As a mechanic who worked at a Mitsubishi dealership for 7 years doing rear spark plugs or a timing belt on these aren’t as scary as some think IF you know the right “hacks”. Also when doing the timing belt, best to replace cam seals, water pump and crank seal all at the same time. Saves you having to come back later and tear it all apart again.

It amazed alot of motoring journalist's how fast the car was, they pointed at the car's official power figures as being way down from what it should be. I thought some review's exaggerated the cars performance a little tbh, Autospeed stated that it thrashed the Subaru WRX STI that they had access to at the time. Plus the Ralliart Magna did it despite being weight disadvantaged by another passenger. But I changed my mind about it when I learned that some Ralliart Magna's had 210kw instead of 180kw, I'm not certain how much torque those car's would have but probably more than 350nm. Mitsubishi probably gave those car's to the reviewer's I think. There was 30 that were Supercharged too.

I'd recommend one modification, look at fitting a modified 380 intake manifold. The intake manifolds were a carry over item from the 3L motor and they just don't have the capacity to breathe. A 380 manifold is about $40 at the wreckers, and a competent alu welder can make the necessary modifications for $200ish (Add a vac port for FPR, and move the TB flange so it bolts up like stock) It'll let the motor breathe better. Apart from that, not too much else you can do to them before spending some coin. Honestly the Ralliart 3.5L with a 380 intake goes so well you wouldn't bother with the whole 3.8L motor.
@skippmclovan1135
@skippmclovan1135 Жыл бұрын
There is a well accomplished performance engine building firm in Perth which can alternatively provide a modified 6G74 inlet manifold with a 150% plenum capacity, using the existing runners - this provides for further top end power WITHOUT loss of low and mid-range torque which is what is 'felt' underfoot - for an unmodified engine the low and mid-range can be significantly improved 'under the foot' by the addition of intake runner tuned length 'ram tubes' in conjunction with the 150% increased plenum capacity. This would be my recommendation, unless you wish to go racing all day at 6,000rpm! Modifications are a compromise in one form or another when you have a computer controlled modern engine design.
@skippmclovan1135
@skippmclovan1135 7 ай бұрын
So the 380 inlet manifold has 'narrower diameter' inlet runners than the 6G74 standard inlet manifold (that is of the same design as the 6G72 manifold). This really surprised me, when an ordered 'ram-tubed' 380 manifold turned-up, and wouldn't bolt-up exactly, orifice to orifice, to the 6G74 lower valley intake (it is a split two piece, bolted together intake manifold system that these engines use). In other words the 380 manifold was dumping air down into a LARGER set of lower pipes. And this lower exit section of the 380 tubes was well below the lower edges of the inserted ram tubes. I was told by a speedway race engineer that this would tend to stop reversion. It would also mean low and mid-range torque would be increased over the larger diameter standard 6G74 upper inlet runners. Top end power however would probably be restricted by the 380's smaller diameter runners one would assume. So, in the the case of the 380 manifold over the 6G74 one, 'bigger' turns out in reality to be 'smaller', and quite noticeably so too. That surprised the heck out of me. If you want to run your engine regularly at 6,000 rpms it is going to pull down air more easily through the bog standard inlet manifold, which turns out to be significantly bigger internally than the 380's intake manifold runners.

Epic score mate. I owned a 2002 Magna VR-X for 6.5 years till it was rear ended and written off. Was one of the best cars I've ever owned. Never had any issues and was super clean when I bought it. (These and the VR-X along with the Magna Sport were Australia's fastest 6 cyl cars, till the XR-6 turbo came along ) Fit and finish of these cars is testament on how Mitsubishi Australia built these so well and were a very underrated car for it's time and the only people that said they were crap were people that never drove or owned one. For "only" 180kw these Ralliarts were very quick in the day and still are. They're a big car that can hustle. Exceptional ones still pull big money for a 20+ year old car. Got a really big soft spot for the TJ Magnas. I'd own one again in a heartbeat.

The pistons were sent to Germany to be shot peened, to get them anodised the piston crown and top compression ring fitted too. 10% higher cam lift over stock, with ungraded valve springs. The heads were ported for better breathing. Even the regular 6G74 motors are great power plants, they’re very smooth and torquey. The Ralliart motor is a masterpiece. 180kw is a strong figure for a 20 year old NA 3.5. Same as Holdens supercharged 3.8 XU6 at the time. Ralliart 6G74 were 9.4:1 compression ratio. The stock 6G74 was supposedly 9.0:1, however my TL cc'd out at only 8.5:1. I managed to bring that up to exactly 9.7:1 by decking the block and head (and piston crown) surfaces to the maximum that was possible. Had wanted 10:1 but that wasn't going to work. I de-shrouded all the valves and profiled the chambers, fitted phenolic heat blocks to the intake and TB, ran the engine cooler with an 82 degree 'fail to safe' hi-flow thermo and a 'thicker' rad, used the Ralliart exhaust system fully ceramic coating in and out, ripped out and blocked-off all EGR junk, opened-up the TB butterfly lip restriction, used Ralliart cams AND vernier wheels to set-up the best amount of advance, picked-up a day race hi-output dizzy, Pulstar plugs, used a super Delphi MAS unit and a suitable flashing chip unit for the ECM. It can use 98 only. There is not one single baffle or restriction ANYWHERE in the whole length of the exhaust system, half in 3" reducing to 2.5" to maintain heat and velocity and exiting through a BIG Bourla . .

