I have a question. I can see this will hide a groove at the top of the box for a lid. If you want to put a bottom on your box with a groove I guess you would have to do a miter on the bottom as well?

Nope, you can always put stopped grooves in.

Indeed it is. No need for expensive marking knives. Cheap scalpels or craft knives, angled to negate the bevel, are perfect.
