The lyrics hit me and it's so beautiful as a complete body of work. Although some of the songs started off very simple (with the instrumentals at first listen), the production elements and lyrics eventually immersed me into the song. Therefore, going back and listening made me enjoy this album more! Overall, a lovely project from one of my now favorite artists! TELL ME YOUR FAVESS

"I'm Your Man" hit me the hardest. There's so much darkness in that track that leaves me practically spellbound. So glad Mitski didn't quit music and instead ended up coming back with one of her best albums.

The Deal is my favorite story on the album. I love how it's structured as a conversation, between the narrator and the deal, and then between the narrator and the bird that's her soul that she gave away. Something about that is just really interesting to me, I don't know why. I'm Your Man is my favorite musical production, it really feels like a big screen Western movie at the end. I love the way the songs on the album build from small and mundane to exciting and grand at the end, and I love the way the stories are complex and reward multiple listens.

That's was I was about to say, the bird is her soul '' now I'm taken, the night has me, you won't hear me singing, you're a cage without me, your pain is eased but you'll never be free, for now I'm taken, the night has me''

it definitely took me a couple listens to truly get into this album, but it has grown on me SO much. i’m glad i don’t have to make “first listen” reactions because i would have been like “oh hmm. okay that’s interesting. not my favorite.” and now i could write essays about every lyric and production choice on each song haha.

I think this is one of her biggest projects, it's soft, but it's haunting, think that the end sets the scene so well, she is the land inhospitable, and at the end of it, there's still hope for this land. ❤ (Sorry for my English, I'm from Brazil haha)

This album is so profound to me. It hit me in so many ways. The lyrics, the production, the detail, everything is just SO perfect it feels like it was made for me. The nostalgia of Americana country sounds with Mitski’s heartbreaking lyrics and the story she’s telling from beginning to end. She starts the album drinking alcohol bc it’s what makes her feel like family would and then coming to conclusions about how she acts in this relationship and what it does to the other person and eventually learning about herself. By the end of the album she’s drinking water as a form of self care, no longer depending on alcohol. So much of this story is so relatable and the sound is so nostalgic and her vocals are so beautiful. It struck such a chord in me. AND I live in the plains she’s singing about 😭. It has become my favorite album by Mitski which I never thought was possible to outdo Retired From Sad for me. Absolutely love this project so so much

„I Don’t Like My Mind” really resonates with me because i tend to overwork myself and stay always busy so I don’t have time for my thoughts that lead to other thoughts and so on. And the cake is such a great metaphor. It represents her intrusive thoughts and past mistakes manifesting themselves in her mind. When i heard the lyrics “A whole cake, all for me.” it reminded me of the saying that something is “a piece of cake”. She could be pointing to that saying it’s not only one thought, it’s a whole collection of them. What struck me the most is the last lyric “A whole cake, so please don’t take, take this job from me”. Listening to this you would expect the repetition of whole “don’t take” to imply how her work is the toxic coping mechanism she must hold onto. But instead it changes things for me and it’s as if she begged to have her job taken from her because she knows it only ruins her even more and doesn’t get her anywhere.

I take the deal as her making a deal with the devil to take her soul, she cant bear it anymore and just wants it gone so she doesn’t have to feel. She thinks it doesn’t work and walks away. She notices a bird and thinks nothing of it till she realizes the bird is her soul which is free with out her and now shes just an empty vessel, or “a cage.”

i ADORE my love mine all mine and heaven. some of the most straightforward love songs mitski’s ever written (from someone who has listened to her whole discography, i really can’t think of anything she’s written that’s so straightforward about just being in love). her writing is still as gorgeous and poetic as ever but those ones are easier to digest than most mitski songs. just sweet, beautiful, love songs that resonate with me so deeply

I think Buffalo replaced is somewhat using the outside/inside to compare her own relationship with her inner thoughts ans her own mind. like she sits outside rather than sit inside with her thoughts and feelings. And the mosquitoes sucking her blood could be how the world takes from her, but the soaking in the moonlight could be what she takes from the world!

