@M.R._BlueVOКүн бұрын
@@Nocraza_Kram Why is Hawkeye my favorite Marvel hero? I'm so glad you asked! So, you know how most people like Batman because he's capable of working with gods and aliens despite being a human being? That's part of why I love Hawkeye. Except, unlike Batman, he isn't overused & consistently put in overly ridiculous scenarios where he survives due to obvious plot armor. His archery feats in both the comics & films impressed me so much that I decided to practice the sport in high school. Clint Barton wasn't exposed to any extraordinary radiation. He has no X-gene, no mystical artifacts, and no bottomless bank account. He's just a human who's practiced, every single day. And yet, his skills are so effective that he's capable of teaming up with the Avengers, Defenders, Thunderbolts, etc without being a liability. He's even been the leader of the West Coast Avengers at one point. He's one of my favorite redemption characters as well, since he was originally a villain for Iron Man. But eventually changed his ways, joined Cap's Kooky Quartet and has remained a hero ever since. His dynamics with other heroes is also interesting to me, especially with Captain America being his mentor. Overall, I will always be inspired by Cap & Superman. But I relate to Clint more than I do with Spider-Man or Batman. Plus he's hella underappreciated these days.

Honestly I think the argument that superheroes should do more than just defend the status quo is ignoring the important fact that superheroes are powerful, unaccountable individuals, and because of that they have no right to impose change. That’s how you end up with, well, villains. The reason superheroes often defend the status quo is really more selfless than smashing it, and allows for natural change to be brought about by the normal people they inspire to be better
@realchezboi3 күн бұрын
I'd argue often most superheroes are normal people, and the only way to change the status quo isn't through the abuse of their superpowers and terrorism. Most of them are already among some of the MOST influential people in their universes; symbols and icons, world leaders, the smartest scientists and people on earth, and billionaires. They have as much agency and right to change the world as much as a non super-powered civilian, politician or billionaire can, and often the most reason to do so because they often stand the most clearly against crime and the suffering of humanity, things they can do so much more against rather than just waiting around for another crime to happen.
@HandOn-c40009Күн бұрын
let's be honest here, the only reason the status quo will never change is because superhero story are never allowed to end, if the superhero are proactive and change the status quo it will revert back in a year or two. no matter what happen gotham will always be crime ridden city, peter parker would always be struggling to pay rent and so on...

Captain America works because he's the embodiment of Freedom, liberty, and Justice. every day, we still continue to deal with corruption, war, and politics due to the actions of people willing to benefit from their own ambitions and their nature to change or improve the world. Ultron is a good example of what happens when you try to "put a suit of armor around the world". Captain America represents the status quo because his will to not only stand up for the little guy, but also live up to the ideals of Freedom despite questing orders to save the people he cares about. Sometimes, it doesn't take a Futurist to understand the mistakes of the world, but a Patriot. Despite all the power that a man is capable of, in his heart, he's still a good man. That's who Captain America is.

I do want to caution "locking" Cap in to strictly being "Pro Status Quo" as the ideas and values he defends were considered radical in John Locke's era, with Voltaire, Paine, and to an extent Washington being the radicals of their day. So Cap, like American Conservatives, are not Anti-Change, rather they are what Tony is at the start of Endgame: protect the good that one has and make sure the proposed changes are actually helpful.

