldn’t stop laughing!

Love seeing a video that explores what makes Daredevil great and not ignoring Matt’s faith. It’s an essential part of his character. Cannot have Daredevil at his best without his faith

daredevil is really the only one who faces the question of whether or not he should kill with his voices of reason telling him he SHOULD kill. it's an interesting twist on the typical hero morality. most other heroes are praised/respected for refusing to kill, but he's treated as a coward, weak, ignorant.

I'm personally obsessed with catholic theology. Daredevil was always one of my top 5s and his the way his faith interacts with the events of the stories is so compelling. It's tough to outrank DD as a character, he's just been handled so well over the years.

An excellent video. Daredevil is my favorite character, a hero who I read the comics to as a child, that helped me through dark times. The show was so good and you really hit the points it told and understanding why people love him. He's so cool and I'm happy you enjoy him as well.

I want to look at it more but I am fascinated with Daredevil in Spider Gwen's solo run. In her earth he is Kingpin's Lawyer, he gave up his good and sold his soul and that is fascinating when you look at how much he time he spends trying to not go down the wrong path

Bravo, sir! Clearly you were great at English Literature in high school, b/c that’s the most comprehensive analysis of the character (particularly the TV version) that I’ve seen. Haha. Not that I’m an authority./And did you say that you’ve just familiarized yourself with the character? I watched the show as soon as it first dropped in 2015 and I’ve never picked it apart this much. Then again, it’s not my job (or even side hustle). Haha. Anyway, once again, great job.

I think season 2 is the best of the show personally. It’s about pushing Matt to his breaking point and that’s exactly what it does, leaving season 3 to start with him at his lowest and end with him at his highest. He has to deal with Punisher, Elektra, and Sticks’s ideology that challenges his own as the city is not becoming safer under his watch and his life is increasingly falling apart. The pacing is fast and the fight scenes are the best of the show, which makes it my personal favorite season.

I respect your opinion, S2 is a ton of fun. I believe S1 is the best but it’s refreshing to see someone talking about something other than S3 which is the worst season.

When i was a kid, i loved the daredevil movie with Ben Affleck (i was a kid okay), loved the character, a blind guy that is stronger than so many people, so much cooler, i was like 😮 And then the netflix show made me say "okay, i was right when i was a child, Daredevil is one of my favorite super heroes".

I like Dr. Strange’s comeback to Mordeau when he’s told he needs to kill. He said “you lack imagination”. As a sorcerer, hero, and doctor that was such a fitting response to the utilitarian/“moral” view on killing. Feel like Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange would make a nice lunch group.
