I’ve had an L400 3L petrol Delica for 10 years. Did an LPG dual fuel conversion not long after I bought it, which paid for itself quite quickly. I’ve driven about 135,000km around the east side of Australia. Had so many awesome adventures in it. Best thing is that it will go most reasonable places off road. Worst thing is that the engine is buried under the dash, so for a simple spark plug replacement or for a timing belt you’re up for 6 hours of labor cost. Also recently my transmission started to die so that was about $5k in overhaul. Other than that though, my Delica is my baby. I’ve done too many mods to count and in my opinion looks like the most bad a$$ van in Australia. It has been a labor of love over the years but I have no regrets! ❣️🚐💨

I Like the Delica! A Lot! It's got a lot of character not like every other sprinter out there, and 4x4. Cool little overlander for sure! And for the price of purchase compared to a new more efficient desiel vehicle its gotta be a contender. At least for us Americans. I'm working on a 1994 4×4 desiel Suburban right now for some US adventuring, and have thought about getting into a 4x4 astro van. But if the Delica was available in the US I'd be hunting one down for sure! Hard to beat van vs suv comfort with 4x4 and a desiel engine.

I have a Pajero exceed 03 3.8L V6 Auto with 258000 and all I've ever replaced was the fuel pump(put a bigger one in) , all CV joints multiple times 🤣 the life of offroading, a timing belt, fan belt and I'm about to replace the spark plugs for the 2nd time. Sad they are discontinuing the Pajero tho because it's honestly the best 4x4 there is. I have max lift possible I can't remember if they did a body lift but I don't think you can on a Pajero(I could be wrong I paid for the suspension and didn't install it myself, took it to a shop early on) but the centre locking diff imo with traction control and stability control is the best there is, the amount of clearance you get underneath is more than someone with a nine inch full lift but there diff is still hanging out the back. The lowest point under my car is my tow ball. And with the ATC,ASC,4LLC the car will walk up anything without a slip, I go 4x4 with some Hilux and patrols and they are just gunning it to get up the hills wheels spinning and moving from side to side, and I just cruise up at like 10kmph like my tires are made of glue. I guess there's a reason they won Dakar 12times, got a Guinness World record and to this day no one has beaten that streak. If you want to be bored will 4x4 ing buy Pajero 😂

nice video and nice car setup ! I understand your choice and future wishes (to have some more space), but know that an overland vehicle is always too big to drive and mostly to small to live in once you stopped in a place with not so good weather. An overland vehicle is always a not so easy compromise. After 35 years of LandRover I now decided to build a Sprinter, the smallest version with Oberaigner heavy duty permanent 4x4 and diff locks. For me (I'm not tall) it's just OK, I can just stand up in it and sleep large wise in a fixed bed. Feel free to take a look at my videos. See you on the road !

Hi Gav, it's a Super Select stick like the Pajero/Montero/L200. You can move from 2WD to 4WD at up to 60 mph. To engage centre diff lock or low range it needs to be stopped. LSD is option, but we have it in the read. And we've installed after market front diff lock. Regards!

Not sure why your delica is using so much diesel. Probably the weight and tires? Our 1994 2.8 got us about 600 km with 55L on our aussie trip. We were only getting about 450 to 500km though when we first bought the car though because the wheels weren't aligned and we destroyed both our front tires!

Had the L300 4wd and L400 4wd before Toyota for reliability. I have a lifted 1998 3.0 Turbo manual 4wd LWB Hiace with 31's on wide rims now with 380,00km. Also had the 2.8 and 2.4 4wd Hiaces which are slow loaded up. Current Hiace has better handling and a slightly wider body and wheel track, nicer interior plastics and general quality, easier to work on too. Better fuel economy by a small margin, but not quite as capable off road due to no diff locks. Always felt like the L400 would tip over so you have to drive them slow, the Hiace is like a Subaru WRX in comparison, I can 4 wheel drift it on gravel roads and it does good power slides on soft sand and mud. 4m40 engines are notorious for head failure, amazed yours is still going strong, and that was how mine died at 272kms. L400 is half the Hiace's cost here in NZ. Nice video tho, teamwork!

Just for you to know: a brand new Hilux loaded, with 32" tires and a roof tent won't give you more than 20 mpg. Totally stock maybe 25 or 27, but once you put a small lift and 32" tires the fuel goes down fast. I own a new L200, I'm happy with it but if you are happy with the Delica don't replace it just for fuel eficiency

It is hard for a Vehicle to be everything at once, the little Deli does pretty good at wearing so many hats. But, if you had a Merc Sprinter, you would have done a fuel pump or worse by now, costing you a fortune. Im surprised at the 13L/100k's, my 13 year old 2.5 tonne 4.2L Landcruiser gets 10.5L/100ks I think you have much to be happy about, a CRD has many potential problems

But it doesn't mean we are unhappy at all... we love our Vanda ! :) But one thing is a fact... we know the negatives of our van as we've had it for many years... but maybe the Sprinter or Iveco Daily have many more that we just don't know about I guess... Problem with modern diesels is they don't like poor fuel quality, which you are going to find on your travels. Owner of a new Prada here in NZ stuffed his engine because he got a little bit of water in the fuel. I think it was a $NZ24k repair bill.

You think you're economy is bad. I have the v6 and it's a shocker. I had to buy a new xv Subaru as my daily driver and only use the deli when travelling or camping etc.

4x4 Adventure I love my l300, great turning circle, relaxing to drive, practical, feels like an old vw camper except you know it won’t break down