4:29, Outside of his affinity for traditionally ideals of truth, justice and freedom, Steve’s ideology is centered on honor, courage, humility and compassion. But it’s that sense of honor, of what is honorable, that is depicted as being in conflict with the morally complex, and in many ways morally bankrupt world he is contrasted against in the modern day, 7:54, so his ideals aren't degraded into blind loyalty to his country or arrogance over his feeling of moral superiority to the point of ignoring moral complexity all together. Most notably, Steve is able to quickly rationalize terrible things he and his people did during war time against a more easily identifiable and more overtly detrimental and corrupt enemy because of the ultimate goal of spreading truth, justice and freedom, and thus he condemns SHIELD for making similar compromises in the name of order and control. Steve is an honorable person in a dishonorable world, a world that values order more than virtue. It’s no surprise that while he fought for a world where virtue would not be so easily discarded in the name of order, he is later contrasted against his government assigned replacement, 4:50, John Walker, who fights for a world where is it far more difficult to preserve order without discarding virtue, where it is far more difficult to be honorable, a soldier who tries to be virtuous, but is plagued by an insecurity and jealousy that Steve notably lacked, similar to Steve's own obsession with service and honor to the point of rejecting any compromises, albeit flaws better balanced out with his ultimate desire to protect justice and liberty in the world, not control it. These contrasts also exist with his personally selected successor in Sam Wilson, who similarly to him refuses to engage with the moral complexity of the world in exchange for turning on the government for all its flaws (ironically in reference to situations the Avengers themselves in their failure to stop Thanos created and the governments of the world were left to haphazardly handle as best they could). 9:31, Unfortunately, the idea of being humble and brave enough to create movements a person is part of can often be conflated with abandoning or attempting to destroy those movements, as in recent comics, Steve has been used as a mouthpiece to spout rhetoric demonizing his country as irredeemable due to its flaws without any support for what virtues it still has. Steve in the films similarly destroys SHIELD and unleashes chaos that aids Zemo in his destruction of the Avengers. 10:26, A point few focus on is that Steve very much can be wrong, can cause more harm than good with his rigid values that leave little room for compromise, that his assertion that super-abled individuals, powered or not, never being regulated can just as easily be corrupted by less humble or generous individuals that may decide to impose their will on the world without restraint, use their freedom to steal the freedom of others, the very thing Steve opposes. 13:15, It is Steve's humility that measures his fear and doubt, his compassion (14:28, as fear and doubt alone aren't evil, neither is shame or guilt, as they are a path to humility when someone isn't burdened by the true evil of pride, like Tony's pride), but Steve's belief in his own righteousness that opens the door for the team's failures just as much as Tony's belief in his own ambitions. 13:49, Steve's defense of the "status quo" is more a defense of people's freedom to choose, their freedom to try and make the world better, it's just that progress is slow and regression is a very real possibility. The purpose of heroes isn't to hoard all the problems and the solutions, but to defend it long enough to people to make positive changes for themselves and stop malevolent figures from making negative changes that threaten not just peace and freedom, but also the possibility of progress. This is what people miss when critiquing the status quo, the fact that it's on everyday people to make a difference in the world, that superheroes are a fantasy that reflect aspects of reality, a reality where change is something people have to make happen themselves and often don't out of indolence or ignorance. But that is the greatest strength of this character, analyzing how difficult it can be to be good in a flawed and complex world, wether it is arrogant and misguided or brave and noble to disagree with authority at times, where “doing better” isn’t always enough to make a difference, where there are no easy solutions as “punch the bad guy and go home”, where attempting to do good may end up serving the interests of malevolent individuals instead of the poor and disenfranchised, but still holding onto hope that those virtues can still have the power to make even the smallest of difference as long as people still give it those immaterial concepts power, concepts that are worth giving power to.

One of the commentators pointed out that Steve didn't make the serum, which is true. OTOH - if Someone is going to get the serum, was there another candidate less selfish and arrogant, or more determined, brave, and dedicated to protecting the "little guy?" Erskine couldn't find one, and that's why he picked Steve. As you note, Steve is not a Nationalist. He believes that the country is great because of its ideals, even when the reality doesn't live up to them. One of those ideals is that a just government serves, and derives authority from, the people - and he's seen firsthand what happens when governments abuse their power. So he'll fight for the government when he thinks it's right, and oppose it when he thinks it's wrong. He sees that as his obligation as a citizen. Of course that attitude could make him a vigilante or even a terrorist, but that's where the "Good Man" part comes into this; he hates bullies and won't become one. Also he was never a criminal; the Accords were not a law because they hadn't been ratified, Ross wasn't a judge, and even if he had been he wouldn't have the authority to imprison or execute people without a trial.

I have never hated Captain America but I have never like him either. I know his origin and understand it is vital to the Marvel Universe (super serums - weapon X programs) but it just never appealed to me enough to read. But when you feel indifferent about an IP all it takes is the right cover and or creative team to create a book to spark enough interest to give it a shot. Last years J. Michael Straczinski's Captian America (issue #1) run was the one that could have peaked my interest, but it was a short run I thought it was going to be a long run that would cover much of the start of Captain Americas story, and do so with the same creative team. The cover totally took me to an era I have only seen in pictures and for the first time I had an itch to read the story.... then I saw it was going to be a short run and I'm sure I'll get to it one day but....

