Fun fact: During his march to the sea, General Sherman spared the city of Savannah Georgia and "gave it" to Lincoln as a christmas present. It was the only major city he spared during his actions in the South. Savannah is known as "The Hostess city of the South" because of it's reputation for southern hospitality and lavish parties. Allegedly what happened was when General Sherman arrived, the city officials and wealthy went out and welcomed the General and his army and invited them to come into the city and enjoy the hospitality. They threw the General staff huge banquets and parties, helped them stock up on supplies and basicly acted as good hosts, General Sherman was so charmed by the reception and despite being a major port city, strangely the general decided that it wasn't militarily significant, so it wasn't worth the trouble of burning the city and just accepted their capitulation and moved on. However he wasn't so charmed by the rest of Georgia and famously burned the capitol, Atlanta, to the ground. So basically the city partied it's self to safety from the wrath of the Union Army.
@morganv789518 күн бұрын
Interesting story indeed, but the capital of Georgia at the time of the Civil War was actually a city called Milledgeville. Atlanta was the largest city of Georgia and a rail hub at the time

Citizens of a state that forms a greater union. It’s only recently, relatively speaking, in history that people have begun to think of themselves as United States Citizens, or Americans, first. Thats why the Declaration of Independence includes “*These* United States” Groups of people from different separately governed areas agreeing to unite under one flag. Remember the Civil War was about State rights regarding OWNING SLAVES. This was big with rich Southerners (who could have easily owned 10+ slaves, ) but very minor with poor Southerners (who owned up to a max of 1-2 slaves). These wealthy individuals also paid fees to avoid partaking in the war, which was done by paying poorer individuals to take their place in the war effort. But going back to the main focal point, this war was absolutely clear about just wanting to own Slaves which is stated in text via the Constitution of the Confederate States, and the States' Constitution
@randomarcgunner454318 күн бұрын
If anyone wants proof that the civil war was about racism: “Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea [from the United States government]. Its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests upon the great truth that the Negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition.” - Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy
@yoannbelleville776318 күн бұрын
Actually, the poor southeners were just as suportive of the institution of slavery. Aside from the obvious racial superiority complex and the cultural identity aspect of it all (both of wich were big factors), many in the south feared that emancipation would lead to the repeat of the white genocide that followed the Haithian revolution 58 years prior to the civil war. Many ordinary soldiers have made their distaste to the idea of racial equality clear in their letters and journals, most of which are still accessible today.

Its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests upon the great truth that the Negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition.” The confederacy was founded upon slavery, it was an inherently racist state which deserves to be destroyed. DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT SUPPORT THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE QUOTE (putting disclaimer in since youtube gave my account a strike because apparently racism is when you expose how the CSA was inherently evil)
@215Fenix18 күн бұрын
It's pretty funny the people's understanding about the US Civil War is just a bell curve. As a kid, you're told and come to understand that the war was over slavery. As an adolescent, the topic gets more in depth in High school, and you learn about the reasons why the South seceded and how the elected their own official. Lincoln, as some like to point out, became a tyrant because he did do things like interfering with the newspapers and blocking protection like Habeus Corpus during the Civil war. As an adult in college or as an interest, you go back to shortcutting it over slavery because that was a major reason for secession and how Lincoln's game plan was to do away with from the beginning, just failed to play to long game where it was phased out as opposed to upsetting half of his country representatives and fighting a war over. Still funnier the South re-enacts this event to this day, like it's a 1000-year penance.

One eye opening event for me was reading up on the Civil War through the many letters and Memoirs by Union soldiers. You'll often find them being deeply racist and often dismissive of chattel slaveries true brutality. As they journey into the south this changes drastically. These boys from Michigan, Kentucky, or Illinois see slavery for the first time in it's most depraved fashions. There is a reason many of the Union Army speaking of their actions in such a righteous act. The south was a barbaric state that was fighting for the ability to keep other people as nothing but cattle to be bought and sold.

There were a lot of simple yet crucial details that would've given the video a little bit more umph. Like Lincoln constantly swapping Generals or Grant's record of nicknames. Or even Davis' hilarious attempt of escape. It all really felt too simple for what it could. Other than that, It was still an awesome video to watch. The animation was amazing as usual, and it covered the Civil War in decent detail for young upstarts to be -consumed by the endless amount of historical data- interested in either their local or world history. I agree, I was going to edit my comment saying this but man... The animation is moving steady but everything else is falling short even compared to some of their earliest videos. I mean how do you mess up or at least forget the most minor details of the ABRAHAM assassination. Like I mentioned the weapon used is very easy to find out, it's one of the most iconic events in US history and wider even, but instead they just put in a revolver? It takes 1 minute for a 12yr to google the event and fix that mistake. And that's just one little tid bit, they left out so many other important or interesting facts about the entire war and instead shoved in some half baked jokes. It only takes a single day of research to know more than what the video is telling you. I think Mitsi is becoming sloppy as they grow. Either it might be an ego thing like "to big to fail" or "they'll always love our videos". I guess in summary this feels like a very low effort simplification. They started focusing so much on the graphics and animations that they forgot the core reason that makes the videos so entertaining, the actual history/simplification.

