Some of the clearest mechanical videos i have ever seen, glad i still got my GTO.. (sort 0f)

Greatest how to video series I’ve seen in a long time! Thorough, clear and professional! Way less confusing than the factory manuals. I’ve got a repair shop and customer had a water pump and water crossover pipe leaking. We don’t see their old mitsu’s around much anymore, and this video made tackling the job much smoother and less stressful. A big thank you to Joe from this rust belt mechanic over here in upstate New York!

I just bought a 1991 dodge stealth RT with 57000 original miles. The car has had very little done to it other than basic maintenance like oil, brakes, air filter, ect. I plane to do a timing belt, water pump, and spark plugs this spring once in warms up a little (I live in Michigan). This is the most helpful car tutorial I've seen, very specific and step by step. Thank you for making me feel confident in this job.

I was able to learn a lot and see the massive work it takes for the job. I recently had my mechanic change mine with the entire kit, 120 mile service, I would never been able to do it on my own.. It is great to see the process so now I know much more about the workings of the car. I suppose if I was a mechanic I would have to drop engine, but I'm a nobody when it come to this. Great video, I'll head to forum to see the rest.

Great video! Just so everyone know you need to do the timing belt service every 60,000 miles OR 5 years regardless of the mileage. The belt starts to dry rot after that and may begin to develop small cracks.

ohhhh shittt i own it for 10yrs at 90,000km (60,000km they wound back) its 30,000km later at 120,000km and its getting the waterpump and timing belt done

Hi Joe. Terry from Minnesota (USA). Great work on making a complex job look fairly easy. I just watched part one, I thought you did great explaining the steps and pointing out where everything is located - but I have a few questions. Do you know the mileage on the belt in the video? You showed how loose it was and I was just curious. The engine support tool doesn’t look home made but I believe I can weld one up easily enough if I knew some of the dimensions for it. How long is the center hook piece? Where on the car do the tools feet sit? How tall is the tool from its feet to the bar to have enough clearance? If you could tell me those I can rig one up on my own car. Where did you get the tensioner pin? Or, what is its diameter? A drill bit shank would work the same way if it is the correct size. Any advantage to removing the fender for this? Do you have a recommendation for a cam shaft lock tool? There are dozens of them available in different styles. No rush on answering any of these questions. I’m planning on making this next summer’s project since I have a car lift in my shop and the tools to pull it off. Thanks for another fantastic video, on to part two!

Thank you so much for the clear video I was able to do step-by-step very easily never done a timing belt before. But I do have an issue the front cams lined up perfectly the ones that are closest to the bumper but when I checked the rear cams they were off by two or three teeth how do I correct those do I just turn them and then put the belt on or is there a specific way that needs to be done? When I bought the car someone Had Tried to do the timing but didn’t do it correctly and clearly that was the problem with this car since they weren’t lined up any advice would be gratefully appreciated on those rear cams

Great detailed video!! Getting ready for part 2 & 3. I got 2 questions: 1. Why would you only lock the cam gears on the front DOHC head and not on the back DOHC cam gears? 2. Would you remove the engine to replace the main crank seal? (behind the pulley) Appreciate your response. Cheers

The rear cam is not under tension and sits where you put them. I don't recall having to remove the block to replace the seal but don't hold me to that.

Ty for the videos ! One question, instead of pulling up on the crankshaft wrench to get off the bolt, would it have be easier to try an loosen the bolt by moving the wrench to the other side and pushing down on it, that way you can use your weight with the downward force of getting off the bolt ?
@Fmiguelify4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much very detail video i learned a lot
@1magnit4 жыл бұрын
The headgasket leaks first, that over pressurises the cooling system, that makes the seal on the water pump fail so it leaks but it leaks through the bearing. When you keep topping up the cooling system with water you'll get rust, the water pump bearing will rust making it seize, the timing belt will then destroy it's self and the valves will bend.

Hello joe this Damian Retana from Dallas Tx I’ve found that on the power steering pump tensioner there is a square cut out for your 1/2” drive to take the tension of the belt with out removing the tensioner. See if this Helps . Good luck.
@3000GTGTORestoration4 жыл бұрын
Hi Damian Not sure which video you're watching buddy but the tensioner has to be removed in order to remove the cam belt covers and I do use the 1/2" drive bar when re-fitting the pump belt. Or did I misunderstand what you are saying?

Jut used this method of removing the pullley off a vehicle that had been driven on a beach. Pulley was pretty seized on and I just gently hit it several times as prescribed and it really works. This is my go-to for anything GTO. BTW I reckon there's a special place in hell for those who treat a vehicle as this one I have has been treated.

I wonder if, even though it is more stuff to undo and be systematic about, if it is easier to drop the engine down on the complete front subframe to do the job? I wonder if the extra hours taken to do that would offset the pain of trying to remove items in such a limited amount of space? Just a thought if you did a comparison one day!

The stock gauge is very unreliable and will show far more boost than actually exists. Start by getting an aftermarket gauge and seeing what the actual boost is.

@1magnit4 жыл бұрын
Pulling the radiator out doesn't take long then you can get rid of the alternator. Never never never work on a car with the battery still connected. That means that the first job is to undo the bolt for the crank pulley by using a breaker bar on it and crank it with the starter motor to get it loose. After that disconnect the battery.
@3000GTGTORestoration4 жыл бұрын
You are right about disconnecting the battery but trying to turn over an engine with a breaker bar connected sounds like a dangerous game to me and isn't shown in the manual.
@1magnit4 жыл бұрын
@@3000GTGTORestoration That's how you do it (breaker bar to the chassis and crank it with starter) when you don't have the special tool for holding the pulley. Putting it back together I always use a rattle gun with max pressure in the air tank, that will torque it up to 120 or more ft lbs. It's not in the manual because you use the mitsubishi tool instead
@1magnit4 жыл бұрын
@@3000GTGTORestoration Another way to do it is to put it into 5th gear, one person stands on the brake pedal while another undoes the bolt. It won't work with an auto though, only manual

Very sorry but I can't do fault finding videos on cars that I can't see. I can give you a very long list of possible causes but it may not be any of them and you will just waist time and money. I would suggest that you get a free copy of the manual online and a test meter and then systematically go through the system.

@3000GTGTORestoration3 жыл бұрын
There will be some slack points, depending on where the engine stops. Rotate the engine manually until you reach the timing marks and then see if there is any slack. If you still have slack, the tensioner is probably faulty.