Love you’re reactions! I was also so moved by star I can’t stop listening to it. What I loved about the star metaphor is that the stars are shining on us from the past and - as there’s recurring themes of this being a healing relationship that taught her to love - it’s like the after effects of that healing that she carries with her is the starlight from this lost love still shining on her.

This is without a doubt Mitski's best album - it's so raw - each song finds a way for the listener to relate to the album; the lyrics are so uncomfortably honest. As much as I love Mitski, on first listen, I didn't enjoy this album as much I thought I would've, but upon reflection I think a lot of the criticism I formed was because I wasn't ready to relate to what was being said. The moments I think that hurt the most are empowered by the orchestral pieces behind the lyrics - for example, 'I Don't Like My Mind', the lyrics pulled me in, but the lyrics coupled with the instrumental? Nail in the coffin. This album is her magnum opus; thank you for sharing your reaction to this.

The first impression I had listening to the album for the first time was that it's going to be an album that really hits when I'm much older, years from now (when I look a lot like the older woman in the Bug Like An Angel video). A lot of the songs give me a sense of being the last man on earth, especially one of my favorite tracks The Frost. I love, and also find it so painful, that the album makes me picture my future as the youngest person in my family, when I'm the last one left here.

Great video! I read your pinned comment and I totally agree that I enjoy this record more than her last one. Laurel Hell had great lyrics , but many of the songs weren't my style when it comes to how they sounds. This album is very comfortable to listen to. The songs are heartwarming and the vocals are so good! I loved the whole album but I'd say my favorite song is 'The Frost'. That last line about losing your best friend and not being able to tell them how you lost them blew my mind! I also loved the instrumental for 'When Memories Snow', I really like how Mitski sometimes lets the instruments shine a lot in her songs and become the spotlight (as in 'Why didn't you stop me?', for instance). Once again, I love to hear your thoughts on songs; you always bring some really interesting views to the table!

My favorite song on this was definitely The Deal. On the second listen when I payed proper attention to the lyrics it broke me. I may be wrong but I got from some parts of this album that it could be making reference to the Major Acarna tarot cards throughout the lyrics and themes, for example 'My Love Mine All Mine' refers to the moon, and most explicitly also talks about her love, like the lovers card. Many themes of death are present too. There's also the final song which the line 'king of all the land' could refer to the emperor (and empress simultaneously) card? Might be a stretch and I could just be trying to search for an alternate meaning for all the religious connotations. But to me, The Deal is clearly talking about the Devil, and she takes a deal with him to be rid of her very own soul. The aspect of this that brings me to tears is simply the concept of how she requests it, giving it just to give? Taking it for the consequences? To Mitski, the reward is the punishment. Her soul hurts her so greatly, that she'd rather feel nothing for the rest of her days than bear it any longer. And that anthropromorphism techinque you talked about was hauntingly beautiful, the idea of the bird being her soul and speaking to her, telling her how it belongs to the night now, and that she is a cage without it, just an object, and with no purpose anymore either. The decision to make her soul a bird is perfect too, as we aren't told what type of bird it is, and so the listeners are left to decide for themselves if it could be a dove for example, to signify purity and grace, or a raven/crow to signify death, etc. The music of her soul will never be heard again, whether it was a pleasant sound or not.

Just a few tips (im a total stranger so feel free to ignore) 1- when say POET REACTS we want to see your point of view. Seeing the meaning on genius is something everybody can do, we want YOUR opinion. 2- I see you tend to cover only pop artists that arent that deep on lyrics, so mitski seems a bit out of place here. But I see how you like the memories snow and the sound, so I recommend Bjork, which have a huge influence on mitski work. Its pop and the lyrics are REALLY deep. So take this as a challenge :) I recommend start with hyperballad or bacherolette

This album was truly amazing, one thing i wish that had gotten picked up sooner though is the symbolism of the bird in the deal. I hadn't gotten it right away either but later finding out the bird itself is her soul leaving her body and chastising her for leaving behind her humanity was something that made it a top 3 for me!
