My favorite part about this edit was: As the oxygen and glucose moved through the cytoplasm creating pyruvate during glycolysis…the mitochondria knew it was almost time to take action. But it could not do this without the citric acid cycle. And electron transport chain. Thus the pyruvate asked the mitochondria: “are you the powerhouse of the cell because you’re the mitochondria?…Or are you the Mitochondria because you’re the powerhouse of the cell?” Before the mitochondria used domain expansion: cellular respiration, snd the cursed techniques: NADH and FADH, the cell questioned the mitochondria. Can you still make usable ATP? The mitochondria replied: “if I couldn’t find glucose, I might have a little trouble” “but would you lose?” “Nah, I’d win.”

As a bio student I have to say this goes even harder if you know the lore Long explanation: We're pretty sure mitochondria used to be a separate lifeform before developing a symbiotic relationship with plant and animal cells, and eventually fused with the host organisms over 1.45 billion years ago. Our evidence is that it has its own unique genome, different from the one in our chromosomes but similar to that of certain bacteria But the reason mitochondria are so important to the host cells is that they're necessary for aerobic respiration. Breaking down sugar molecules releases a burst of energy, and that energy is needed to make ATP, which is then used as fuel. Normally, a lot of the energy from breaking down the sugar molecules is lost to entropy, but through a complicated series of chemical reactions the mitochondria are able to turn that burst into a slow burn This slow burn is much more efficient, and it allows plant and animal cells to produce 14 times more net ATP than cells that only do anaerobic respiration Short explanation: Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell Edit: I think I made a mistake by saying aerobic respiration is technically a combustion reaction. It's way more than just one reaction and the oxygen that goes into it is used differently than if it were a combustion reaction. I'm a little rusty because I've been getting the humanities classes out of the way (which are fascinating in their own right)