Huge captain America but the one thing I disagree with in this video, is your analysis on John Walker. He is not a bully, he was chosen cause he was the best soldier America had that had an outstanding record in his service(many of which, included hostage rescuing). I mean heck, he even mentioned part of his test to prove him a worthy candidate for cap, was him jumping over the grenade. When he became captain America, all he wanted to do was do the right thing which at that point, was stoping the terrorist group, the Flagsmashers, who are literal super powered terroristed who have blown up buildings, killed their hostages, attacked and killed soldiers and etc. Even that scene you are you using when he is yelling at that man, that was because he was harboring the Flagsmashers and spat on caps face. The show tried portraying John as the bad guy and Sam as the morally just but the more you look at it, the more you see the reverse happened. All John wanted to do was stop the Flagsmashers. Nothing he was doing was being abusive or overstepping his authority
@callmev35312 сағат бұрын
John specifically jumped on a dummy grenade knowing it was fake, the opposite of Steve's impulsive self-sacrifice plays. While John is objectively flawed and transitions in and out of an anti-villain role in the series, he is still an interesting character in the sense that while he superficially has many of Steve's traits, they're accompanied by flaws of insecurity and jealousy that tend to outshine what positive qualities, and yet he still finds redemption in his desire to be a hero more than soldier following orders and trying to please his country, going beyond his desire for validation to be genuinely brave, honorable and self-sacrificing. While Steve's desperation to prove himself to have purpose never came at the expense of his sense of honor or humility, that isn't true for Walker, but the fact that he still manages to do good despite is what makes him compelling, moreso than Sam, who the show paints as correct despite his dismissive views on the severity of the terrorists actions or the danger they pose while he judges politicians for not doing more to end strife in the world, acting as if he and other super-abled ("enhanced" in this universe including people like him with advanced abilities, not just super-powered beings) didn't fail to stop a universe shaking catastrophe and the blame falls to the very much not super-abled officials in the world that very much cannot change borders with one phone call. It's for reasons like this that Sam as Captain America isn't trending as much as Disney perhaps hoped and why despite people expecting Thunderbolts to be bland, at least have the entertainment factor of various anti-hero and anti-villain characters from various corners of this franchise's "grounded" parts interacting and adventuring together, especially John and Bucky.

I was looking for this comment. If anybody was bullied in the entire show it was John Walker. The rest of the video is decent but the differences mentioned between him and Steve Rogers are just so wrong
@callmev35313 сағат бұрын
5:22, Still, what essentially separates Walker from Steve is that one fought for a world where order never came at the expense of virtue while the other fights for a world that easily discards virtue to preserve order. He may be honorable and tries to be humble, but insecurity, jealousy, the desire to please his country and his bosses overwhelms him, which reflects Steve's own flaws that he kept in check with his compassionate and generous nature, balancing out his own pride when it came to his sense of moral superiority and that almost greedy desire to serve and to sacrifice to give his life purpose, especially to escape the emptiness of having lost any chance at readjusting to civilian life after the years he spent in service. Far from being a failed character because the writers treated him unfavorably (which doesn't change the fact that villains can be compelling characters regardless of an author's perception of them), John is a fascinating addition to MCU Captain America's mythos because of those traits of Steve's that he lacks, that value of honor, justice, truth, humility, freedom and courage that transcends any one nation or loyalty to any one group, instead being primarily loyal to the interests of a country that may not always have the best interests or intentions, be he lacks the same independence Steve had to be willing to truly challenge the governments of the world and do what he thought was right by his often idealistic and perhaps sometimes unrealistic standards of honor and justice. The issue of the show is trying to paint Walker as being more villainous than he is (which especially doesn't work since despite his villainous behavior of intimidating suspects out of insecurity, publicly executing a surrendering enemy out of impulsive, vengeful rage and lying to his family that he'd avenged their child, he ultimately ends the show endangering himself to save people) and Sam as more wise and humble than he actually is, Sam who ignores the implications of a super-abled (though not specifically "super-powered") individual such as himself judging a handful of politicians on factors they only have so much control over (factors caused by the Avengers' failures affecting civilizations across the universe) while dismissing the severity of legitimately super-powered terrorists attempting thinking they could rampage political change into existence as if that would make people listen to them. The attempted messaging falls flat as its themes ignore the logic of the plot. Either way, John's return in Thunderbolts opposite Bucky looks to be the set up of an, if anything, entertaining adventure, while Captain America 4 is projected as being an overly edited mess, while Chris Evans' proposed return in Avengers Doomsday suggests that the legitimacy of Disney's attempts to solidify Sam's position as a new Captain America will be further put into question.