I had a wing skirts, exhaust, front splitter on my solara, tuned, suspension wheels etc. Not any different. The ralliart was a cheap say S-Line or M-sport of the day. Just Mitsubishi chucking a wing a badge & a tune on a Magna to lever off their lancer evo's. A bigger Evo however they most definately are not. Could you say pull 200kw+ out of one? Asked around back in the day. Was never a thing. So no, no answer on that. There was no shortage of jdm alternatives out there guys were tuning. Magnas were not one of them. Wow what a score! You’ve done well, I owned a black manual Ralliart Magna back in 2009 just like yours. I’ve also owned 12 Magna’s now, such an awesome car! The manual gearbox really wakes that incredible and indestructible V6 engine up

Still remember vividly the commercials for those, looked like it had potential to be fairly popular and help dig Mitsubishi Australia out of the hole they were known to be in at the time, but even up until now I've not seen many of them on the road. Always had a soft spot for these, keen to see it get a bit of love and more life under her.

I'm excited for this; my first car was a 5MT Mirage of the same vintage, and you aren't kidding about that throttle response. It's now gone to my brother's family as a run-around, but I still adore driving it when I get the chance; even abused, poorly maintained, completely clapped out, it's STILL shockingly crisp and responsive. Mitsubishi just knew how to build an engaging car

Alot of people might hate to admit it. But honestly magna's and especially the rallyart takes you back to a different era. For better or worse. It will be very interesting to see you chip away at this car. And honestly even tho im a die-hard falcon man its a breath of fresh air to see one get love

They are brilliant cars. We had two when I was younger. Mum had an 00 executive and dad had a 99 sports brand new. Both awesome cars. If I had 5-10k today I'd pick up a ralliart magna or and 02 vrx in a heartbeat. Low KMs though cause I'd wanna keep it. The 380 was a great car too Edit. I already posted but watching again lol

The sound the Ralliart Magna is making was pretty impressive though. I wonder if it lumps alot at idle when it warms up, be a key indicator as to whether it has upgraded cam's from the regular ones that boost power to 210kw.

New subscriber earned. I have had 3 magnas and loved every one. My last wagon got a 3.8 swap from the 380 and it's upgraded gearbox, I miss that thing so much. Always searched for an elusive sports wagon but never found one close enough for sale. Looking forward to seeing the end result!

@@MotoringBoxTV man I'd take that thing any day without complaints haha. I don't think you spent too much, I paid $1250 for a ratty set of those stock rims alone years ago. Wagon nerd but I had a manual tj sports sedan from a P plater I picked up for $1500 as my second one (manual wagon was my P plater so full circle) and it had a full sound system rims, rego and exhaust haha, leant it to a mate and it got crashed 😭 if you feel the gearbox is a bit sloppy I don't how rare they are but I can't recommend the 380 one enough it was my fav upgrade and just slots straight in, best part about working on cars with minimal electrics. And so cheap too but it was all before covid tax. I love just how much info is online about magnas though the forum's can tell you everything. Anyway good luck with it all.

Sold these many years ago for a multi franchise dealer. Part of my pay perks was a company car. Which was grabbing something off the used car lot. More often than not I’d grab a Magna we’d traded. Even though I was a Holden man at heart. On a drive day for Mitsubishi one day we all did a hot lap with Ed Ordynski around a local race track in a standard Magna. He did things I never knew were possible in this little sleeper including an awesome Jturn to start the lap. Great times.

When they introduced the then P plate restrictions in 2004, so then it was no v8, turbo, performance 6s as in 911s or m3s and no modifications, the ralliart magnas were one of the hottest cars a p plater could drive at the time. I was lucky as i was exempt from the restrictions so rolling in a heavily modified v8 ute i could chop other p platers. I knew a bloke who wrote off a black ralliart then the red one he bought to replace it. Both manuals no sunroof cars.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! What a surprising new car for the channel. LOVE IT. A few years ago I took a journey with the other fwd sedan, the 2001 Nissan Maxima. I loved the journey so much and it was so reliable through my ownership (140k-200k) that I bought a newer generation 2008 Maxima at 140k to start all over again.

I had a 2000 Magna Sport. I didn't buy it because I wanted it, I bought it because I had a car written off in a hail storm and needed a car. I rang a mate who was mechanic and worked at a general dealership and he told me to come and check it out. I did, drove it and thought that for the price he got me, I had no reason to say no. It turned out to be a great car. Lots of power, smooth gearbox, very quiet and 100% reliable for the 12 years I owned it. They may look a bit boring and daggy, but they were the best of the Aussie built family cars for quality. I'll say that because I am a no brand man. I don't care for the Holden v Ford argument. I just want a good value decent car and ended up getting it.

Magna's aren't too bad to work on once you get into it, along with the really good workshop manual you can find online. For the interior door handle backing pieces, if you can only find grey ones in good shape like I ended up with, the Dupli-color Vinyl and Fabric Paint in gloss black is almost an exact match to those black door handles. I picked up a TJ Sports earlier this year. so far I've overhauled all the suspension, swapped in the black leather interior from a VRX, ralliart wheels, replaced the clutch all without any major trouble; Coming up on the major service at 405,000km, which is going to be a lot cheaper than you'd think.

@brantleyfoster021

The poor paint is a new issue to me. I think the problem is that people don't garage them. Any car left out in the weather everyday, especially somewhere hot like QLD is going to destroy the paint. These car's are 20 year's old now. Magna's are cheap, so they attract the very people that don't look after them, like doing something simple & putting them in the garage each day for example. Have had alot of hail damaged car's locally that I saved my car from, by simply keeping it in the garage.

My parents both had magnas back when I was younger. A '99 sports with the 3.5 brand new off the floor and later in a second hand '00 magna executive. Both awesome cars. Especially the sports. Only issue was an oil leak which was a poor thread on the sump plug and the cv joints went once The executive got something stuck in the air filter and nearly blew the engine but luckily was only a 400 dollar fix

Hey Sean, take it from me as a mechanic for 25 years. Make sure the timing belt is done. They chronically leak oil from the cam seals and rocker cover gaskets.
