We were taught it’s because of the Pope. The Japanese were afraid that Christian’s would worship the pope more than the emperor. But the Dutch were Christians that didn’t support the pope so the Japanese were okay with them.

dutch tried to Christianize them too but the reformed version of it, Calvinism, but rejected, the relationship between the dutch and Japan is chaotic actually i know what happened in WW2, the Jewish, the rape, and so on. you guys deserve it for your fanaticism of Asia.
@whanua98
@whanua98 Жыл бұрын
@@Jose.AFT.Saddul Japan is isolated they don't know about the pope, Europe, and so on, and they don't even know how to read and write the alphabet, it is simply that they experienced Catholicism is bad, so no Christians, they like the Dutch because they are pretty and what they experience is nice with no exploitation, that is why japan like german culture later on and developed Prussian aesthetic in their clothing.

Potato was introduced to Europe at roughly the same time. The Dutch came to Asia to -colonize- trade. They also introduced their culture there and that include the foods. In Indonesia, potato is well known as ''kentang''. In Japan, it was called ''jaga imo'' back then, which means ''jaga 'bulbs''. Jaga maybe came from Jayakarta, nowadays the port city is well known as Jakarta. So, in a nutshell, before the birth of internet, the world was connected by the potatoes.

Fun fact about the Dodos: many people believe the Dutch hunted them to extinction because they liked they way they tasted. This is entirely false, the Dutch just needed food to survive and the only edible thing they could find were those Dodo Birds, hence the Dutch name ''Walgvogel'' which quite literally translates to ''Disgusting Bird''. Loving the videos Mitsy :D keep up the good work

The wages that were eventually paid to VOC sailors weren't that bad. It's just that a Dutch sailor had to survive a few years untill he got back to Holland to get paid. Since most couldn't handle large sums of money, they usually drank and gambled it all away in weeks. Summary: half or more of the sailors never returned. Those that did return, squandered their money away.

@@jemoedermeteensnor88 I bet there were also quite a few who just deserted and stayed in one of the ports because ship life, according to one English author, was much worse than being in prison. Inmates generally had more space, better food and better company, even in those times.

@@AudieHolland In a standard trip 1 in 8 died. And the crew has to stay atleast 16 hours a day packed under the deck in a place where the height was between 1.5 and 2 meters in the dark. So the commical scrubbing the deck wasnt a punishment but more a relief. The crew also mainly consisted of germans who heared of the wealth and the poorest of the poor. SInce normal sailors sticked to european trade because they knew how bad it was

One point that needs to be made; there were many different Companies. The most dominant one being the Verenigde Oost Inidsche Companie (VoC) and the West Indische Company (WiC). It was the WiC that dealt in the slave trade to America, not the VoC.

I also dislike that he said “it was a good time for white people”, lets not forget people from Africa were sold by their own. Some African tribes became wealthy and more powerfull than ever by capturing and selling their own people to the Europeans.