While I do agree with the points of this video, I think you might've gone a bit too far with John Walker imo. After all, while he isn't exactly a good guy per se, and some of his actions weren't the best... we also have to remember that he's not really fully to blame for any of the stuff he does (not entirely to blame, sure, but I'm not trying to excuse his actions). At the end of the day, he too is a victim of a system that tried to push him into a mold that he clearly didn't fit in. He was treated as a pawn in a grander scheme, a cog in a machine. He was a soldier just trying to do what he could with the weight of the responsibility he had been imparted upon, and it's a shame that many people villainize John's actions when Karli Morgenthau and the Flag Smashers have done worse yet somehow still get more sympathy for... reasons. In a way, while John Walker does help highlight what makes Steve Rogers great as Captain America? He's also a warning to what would happen if a symbol such like the Star-Spangled Man himself was placed under "the wrong guidance", if you will.

Pay attention to his REAL principles. FREEDOM, THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, BELIEVING IN PEOPLE. His first choice as a partner and successor after the ice was a Black man dedicated to helping others. It's really all right there. There's right and wrong

I mean I wouldn’t say he works? Sure there’s a threat every couple weeks, that’s big enough for them to deal with but it’s one and done and he had crazy powers. I don’t even think he had a job back in the forties and he was pretty weak in the military and really didn’t do much . He definitely didn’t put in the work for his build and powers, that was a serum he didn’t make. Hey idk, maybe when he’s an old man he’ll get at job as a mailman. That’s real public service, and he’s still working for the government. Yeah he should get a job for this.

I have to disagree with you on John and Sam John did want to serve his country no matter what, but he also wanted to do what was best and wasn't afraid to break rules when needed, only lashed out due to extreme stress and constant disrespect, and only victim was an unrepentant terrorist Sam, on the other hand, constantly looked for reasons to complain about his country, even making some up, regularly broke rules for conveniences' sake, repeatedly disrespected and mocked those he personally didn't like, and defended the actions of unrepentant terrorists to the faces of their would-be victims John doesn't live up to Steve's example, but he does a hell of a better job of it then Sam does

These issues of the mismanagement of these characters and there conflicts gets even worse when putting into perspective the apparent return of Chris Evans and the controversy around Captain America 4 compared to the Thunderbolts, which at least has the implicit entertainment value of anti-villainous characters like John and Ava, and anti-heroic characters Bucky and Yelena teaming up and going on adventures together instead of attempting to build a narrative around political messages lacking in depth, nuance or self-awareness, which is what Sam's story as Steve's replacement ultimately boils down to. And yes, while John is an anti-villain in the show (as in a villain with positive or sympathetic traits that is primarily still detrimental to others or themselves), its his flaws and contrast to Steve, along with his later redemption despite objectively bad things he did, like envy Bucky's super-attributes, intimidating civilians out of insecurity, impulsively kill a surrendering enemy in public, trying to kill Bucky and Sam in blind manic rage and lying to his friend's family that he avenged him, that make him interesting, more interesting than Sam, because he has more elements to him as a character that are worth exploring.

Your commentary on captain america is great, but I think you have some glaring blind spots. What happens when the status quo isn't good or not good for everyone? Even if you took captain america, he wasn't fighting for freedom, but all people in the 1940s

I'm really not a fan of Cap in the MCU. He never felt inspiring or like he represented what he's supposed to. But I love him in Avengers EMH and the 60's Marvel comics. He really felt inspiring and like a great hero. He would always stick up for what's right, and he would never let people push him down. Brian Bloom was the perfect Captain America.

EMH really is the definitive iteration for me, the Skrull episodes really highlighted what makes him so great.

A comment I placed in another video on the second cap movie movie: The thing is that Tony supported the accords because he wanted to throw his responsibilities as a hero to the government just so he wouldn't feel bad when his decisions blew up in his face. Meanwhile Cap understood that every individual must hold the responsibilities of their own actions and that letting someone else make the decisions for them won't expedite them from said responsibilities. Ironically this is the same reason most people want a government, to have someone else make the decisions for them so they don't have to to the point that they turn a blind eye to all the crap the system does just so they can keep the illusion of being free from their own responsibility.