Reading the letters and memoirs of Union soldiers during the Civil War revealed a complex picture of racism and prejudice. While some soldiers displayed dismissive attitudes toward slavery, their firsthand accounts of the South's brutality as they encountered it firsthand were starkly different. The shocking realities of chattel slavery, experienced by these men from the North, changed their perspectives dramatically. This newfound understanding, coupled with the South's defense of the institution, fueled the righteous indignation expressed by many Union soldiers in their accounts.

The right for states to enforce and decide slavery for themselves, slavery was practically the only thing keeping those states economically together and because you don't want the federal government taking control of everything (which it slowly over the years has been) it only made sense to fight back and try to protect said right even if said right is completely wrong.

@@ExtantPerson The politicians we're fighting to keep slavery, the majority of Confederate soldiers and southerners didn't own or support slavery, it was the 20 to 30% that was making the money and fighting specifically for slavery.
@karanaher503017 күн бұрын
@@AmericanValorian1. The reason only a small portion of the population owned slaves is cause roughly 50% of the population were slaves (and thus couldn't own slaves) and cause women weren't allowed to legally own property. A better metirc is thus to see how many non slave families owned slaves, in which case roughly 60% of the non slaves owned slaves. 2. While many did not own slaves, over 80% of non slave owners (excluding the slaves) used slave labour either by renting or borrowing from slave owners.
@derps869017 күн бұрын
@@AmericanValorian "the majority of Confederate soldiers and southerners didn't own or support slavery" yes, the majority of confederate soldiers absolutely supported slavery. we have tens upon tens of thousands of personal diaries/memoirs from confederate soldiers, including the "poor farmers," who state explicitly that while yes, they are fighting for their homes, that they're also fighting for slavery. confederate generals would often cite the defense of white supremacy and slavery as a rallying cry for their men before battle, including some of the generals who would go on to be "woke," like james longstreet. the idea of it being a war to preserve and expand slavery wasn't lost on these men, and they were eager to die for it. the southern population was just as complacent in their love for slavery. they weren't dumb... they realized that without slavery, their economy would collapse, and the idea of slaves being freed and integrated into southern society was just too much for them to bear. as for the confederate high command and the majority of the generals, they *were* slaveowners who vehemently supported its expansion.

Great and funny video as always! My great great grandfather fought for the CSA in the 1st Virginian Cavalry. Was conscripted in 1861 and deserted in 1865 after Gettysburg. He was poor white trash and lost what little he had after the war, he moved North in 1880 to New Bedford Massachusetts and found work as a Whaler. He brought with him, his musket, belt buckle and a stack of CS bills, coins and warbonds, that I still have till this day. After the war my family has fought in WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. I am loyal to and adore this great land, but I'm still proud to have Rebel blood. Just thought this would be an interesting share!, to those who enjoy history :)

Fun fact, Robert E Lee was actually against slavery bc it went against his Christian views, and saw it as a horrific stain on America. He fought for the south solely bc he didn’t want to fight his own home state, and not bc of slavery. That’s why in many battles his officers would yell “for Virginia!” Rather than “for the south!” Like other states. He didn’t see it as fighting for the south, only fighting for Virginia
@Willie500017 күн бұрын

Abraham Lincoln was actually somewhat quiet about slavery while taking office and before the start of the war, but southern secessionists knew he was an abolitionist beforehand from speeches and debates, so there was no hiding it, pushing their secession. Also, a lot of Christians justified slavery, with the famous argument that Cain from "Cain and Abel" was black, which is why they thought black people deserved to he punished. I don't know the ratio of Abolitionist to Secessionist Christian, but most all of America -- North AND South -- was devoutly Christian.

The Anti-Slavery movement in Europe was primarily Christian in origin and nature. Hell, for the mainland UK slavery was defacto abolished (under Common Law) by William the Conqueror which led to the court ruling in 1798(ish). Making slavery in the British Mainland illegal by both common and court law. 1803 first Anti-Slavery law was passed in the Uk, and also empowered the Royal Navy to attack slave ships (they only used 2 ships cause they were busy Fighting France then also the US as a sideshow). Post Waterloo, the navy used it's full force to attack slavers and even blockaded Brazil for decades
@allenrogers697918 күн бұрын
Well, a lot of Christians back then were just racist a******* So, of course, they'd find some b******* way to make the religion said that slavery is good.

Nitpick: Emancipation was far from being Lincoln's top priority. His main goal was to avoid secession, and if that meant keeping slavery, he had given signals that he was willing to compromise. You could argue that was playing the long game (new states joining the Union were usually free states, so slave states were becoming a minority and slavery would eventually be outlawed. But at the moment of his election, he made clear that he was not going to push for abolition.
