For me, this song is about being an artist. We tend to dive deeper into ourselves than most people, trying to find moments in the past or deep dark feelings long forgotten for our poetry or other artworks, never letting ourselves forget, trying to turn pain beautiful. But maybe, just maybe, we can also find that beauty in softness and joy.

i could never put into words how much i love mitski.

for me, this song is related to "a pearl"! the pearl diver is trying to get the "pearl" which represents the happiness of the mc of a pearl, and the monsters are the traumas or bad thoughts. Pearl diver tried to get their happiness but is very hard because it's very deep. The pearl diver is beautiful and it has a "nice life" but they risk their beauty for a pearl. In a pearl we hear "sorry i dont want your touch" "sorry i can't take your touch", this suggests how the pearl diver isnt capable of saving a pearl because at the end, pearl diver is a human without superpowers or anything so a pearl tells them to leave because they already know thats not going to be possible, in the chorus we hear "dive dive deaper" I interpretate this as pearl diver being insistent and not hearing a pearl warnings, this, in someway gives a pearl hope of being saved. But pearl diver gets stucked with the negativity and traumas of a pearl, so at the end we hear the "you are dead, the light of the world is fading" maybe showing that now both of them are deep down and no one is going to save them english is not my first language and im not good at music analysis so this can be a bad interpretation 😭 idk
